NW Competitive Fighting Game League "Season One" Results Thread

I think there might be another gaming night next week (7/13), but I’ll wait for Zach to announce it before changing this thread’s title. If this was indeed the final tournament of the season, it was certainly memorable. Thanks to Zach for putting up with our shenanigans. Great games to all, especially Evan for sweeping the loser’s finals in MvC2, and Nate for sweeping the grand finals in ST.

The up to date tournament history file can be downloaded from Rapidshare via this link. If people have any recommendations as to better places to host it, I’m willing to listen. I just started using rapidshare because it was the first place I found, and I was in a hurry due to the complaints originating from the last tournament.

MvC2 - 15 players
Rodolfo “Rowtron” Castro - 10 pts.
Evan “Rairu” Wenzel - 7 pts.
Cody “Codyliciouz” Boentaran - 5 pts.
Theo “taiga_knee” Crooks - 3 pts.
Andrew “Mix Masta Drew Dub” Blanchette - 1 pt.
Nolan “Nolander” Deitz - 1 pt.

ST - 13 players
Nate “XTG” Montes - 10 pts.
Keith “DoughBoy” Huang - 7 pts.
Mandel “Deezo” Scott - 5 pts.
Alex “Umbrellastyle” Kelly - 3 pts.
Erick Vega - 1 pt.
Kenneth “Tempest253” Clark - 1 pt.

Memorable notes from last night:

  • Game 1 of the Rairu vs. Codyliciouz loser’s final was the oddest game I’ve ever seen in my life. I can’t wait until that gets uploaded. Never have I seen so many things LOOK like they weren’t going to hit, but connected.
  • Cody’s could be caught by Row; in theory. If Row wins the next tournament, and if Cody doesn’t place, Row will come out ahead in the final standings. Even if Cody gets 5th and Row wins, Row owns the tiebreaker. There’s no real prize other than pride, but the notion at least adds a touch of drama.
  • This is the first time all season that the Marvel grand finals drew more than 3 spectators.
  • Theo and Andrew drove from Eugene, OR to attend. That’s hardcore. They also took 4th and 5th, respectively. Good stuff.
  • Murakumo’s Dhalsim is nuts. For those of you that didn’t make it tonight, you missed a great exhibition.
  • Good job Evan on 3 straight strong performances in Marvel tournaments.
  • Cody came in late, and started in the loser’s bracket. He still took 3rd. Most impressive.
  • Mandel and Zach finished on the Marvel bubble, and deserve mention.
  • Pablo was buzzed, but never truly drunk. I came home to find that there wasn’t a single drunk post? A great opportunity wasted. Quelle dommage.
  • Isn’t Jaeger a white-fraternity drink? Is there even 40% alcohol in that shit?
  • Happy birthday to Rodolfo!!!
  • Did everyone see Umbrellastyle rep’ing the ST players in the Marvel tournament. It was truly inspirational. Keep training for next time Alex.
  • On the flip side, Julian is a liar and a cheat. The man said that he would enter MvC2 as soon as he got a job. Then he said that he would enter the second tournament after he got a job. Last night, he backtracked once more and said he wouldn’t enter because he hadn’t practiced. If we do not abide by our covenants made, there is no justice in the world. Julian, you are a disgrace to civilized men everywhere. Your pusillanimous nature makes me sick. You should be banished to the wilderness to fend for yourself, as you forfeited the goodness and order of society.
  • Pleasure to meet Zero and his crew. Hope you guys got home safely.
  • Where was Kyle last night? Is the ToC dead in the water? Is he pocketing all of the proceeds?
  • Julian, you never gave me my arcade stick. Further proof of his savagery.
  • With the absence of zass, all ST players basically finished one place higher than they’re used to.:bgrin:
  • Nate has all but cemented his lead in the ST season rankings.
  • Wasfemto failed to show up and beat off queers for free. According to the previously post in this thread, Kuenai was obviously disappointed.
  • Much obliged to Julian, Pablo, Nate, and Alex for chipping in and coming up with my entry fee for ST. Were it not for Alex’s stoicism (entering the MvC2 tourney), I would not have entered the ST tournament. I should point out the reason that I gave you guys each 25 cents in addition to paying you back. This was so that all 4 of you have to be present to pay for my entry fee next time. I’ll not accept a loan again, my pride couldn’t take it.
  • When the ST footage gets posted, watch the final game between Tempest253 and Deezo. That game could have gone either way, and ended in a WTF moment.
  • The great Cornholio earned his first ranking point by chomping faces. Congrats Kenny.
  • Yet another strong showing by Alex in ST. He’s poised to overtake Airthrow. You gonna take that, Julian!?
  • I listened to Switchup’s CD on the way home, and almost drove into Lake Washington. I must have been really tired. The tranquil music almost put me out. Perhaps Alex was right, I can’t handle the rhythm.
  • Zach’s small cab now has optical 360s installed. 3s players rejoice.

