Nova Question And Answer Thread

I love watching Insaynne/Coach Steve’s Nova… then he goes and changes it out for some wack Wesker team or runs point Ammy vs. Magneto (one of her worst matchups). The hell!

Yeah, I don’t know why he did that. STICK TO YOUR GUNS

He’s learning different teams right now. Pretty much wants to have Vergil in his arsenal. Steve has a player problem vs Magneto also. We all enjoy watching his Nova, but sometimes he loses interest in the team.

This was during Loser’s Finals and Grand Finals at Civil War tho… I understand those problems but, of all times lol

He should play Nova/Doom/Vergil.

I mean, what the fuck was he thinking playing Ammy? Steve is my dude, but shit. Nova can fight Mags!

Point Ammy would have been AWESOME vs Unknown! She handles Wesker and Sent really well if she has a beam. But he went with Wesk/Doover for that… Not sure what the strat was. Ah well when he did play Nova it was legit.

His whole thing is he wants to play Doom Vergil when he doesn’t want to put in too much effort and think too much so that includes having to play Nova pretty much

i have a question about an incoming setup with nova, ive seen nemo and yipes do it recently. How do u the speed tackle on incoming, like what dashes do u do, and how do u change direction? it looks like theyre dash forward then up, then jumping, but cant seem to get it.

also what are some other incoming setups with nova/strange/spencer
im also have trouble against modok, because of his shield. any tips?

After SOV, DHC to speed tackle and direct it up forward twice. I’m pretty sure you need to do it twice to get the proper spacing/timing. Other than that just work on the timing, you may be doing it too fast.

Speed Tackle the shield on reaction, he cannot cancel it into anything except X-Factor so it’ll likely be a free punish -> death thanks to Spencer/Strange. If he’s putting it out under assist call, get out of the assist’s space first and then Speed Tackle (this may turn into a happy birthday as well).

i can get the incoming set up right with just nova out by doin foward, then upforward, but when i dhc to him from SOV, the opponent keeps coming out midscreen instead of corner, and im doing the upforward upforward.

also whats a good set up to cross up opponent with J.L i can do it in training modde, but in a real match, i can never get behind them

To be honest, cross up IOH should be just as much a surprise to you as it is to your opponent during actual match

You only need to do the Speed Tackle up-forward once. Up-forward twice gives you more recovery time. The reason they’re coming out midscreen is because you haven’t crossed over the dead body. Jump over the body sooner to cross up. Other incoming mixups are pretty simple to start, it’s just the mixup once they hit the ground that counts. When they come in, delay bolts and dash over them for crossup. Air dash dolphin kick, fly and do high attacks. Or go low.

So… How can Nova catch magneto? I’m running Nova/Doom/Vergil, and I am not seeing any way of getting in on a Magneto who just sits around plinkdashing at the top of the screen all day. At all. Nova has no good options up there, his top of the screen confirms suck, and let’s assume that this magneto isn’t shit and thus won’t get hit by quite possibly the lamest projectile in the game this side of Hsien-Ko. Let’s also assume that just camping him out and waiting for him to come to you isn’t an option, because it’s Alioune-Sensei and “waiting” means “giving him infinite bar for his fucking dark phoenix and morrigan”. I am ready to smash my fucking controller with a hammer, because I don’t see any options. I got nothing. Every angle that Nova is good in is either irrelevant or covered by magnetic blasts. What can I do? Same question for Morrigan, too - dashing under just gets shell-kicked, assuming that there isn’t already a fireball in the way, and coming in from the top seems patently worthless against a character with a DP, a great airdash, and multiple slow-moving, meaty projectiles that you will get hit by if he blocks, which he can because he can unfly out of specials. I am just totally lost against this team. I have no idea what to do.

  1. You need to chill out
  2. Watch Moons/Coach Steve vs RayRay matches

Lol I’m going to answer this since 1) Mags is my main 2) I basically started playing this game vs. Nova/Spencer vía a friend and 3) I firmly believe Nova is Magneto’s worst matchup.

Look you basically rape Magneto. I mean there are things that he can do but he will have to downright outplay you to win. Any autipilot on his part and he’s dead.

First what’s this about you controlling irrelevant angles lol? Put up a pulse sit back and call Doom while throwing javelins. Now disruptor is a joke and jumping is a pain. But you say he has morrigan Phoenix so you can’t wait him out. No problem; he gets raped by your normals. If he’s on the ground call Doom Box dash H throw OS like crazy. You get a free mixup on block, if he jumps your half screen airthrow will grab him, and if he presses a button you get a free combo because your dolphin kick crushes his normals. Also if you’re feeling lazy you can always just high speed tackle in on him. There’s nothing he can do about it.

As far as him plinking at the top of the screen. If you think javelins suck vs. that you’re on autopilot. You have to mix them with the threat of your absurd air throw and messing up his inputs. Chuck a javelin then plinkdash under him and then jump OS airthrow dolphin kick. See how much longer he plinks in flight while you do that.

And just a general rule against Mags: you shouldnt be blocking much against him. Take advantage of him having more complicated inputs than you and rush him non stop. He needs time/space to get setup and to do his inputs–you don’t. He really can’t rush you down without assist cover. If you’re rushing him nonstop he can’t call them. If you see him press a button on the ground press low medium; it beats everything that he does on the ground free. Use that to bait mag blasts and airthrow him. You shouldn’t have much trouble if your opponent isn’t named RayRay.

By the way how is Phoenix consistently causing you a problem when you have anchor vergil? Are you dying on incoming? Your teamis basically a hard counter to his.

