Nova Question And Answer Thread

People mash…A LOT lmao. That’s why I try to have little variations to my incoming. IMO, I feel like after a while, Nova incoming should come down to how you feel about/what you have read about the player. Against someone like Ray, I may not want to do something as systematic/lab-test-able as the Insaynne. I may wanna freestyle a bit and respond to how he moves and stuff. If i know someone likes pressing buttons, ima just put a shield and meaty j.M. Stuff like that

I still think the best meaty setup Nova has is sj airdash down j.H assistless. It gives you a good idea on your opponents pushblock tendencies and allows you to adjust accordingly. You can also delay for cross up once they’re scared of the meaty and you can also throw assists in the mix.

Also cent rush M + assist or energy javelin + assist are very strong.

I use Cold Star so they get hit and die and whine about Ammy.

also what Marv said

Cold Star
Best frame trap in the world

I really love to abuse Centurion M/H + Cold Star, especially mid-screen. For some reason people never really expect it.

Also can we agree that Centurion H is nova’s coolest attack? I just love the way it looks

Tied with 5M, yeah. I love that gut punch so much.

I’m thinking of implementing TK Rocket Punches in my neutral game. Because I use Doom, I think only L is usable and maybe M if I time it right
What do you guys think of it?
I have nothing to contribute for this since I haven’t practiced in a while

What’s the point of a TK Rocket Punch in neutral tho? You can just Beam + dp.L and get a confirm/mixup, right?

Ok
i played around with it for a bit
it’s really nice
i can get a j.L after the punch and create a last minute fuzzy i think (I recorded the opponent to crouch block. After blocking PB, it blocks the j.L for some reason)
whiff j.M or j.H and go low or throw
on hit is the worst case scenario, you only get a 450k combo
M RP seems sufficient due to j.L hitbox.

You get a j.L in the air before you land, it’s hard to punish since they can’t grab you since you’re technically in the air, and it’s relatively safe at max distance. Also, if you fuck up and you do it too close you can always cancel into speed tackle to punish their attempt to punish you similar to how Hulk does with Gamma Crush after his Gamma Charges.

Awesome, I’ll work on implementing this. Sounds like it’d be godlike with bolts.

Also, after messing around with Nova/Strange/Ammy a bit, I feel like in some matchups maybe the Nova/Ammy/Strange order is a little better seeing how Strange falls like a rock on incoming and Ammy can at least mash or airdash out of bad setups.

Nemo does this with bolts. It’s kind of where I got it from

I need more testing on it but it’s definitely a frame trap.

Nova/Ammy/Strange seems sad though
The DHC :’(

So I was testing variations of the Insayne incoming setup I think i came across a really useful option select. So after you recover from throwing the javelin you do a ground dash, normal jump forward, then either down-back or down-forward + H+M ~ L

So if they pushblock, you wil get the airthrow sadly I dont believe its a true guard break because the training mode dummy was always able to tech it. If this throw is teched you wil either airdash down-back to safety or down forward with L to continue pressure (might cross under)

If they dont pushblock they block plasma beam and are forced to land and you will either crossup j.L (midscreen only) or hit with it in front both will combo to c.L at its max range. You can also empty tri jump into grab here.

Tested this for a while and it feels pretty useful and very consistent both corner and midscreen. The only way to land safely would be to pushblock the javelin, tech the throw, and then somehow get away from nova + an incoming javelin so breaking that throw is a mixup in and of itself. Maybe you guys can test this out some more maybe im overlooking something…

H Rocket Punch is definitely very useful to throw out once in a while in neutral. It moves super far and at the right range, you should be safe after recovering. I tend to throw one out once in a while if I have alot of meter or just to see what happens. Good against players that like to move a lot on offensive. I tend to never get punished very hard for it. I run into a projectile and that’s it. Meaty damage if it connects too. :o

Lol, got some energy javelin tech right here… Nova/Ammy strike again! You have to have the Nova/Ammy order (not Nova/x/Ammy) and be willing to spend 2 bars and XF, but it’s a guaranteed guard break. Good against the last char.

Just do an Energy Javelin on incoming, cancel into Nova Force (which hits meaty) dhc to Veil of Mist and X-factor, wait for them to land and throw. Even if you mess up the setup and they manage to break the throw, you can just keep mashing and get it guaranteed because lol XF+Veil. The only problem is if they choose to take the hit… haven’t figured out an optimal combo for that yet but it can definitely be done.

So Nova with Rocks might be a lot better than I originally thought. Might even be better for my team than Plasma Beam since i lack a suitable lockdown assist. Green Ace and myself experimented with it last night and the offensive/defensive capabilities of the assist are pretty powerful. It’s also much better for Strider.

I’ll be labbing with it this week and I’ll report what I find.

Helps a lot vs. Wolverine and other super aggressive chars. Kinda sucks for Doom/Ammy players though since it makes the team super weird.

I think it makes the team super better. As in, it might be actually faster and Doom recovers more quickly to allow more mixups.

Though I do agree that beam will probably be better for your team since you already have access to cold star.

It’s just for incoming, Sphere Flame makes Doom more vulnerable more quickly. It may just be muscle memory so I’ll try new setups later.

Rocks still has benefits over Cold Star like the fast startup. You can’t really use Cold Star vs Wolverine in neutral. But it’s really a matchup thing, Plasma Beam is better against most chars and Rocks are even worse vs Bolts.

After playtesting it some more, Rocks are terrible vs certain characters but godlike vs others. So I’d have to really grind it out to see.