Quote of the Evening:
"This is pointless. It’s like trying to convince Dark Prince that Seattle is not on the East Coast."
I don’t recall who said this or what context it was in. I overheard this as I was running around trying to find people for their matches.

Exchange of the Evening:
[responding to Julian’s inquiry of why an ST player would bother entering MvC2
Umbrellastyle: $5 entry fee, I’m going 2 and out, so that’s $2.50 per game.
Me: Well, even if you get swept each match, it’s best of 3, so you get 4 games. Technically, it’s $1.25 per game.
Umbrellastyle: Oh, so that’s like Gameworks prices.

Memorable Phone Conversation of the Night:
Me: I’ve looked all over the house. Where are you?
Rairu: I’m out front.
Me: You’re on deck, so get ready.
Rairu: Who am I playing?
Me: Guess.
Rairu: Oh no, don’t say–
Me: No, it’s not Mandel. You’ll actually like this one. You’ll really, really like this.
[moment of silent contemplation]
Rairu: . . .Jamie?*
Me: Yep.
Rairu: FUCK YEAH!!!
Jamie = Kuenai

Random Quotes of the Night (in no particular order):
“Ratt’s boyfriend was in the room.” - Kuenai
"It’s Julian vs. the haters up in here." - Airthrow
"I hate you Keith." - Pablo_the_Drunk

Current Worst Marvel Player in Seattle: Keith Huang
Current Worst Overall Player in Seattle: David Alvarez

David made it further than me in the Marvel tournament. But I scrapped along further at the kids table. He’ll wear the crown until next week–if there is a gaming night. Otherwise, I guess he’ll retain the title for all time.

That was me actually and I think I said “Oh, so it’s like playing at gameworks then” but close enough.

I bow to your superior knowledge. Memory is a tricky thing.

Kenny playing ST (Bopnation in general) and Trace getting mad during Guilty Gear were the only notable highlights of last night’s event.

“I got heart. You can’t teach heart. I might have gone 0-2, but I’ve still got more heart than anyone here.”

  • Pablo_the_Planeteer

Forgot to include that drunken quote from last night.

sniff Couldn’t make it…maybe I’ll make it to the next one…sniff

Lol. Fuck you.

And that quote was the effect of having little to no sleep for the past three days on a boat.

My favorite moment: Getting Row down to a half-health Cable and half-health Sentinel before losing a character.
Row: Who the fuck are you?

later…

Row: Duc!
Nolan: What?
Row: Duc Do, man! He pulls this shit on me!

I’d really appreciate it if you guys would stop calling me fullscreen super while I’m trying to concentrate on my match.

I’m sorry! The outside cracks! lol! ST shit was nuts…

So who was responsible for this and when did this take place? I watched you when you played Kenny and I don’t remember anything except for Kenny’s madness hahah.

I’ll admit, I was one of the many busters doing this.

LMAO! Outside was off the chain… and Blanka FTW! and this is still on my mind and Deezo you can answer this one…

How the hell did you pull off a throw after a super…

From the CEO of BopNation and all I have to say is…

B.O.P…

253…

My first match against Alex and probably also my second match too. Kenny was my third.

