Are you saying you can’t talk about baseball without using a bunch of numbers as if they’re the end all of the game? I’m assuming you’re not THAT extreme about stats, I’d just really be shocked if I was the only one in here who doesn’t see the flaws in a statement like “wins are a dumb stat.” There’s flaws with ALL stats, but when you get down to brass tacks, only one really matters. And it’s the one you’re throwing out as being “dumb.”
Does it suck when Cliff Lee gives up one run and still loses? Of course it does. Do you think he really gives a shit about it from a statistical standpoint? Guarantee you all he cares about is the L not being a W, and it really is just that simple.
Recent example, Yanks just lost this weekend. CC gave up 3 runs to the Rays, but we couldn’t get a run off Shields (stats say we rape him for free btw, no lube) yet statiticians would define CC’s outing as a “quality start.” You really think he wants to hear that shit? Or anyone else on the Yankees? Just sayin, I don’t think you could walk up to people who are actually involved in baseball and tell them that wins are a dumb stat. Doubt they’ll want to hear it.
