well i think cameron / drew are league average, but if you’re building a team defensively you want great defensive players not just average.
that is why they have marco scutaro on their team.
also they have a pretty good infield but they don’t really have extreme ground ball pitchers.
lester is high at 50%, but beckett/buchholz/lackey are both about 45% and 40% fly ball pitchers [beckett is about 30% FB], wakefield is a fly ball pitcher, papelbon fly ball ptcher
wouldn’t you want to have the best speediest defense in the outfield with all the fly balls? i think the CF at fenway is too big for cameron not that it matters since now he’s out for months and the great bill hall is there
Well once we get Cliff Lee back, and hopefully he in game shape. Anytime we have those two going in the same series we have a real good shot at winning that series. (Unless it’s like a 4 game series…)
I just want this team to make the post season cause that 1-2 punch will be gdlk!
The Sox bullpen just shut down the Texans for 5 innings. Too bad Beckett shit the bed. Lowell continues to make the case that Ortiz shouldn’t be playing.
Theo just stumps me, because, when you look at their two most recent championship teams, maybe half the team was able to play good defense.
And really…when you can record at least an extra base hit by hitting a ball either 302 ft or 310 ft…why would you build your team around defense? It’s not about being able to cover the most ground, which is a heavily misunderstood thing. It’s about not making the boneheaded basic mistakes. Theo could have just as easily built a team of slightly below average defenders that hit far better (even if they didn’t want to keep Bay, they could have gotten Holliday) and probably have a flip of what their record is right now.
Doing a quick lookup, as a team, overall, metrically, the Red Sox were the 2nd worse defensive team in 2004 (ahead of the Yankees), but 7th best in 2007. 07 is attributed to Lowell’s amazing year, I’d venture to guess, or else those defensive numbers probably drop. But 04 supports my point.
I don’t either they have the 2nd highest payroll. If you were to tell me that without showing me their roster I would automatically assume they had a bunch of heavy hitters. In reality they don’t… (WTF).
I assume that you play small ball because you have to not because you want to. I’m still a little perplexed at what Boston is doing. What confuse me even more is Boston is a huge market. Why the hell did they put together a boring ass team to watch? No one want to watch defense except for hardcore fans, but that a minority of fans.
Bill Simmons was talking about how he can’t wait till the Red Sox play Seattle cause we can’t score…
He seems to forget that we can’t hit home runs, but we can hit singles all day long! Every single we turned into a double after we get a steal just watch Boston!!!
When you consider how totally stacked the minors are with talent, between Lars Anderson, Casey Kelly, Junichi Tazawa, Ryan Westmoreland, Josh Reddick and Michael Bowden…I can’t complain. The only genuinely horrible moves he’s made, I think, are with Julio Lugo and the trade for Eric Gagne.
I think the Phillies might have lost to the Marlins?
Or tied them?
Shrug
Yeah the Phillies lost 2 to 1 to the Marlins a couple days ago. The Marlins are going to win the WS this year probably. I thought it was going to be last year, but it’s gotta be this year.
