Nova Question And Answer Thread

Hey everyone I need quick help on getting the Nova/ Spencer assist timing I’ve seen Combofiend do the launcher with Nova and Spencer assist then crumple. I can never get it right after the f+H. Is there any helpful tips on timing and execution? I do f+H, S+A1, Backwards TK+H. My opponent is always launched before spencer assist connects.

Don’t call Spencer the same time as you do S. Do f.H, delay a bit, call Spencer, wait a tiny bit, S xx TK Human Rocket Punch. It gives Spencer time to come in and catch them out of the launch.

Question: What are you people using as TAC fake-out frametrap? I’ve been resetting them with j.L then going straight from j.H to L Nova Strike but sometimes that leaves nova way too above the opponent for me to dash down in time and I find that if the opponent doesn’t mash S, they’ll block the Nova Strike and grab punish me out of it. What suggestions do you have?

thanks this helped me a lot! I’m able to get it more consistently, though I cant get the TK cent rush to continue the combo meter.

L, H xx fly

Quite a general question but what do you guys do?

Traditional wavedash backwards or plink dash?

I’m at a loss as what I should do. Most pro players wavedash backwards, I can’t do it if my life depended on it. I can plink dash somewhat, have more success than wavedashing however

If im trying to get away in a really fast fashion i just plink but if im trying to outspace but still stay within a certain range i wave dash backward.

I wave dash for both directions.

What is the main idea of Nova’s incoming games setups?
I run Nova/IM (unibeam)/? (atm it’s hawkeye but i may switch to Dante(JS))

Nova’s incoming is some of the best in the game IMO.

Solo Corner:

  1. Gravimetric Pulse H slightly outside the corner. Superjump before they come in and boxdash over them with j.h. It’s a strong 50/50.

  2. SJ up ADD j.H. Can cross up or not. If they pushblock your j.H, guardbreak them. After you’ve established that you’d throw them you can start mixing it up with st.L. If you have an assist ready you can then call your assist if they blocked the first layer.

Solo Midscreen:

  1. Properly timed boxdash j.H can cross up or not on incoming. Takes practice but once you get it established its a solid 50/50.
  2. Properly timed energy javelin can either cross up or not.
  3. Diagonal airdash near where they’re incoming, dash back to the same side. 50/50.

Midscreen with assists:

  1. Same as without an assist, except you can save the assists for after they blocked your initial mixup giving you an additional chance to mix them up.

  2. Cent Rush L + assist. You cross under them with the Cent Rush L/M, they block the first side mixup, your assist hits them and you get an additional high/low.

Corner with assists:

The idea with most of these is to also throw a javelin asap to meaty their incoming so they’re forced to take your shit.

  1. Cent Rush H cross up - only viable with drones or cold star as far as I know, but very strong.

  2. Cent Rush L cross up - viable with various assists. Dash very close to the corner, cent rush L + assist on their incoming. It’ll either cross them up or not and the way that Cent Rush hits them bounces them back to the front of you making for a very easy confirm. Very strong.

  3. Call your assist, sj and box dash over them with j.H. Similar to the pulse mixup except better since your assist gives you an additional high/low/throw mixup after the incoming left/right. Dual layered mixups are what you want with all of your characters. Very strong with Unibeam, Plasma Beam, Arrows, Rapid Slash, Drones, Vajra, Weasel Shot, etc.

  4. Basic incoming - energy Javelin, meaty Cent Rush M, they block your assist. High/low. Not the strongest, but it’s the standard and if you don’t have enough time to get into the corner this works.

  5. Call your assist, diagonally airdash under them, go high/low on the opposite side of them. It’s another dual layered. Leads to some very ambiguous mixups. It doesn’t seem like you’re going to cross them up, but you end on the other side. Very strong with Plasma Beam and other projectile assists.

Those are pretty much my go/to incoming setups with Nova, I’ve been wanting to make a video to demonstrate all this, but I’ve been way too busy practicing for CEO!

TBH, I’m a pad player and I can do both but I just wavedash…IMO, a good and consistent wave dash can move just as fast if not faster than plink dashing…at least in my opinion…only downfall is it looks a bit sloppier.

good stuffs, you should really take the time and copy helpful posts like this somewhere. It seems like kinda general basic Nova’s knowledge.

I will check which work when people respect, and which will not.
First need to train all those Mags air dash up, Strider weird command air command dash and Vergil’s helm breakers to respect my authority.

Yesterday I ran the team for the first time against someone, and after snap I got the proper mixup 1 out of 5 (good case scenario), the bright side is, I got myself into happy birthday situation only 1 out of 2, so i’m not salty at all (not really, so salty)

btw, I want to time the assist (unibeam in my case) so it hits right after my Nova’s attack hit (or blocked) right (I guess this is kinda no brainier)

And again, thank you very much for the detailed answer

No problem man. I agree. I’ll see if I can start a new thread sometime with all this shit stickied.

What do u guys think about disruptor for nova. Novas prob ny best point and xxx dorm mag is prob my best shell. What do u guys think sbout combining those 2? Thanks!

Read some pages backward, every few pages the exact same question rises.
The short answer, no they don’t work well.

Pretty much the only way you can pair them together efficiently is if Magneto is on point with Nova 2nd. Magneto takes advantage of Nova’s assist more than Nova takes advantage of Magneto’s. Put an effective anchor in the back that provides an assist they both can use and you’re in there.

Options are

  1. Doom with Plasma Beam.
  2. Drones.
  3. Bolts.
  4. Unibeam
  5. Daggers
anyway you get the point. There are assists I’m missing that would probably work fine, but Doom will likely be the best fit.

Mags/Nova/Doom with Plasma Beam can probably work fine especially since Doom supports both of those characters so well.

I posted about this earlier and actually…I don’t think it is THAT BAD anymore…I started messing with it a bit and I love it…but you’re gunna NEED another assist though like Marvelo said. I’m gunna be playing Nova Task Magneto because Magneto assist helps Taskmaster a lot.

I gave a brief testing for the setups you mentioned.

  1. Some of them just won’t work after snap (not enough time to setup javelin for example)
  2. Some require respect, (no buttons, no dashed etc…)
  3. With “Call assist, sj box dash j.C” I couldn’t get ground block with unibeam (if they just hold upbackward). maybe I missed time it.
  4. If i want them to block unibeam after snap I can go with j.m + IM j.H (they land and block) should react to push block with guardbreak). I think it might be weak to XF throw
  5. I think I get good results with call assist 623+M meaty but I think they can u/f to avoid the mixup (unibeam won’t last enough) (throw possible as always)

I should really watch some more matches, try to look up for those snap back techs

Part of the mixup is whether or not the person doing it thinks it’s going to work though. No mixup is a 100% way to mix someone up.

Most of the mixups I do, including the Cent Rush L are meaty setups. You can’t even helm breaker it. Practice the timing. Also, during a snap you might need to forgo a javelin if you’re doing the airdash mixup.
Also, the unibeam mixup with the boxdash is a left/right mixup. It should push them into you giving you a high/low after they block in the air. If they’re chicken blocking that means you can hit them low.

Maybe I can get around to making a video this week before CEO.

I understand that, but still, need to have setup for each situation.
If someone can airdash away from it, it still might be okay. But if mashers will happy birthday you out of it, then you better drop it and quick