I’ve been trying to do this but his landings are totally covered. I can’t anticipate the landing and go in or wait around on the ground because there’s just too much coverage. Maybe I’m not fast enough on the ground or something? If I try to get underneath I eat a magblast almost every time, or I just don’t move quick enough to keep up with his plinks.

Okay, I’m obviously doing something wrong here, because whenever I throw a javelin, the next thing that happens is, like clockwork, he dashes up and away, it misses completely, and he’s fullscreen again. By the time I could get to where he is, the javelin has missed and he can do basically whatever he wants. I don’t get it at all.

Oh, I’m not blocking. Because the only interaction we have is me getting hit by magnetic blasts (into a full combo) and him occasionally pushblocking. And he may not be RayRay, but he’s no slouch (Alioune-Sensei). He never uses ground normals. Ever.

My vergil still very much holds the “WIP” stamp. If I can survive killing her (which is not a given, because if you get hit by the transformation explosion, 9/10 times he will xfactor and kill you off of it) with 2 bars, I’m usually in a pretty good spot. It just never comes to that, because I lose the neutral game so hard. I should record some matches or something, but I’m not sure how to hook up the gear I have to my new PC. Because if this is such a hard counter, I shouldn’t be feeling so completely helpless.

Okay, so you’re playing Alioune, who is I would say a top 10 Magneto player in this game, or close enough that we can compare him to RayRay in terms of movement and tight setups. Make no mistake, Nova is at advantage vs. Magneto but if the Magneto player knows to pick their spots it’s not free by any means. Nova’s normals do have hitspheres that give Mags trouble, but Mags also has much greater freedom of movement which allows him to play even neutral in a 1v1 match. You do have PB to fight him which is good, but it’s no Vajra and it’s no Bolts, both of which are much better to pin Mags down.

In this matchup, freedom of movement is all Mags needs. Alioune’s runaway is godlike, and it takes 15ish Marvel seconds for him to get 5 bars just from mashing Harmonizer, as I’m sure you’re well aware. Mags loses to Nova the worst when he’s throwing projectiles full screen or rushing him down without a (suitable) assist, and Alioune is wise to not go for that shit. You have to make him the aggressor, otherwise you’re just playing into his hands.

So there’s two things you should be going for:

  1. hitting Mags at the start of the round. Walk up throw and react to the likely tech. Chase him and threaten with air throws, use plasma beam to keep him on the ground, etc. All the stuff Bill was talking about applies here for as long as you can keep him in your space, it’s once he gets away that the matchup gets annoying. Make that opening decision count. If he’s getting aggressive at the start you can start reacting to forward advances with stand jab and/or snap.

  2. sniping Morrigan. This is hard obviously since Harmonizer recovers so quickly, but if you can read (or hear) the call and react, it’ll actually limit his movement quite a bit. His gameplan is to be at super jump height and call Harmonizer since that’s pretty safe for Magneto, but if you start hitting and killing Morrigan he’ll have to think more about when and where to call her, cause if Morrigan dies that means he HAS to start going in.

This is probably hard vs. Alioune but try to spot unsafe/unwise Mag Blasts. You can space your shield to try and encourage (or more likely discourage) these situations.
Normal height, dash back Mag Blast: jump and box dash H/call beam. Pretty simple, should put him in blockstun if he doesn’t get hit, if you’re out of range get ready to throw javelin or chase him down with an air throw. This is unwise vs. Nova but Alioune may do it sometimes.
Normal height, dash forward Mag Blast: super jump ADD/ADDF j.H, or dash under 5L anti air, or dash under air throw.
SJ height, he’s in flight, and does Mag Blast without dashing: you can dash under and air throw this, or use javelin. Alioune almost certainly won’t do this.
SJ height, he’s just unflied or flight just ran out, Mag Blast: chicken guard the Blast and throw him. A Magneto player will feel really foolish if they do this vs. a smart player, but it happens so keep an eye out.

As for Morrigan, look for a ground Soul Fist and react with Speed Tackle, challenge her with Javelin from about mid-screen (much harder during AV), and use beam to keep her from starting her game.

Vergil vs. Phoenix explained here:

And don’t forget the Japanese tech.

Last, as dougiie said try to calm down a bit. At this stage you probably should be losing vs. a player of this caliber so just take your licks and learn the matchup, it’ll do you and your heart better.

Lol just noticed that youre playing alioune. Like Disco said that’s the real problem. He never uses ground normals vs. Nova huh lol? Sounds like he really knows the match up…Now you just have to do the same thing! Watch match vids and go to training mode.

I have gotten pretty good at sniping morrigan with the beam; the trick is the followup afterwards. Cent rush L seems pretty unsafe, and I’m not close enough for cr.M most of the time. I’m trying to be aware of that, it’s not easy though. I think the next thing to do is just practice my dashing. I keep on messing up my plinks, which makes it really impossible to get close.

It is a relief to realize that Alioune is really good; I mean, I had a feeling but “top 10 or so in the world”? Okay. Good to know. That vid about spiral swords is really good. It’s easy to forget how long the startup on Phoenix’s transformation is. I try not to lose my cool, but this feeling of total helplessness… It bugs me. It’s like, if I fight something like a really good Wolverine team, I at least feel like “Okay, if I do this differently, if I block that, if I read that I can get in this game”. With this… I have no idea. It doesn’t seem like anything works, and that hurts. I’ll try some of the advice here. See if I can’t do a little better in the neutral game.

Weird matchups are like that, man. It took me like a solid month to adapt to point Shuma/Unibeam but I know how to fight it now, for what it’s worth. If you can start taking games off of Alioune, any other Mag/Morr/Phoenix you run into should be no problem. Good luck!
