This trading deadline with the Jays bummed me out, I thought for sure I’d have all these random prospects to get irrationally excited about…instead nothing happens.

RBI and HR aren’t dumb stats, because they actually signify things that happened. Home Runs is the number of home runs hit. RBI is the number of runs batted in. They’re not especially useful for evaluating the value of a player on their own, but if taken for what they are, they’re fine. Wins are a made-up stat with arbitrary guidelines, and nobody would take them even slightly seriously if they were called anything but “wins.” But they’re called wins, so people treat them like they actually mean something–because winning is everything, right guys!!!

I didn’t read much of this thread I just wanted to rant that I’m tired of the news going on and on A-Rod being stuck on HR 599. He’s tested positive for steriods while he was playing. That is an irrefutable fact but everyone just forgets it and treat him like royalty.
But Barry Bonds who was only alleged steriod use until well after he retired, no hard proof existed and he was hounded every day at how he wasn’t worthy of breaking the record.

I did, you’re saying that wins are a dumb stat because a pitcher can’t win if his team doesn’t score runs. My argument is that it’s pointless bitching because at the end of the day, you PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. You rarely hear these pitchers come up and say shit like “I pitched well but we lost because we didn’t score runs” and if you do hear that (Jeff Weaver lol) you can be sure they’re gettin bitchslapped back in the clubhouse. Shut up and go do your job, you play to win the game.
Maybe it’s just because my team hasn’t had 40-50 years of straight losing, dunno who you root for either. But to me it just sounds like crying. You play to win the game. Really we could argue that stats as a whole are dumb, or don’t reflect this accurately or that accurately, but we live in the days of sabermetrics and UZRs and shit. You play to win the game.
