He’s a serviceable 1B and you could move Youk to 3B.
But I’m not 100% selling on Papi. There are plenty of players that start off the season slowly on a year-in-year-out basis. There’s still a chance he can pull it together, and we are still just…what? 13 games into the season? I think he’s worth taking a shot on.
In all seriousness though, you could look at Texieria as another slow starter, offensively. However he’s doin his thing in the field, Ortiz can’t do that. A DH that doesn’t hit consistently is just eating up a spot in the lineup, and eating up payroll. He had his good years, probably time to cut ties now. Bound to cause some debate amongst the fans though.
I really thought that most fantasy sport player where sports fanatics like me instead their a bunch of emo anti-social nerds? Wow… speechless… I thought those dudes play Magic cards or WOW. What the fuck they doing in our sports!!!
They won’t cut him though, and with his salary he is untradeable. The team has too much loyalty to him for all that hes accomplished in the past for the Sox and Tito is too much of a pussy (read: players manager) to bench him. Although, he finally put Lowell in for him as a pinch hitter.
The Red Sox will most definitely lead the league in stolen bases against. Teams already know they can run at will, Texas just took it to the next level.
The Red Sox have a lot of issues now anyways. Their great prevent defense is preventing them from winning. And JD Drew is having just as bad a year as Ortiz so far, but no one talks about it.
I would love to see them trade for a defensive catcher for the future, but they wont do it.
This would have worked, if they could have traded lowell to Texas for one of their two young catchers. Unfortunately, Varitek sucks just as bad throwing out runners. And now with Beltre there is no point in moving V-Mart to first. The team is just fatally flawed right now. The big talk is trading for Adrian Gonzalez. Great for offense, but won’t help the stolen base issues.
The problem with Papi is that the Red Sox fans arent used to seeing him struggle out of the gate. Its a fairly new problem that occured last year what with age and injuries. If you take out April and the beginning of may his hitting numbers were adequate last year. They werent elite like he used to be, though. Also, this year, Ortiz should be on a shorter leash with Lowell rotting on the bench when he could be a more than adequate DH. He’s worth taking a shot on, he should just never start against left handed pitching, placing him in a platoon with Lowell.
Money isn’t an issue when it comes to trading Papi. Keep in mind that the Sox can say “we’ll pick up his salary” (they paid the $9 million for the remaining 50 or so games when they dealt Manny to LA, for example).
There’s no question that they’ll lead the league in stolen bases against, not just because of genuinely shitty pick-offing skillz, but also because of the fact that the Sox play against a lot of teams that can steal. The Rays in particular.
I’m not at all nervous about Papi, though. They can give him some more at bats, see if he can be potentially useful, and if he isn’t, they can keep rolling with Lowell at DH (or 3B).
I know its funny talking about salary issues when it comes to the red sox. But as of lately the Red Sox have been seeking out ‘perfect deals.’ It’s like they just copied the Patriots value system and I don’t think Theo Epstein is ready to add more money to his ‘paying for players no longer on the team’ fund. Thats kind of an entirely different discussion than just Ortiz though, so its beside the point.
Yeah their are a plethora of players just in the AL East that are good at stealing. But, when Vlad Guerrero circa 2010 steals 2 bases on you in one game. Thats a problem.
Im not sure if you are a Red Sox fan or just a baseball fan. But you should be very nervous about Ortiz. He can’t hit the fastball, period. He has to cheat. Pitchers know this so they throw him off speed stuff and he can’t hit it. He can’t catch up to 89 mph fast balls. He cant get on base with 3-0 and 3-1 counts. However, like you said, they can just roll with Lowell, or when the outfield gets off the DL, they can roll with Hermida, or some combination of the three.
Case in point. Hey guys, lets upgrade our defense in left field… Fuck Jason Bay and his offensive numbers. We need more range in front of the green monster.
Ellsbury is a pretty horrible outfielder though so left field is the best place to hide him. They would have been much better off keeping Jason Bay and moving J.D. Drew to DH or something.
Yeah he had a -12 or so UZR in center field but actually had a positive value in LF, although Im sure the tiny Left Field in fenway helped that number out. But if you put Drew at DH who plays RF?
Drew is pretty good at RF so leave him there, cut Ortiz and have Bay at DH. When you need to rest someone shift Ellsbury around.
I think Boston pitching is going to negatively affected by the inability to stop other teams from stealing bases though. Every walk/single can be a double now and the pitchers will have to constantly be worried about holding the runner while trying to focus on pitching. Bad times incoming.
I think you’re right, I would imagine its in their mind every time a man is on first. I can’t wait to see Daisuke pitch, gonna be a fucking train wreck.
Rsigley:
The only starter who gives you bad defense is V-Mart. Bill Hall sucks, Hermida is an acceptable 4th outfielder. I don’t know why you think Drew and Cameron give you bad defense.
The bullpen is fucking terrible. They have Papelbon, Bard, Okajima and then a bunch of suck. Watching Ramirez pitch is depressing and it feels like Delcarmen is the human version of a white flag.