Yea I think I was there to watch that…

Ajay, that’s that new shit I came up with. STSFN (save that shit for nationals). I can’t wait until that match goes online wowowowowo.

Hype!!

Morning folks. The last tournament of the season will soon be upon us. Before I head out today, I figured that I should write up the requisite hype post. Seattle is Marvel country, so show your support for the local scene by giving our competitive players a strong showing before sending them off to Evo West and Worlds. And the ST tournament is only $1 to enter, so why not stick around for that as well? These questions will be answered this Friday, at the final tournaments of the season. Tell everyone you know to attend.

  • 9 points separate the top 2 seeds in both the Marvel and ST rankings. Row and zass will need help in capturing the rankings titles. Is it in the cards? Or will Cody and Nate hang on?
  • Alternatively, will Jmar embarrass both Cody AND Row by going 3 for 3 in Marvel tournaments?
  • Portland hosted a tournament last weekend, so they were not able to attend the tournaments on 7/6. Will they send a contingent up this time? Things are always livelier with their company.
  • Murakumo should once more be present. What other special guests will make an appearance?
  • Will someone from South Seattle be kind enough carpool with Wasfemto to the Zach’s? His absence was felt by an edgy Pablo last time. Seriously, if you can carpool with Wasfemto, PM his ass.
  • Will the Seattle ST players want to pay for my entrance fee again? Given how I cheesed them last time around.
  • Will the portly yet handsome tournament director be assassinated by Mandel and Pablo for picking Claw? Thus stranding Preppy prior to the STP race.
  • Will Kyle Chow even show up this time? Or is the ToC pot lost to the gods?
  • With the season coming to a close, who will be named the definitive Worst Player in Seattle? With Chris Zamanillo visiting family in Florida, the race is wide open.
  • Dann quit MvC2 last week, will he come crawling back this week?
  • Will Julian finally make good on his word and enter the Marvel tournament? Will Alex maintain his word and continue to enter the Marvel tournament? Will other ST players see the way and try out the more stoner friendly game? Colors. . . .
  • Will Mandel face Evan in the 2nd round of the Marvel tournament?
  • Will Mandel face Kenneth in the 2nd round of the ST tournament?
  • Will there be a repeat performance of Pablo_the_Drunk? And if so, can we lock him in a room with Kuenai?
  • Will Kuenai finally money match Pablo and/or Rairu? Will he re-money match me?
  • Can Full Screen Super resist the urge to pull those full screen supers?
  • Can ANYONE beat Julien in an ST match?
  • More importantly, can I get my arcade stick back from Julian?
  • Will Umbrellastyle finally break through and place above 4th in ST? He’s got the talent, but he needs to borrow some heart from Pablo.
  • What will the controversy stem from this time?
  • Honestly, does anyone read this shit?
  • When and how will season 2 of the NW Competitive Fighting Game League get underway?

Be there this Friday for the answers to these questions, and more. Marvel for $5 at 8PM, ST for $1 at 11PM. Poker [I think it’s $11 to play] for the gambling junkies starting whenever enough people grumble. Get there on time or risk getting a crappy bracket placement. Bring sticks, bring booze. See you there.

That’s that New New Shit that you was talkin about!

What they kno bout that?!

End of the season predictions, I wanna hear them. I’ve got a few. If you’ve ever played Fallout or its sequel, imagine the ending of that game as your read the text below. A sort of somber prognostication, if you will.

  • Evan will define his play style as a mixture of psychotic combos, crazed rushdowns, and organized chaos. Evo2k7 will be remembered as the debut of IFCRairu. He will lose to Duc Do in the finals.
  • The interest in ST grows steadily in our local scene. By Evo2k8, Seattle will place 5 players in the top-8 for ST. Seattle will be regarded as the new Mecca for old skool gaming. Middle aged yuppies the world over will travel to Seattle to seek tips on how to dominate classic games such as Mega Man, Pitfall, Tecmo Superbowl, and Custard’s Revenge.
  • Having decided that he has too much heart, Pablo_the_Mex offers to donate his left atrium and ventricle. He organ donation application is refused when his blood alcohol level is deemed unacceptable for medical transplants.
  • Zach’s stress level is directly related to the number of people yelling in his house. After the season concludes, he will find peace and tranquility. Sadly, the soothing calm will wash over him during his STP bike ride. Succumbing to slumber, he would take many hippie bikers out with him. The pavement will be covered with human hair.
  • Chris will get married, have many children, write a best selling non-fiction novel, get rich, live to grow old, and cure 2 forms of cancer. At nights, he would always dream of the summer that he COULD have been the worst player in Seattle.
  • Frank will regret not having entered in more of the MvC2 tournaments. As his former roommates go on to become notable names in the competitive gaming community, he will wish that he had taken better advantage of the opportunity afforded him to honing his skills. He would go onto share a studio apartment in Tacoma with Plummer.
  • Cody will keep playing FFOnline. He will become the first documented American to suffer a video game related death when a blood clot formed in his leg during a 31 hour raid moves to his liver when he got up to use the restroom. His last thoughts will be that of his Lolita.
  • Ratt and Keith still won’t bother to get jobs.
  • David, Nate, and Julian will open an arcade in the U-District, reviving the local competitive gaming scene. They will be bought out by zass in a hostile takeover, so that Julien can get more cabs to put into his townhouse.
  • Nolan frequents the new local arcade, basking in his role as a teacher to the next generation of MvC2 players. It reminds him of his days at the UW. After the arcade is purchased by Julien and closed down, Nolan is stricken between finally purchasing a Dreamcast, or never playing MvC2 again. His suicide note read: “MftW”.
  • Having wasted his youth, looks, and money playing fighting games, Julien is no longer able to trick women into tending his home and garden. He would get 3 former arcade owners to serve as his ethic housekeepers. They would go on to file a joint suit against him for sexual harassment. They lose because Julien is white.
  • Mandel becomes the host for Betaism radio. Millions tune into his web broadcast weekly to hear about his most recent “worst Marvel session ever”.
  • Jason, Rodolfo, and numerous other gambling addicts continue to search for Kyle and the ToC pot that he took with him.
  • Umbrellastyle will travel the world over in search of meaning to his SRK handle, signature, and subtitle. He will also be driven mad trying to figure out why DeeJay is always smiling.
  • Bopnation is forced to change its name. What was once a cutting edge term that defined the urban vernacular, “bops” is assimilated into suburban white boy lingo after Kenneth Clark’s spoken word album is released to multi-platinum success. Along with “fo shizzle”, “wiggidy wack”, "and “guap/gwop”, “bops” is no longer used by urban individuals with their fingers on the collective pulse of entertainment. Hoping to defy convention–and to piss off Al Sharpton–Bopnation arises out of the ashes as NiggaNation. Their later works are not as well received.

This was a pointless post. I’m spamming in my own thread. I guess what I’m alluding to is, it’s been fun running this season’s events, and getting to know all of you. If I failed to mock someone in this post, don’t worry, it’s not because I don’t love ya. There’s only so much smut that I can spew in one sitting. If I offended, I apologize, as this was not my intent.

Hope to see you tonight. MvC2 at 8PM for $5, ST at 11PM for $1. And if you have predictions of your own, post here. We’re half a day away. Still enough time to build hype.

Man I’m tired of this bullshit, once I get more comfortable with boxer I’m going to start kicking some ass and get that gwop.

I withdraw my name from the worst player competition, clearly it’s rigged as there is no mathematical way Keith has the title. Shit is fixed son!

Plus Mandel convinced me that I shouldn’t put so much effort into Marvel, so I’m gonna concentrate more on ST. Speak the truth. I probably won’t see you all til next month, but I have a feeling someone will still run the ST tournaments after the “season” is over, it’s just too fun.
