Nova Question And Answer Thread

So I went to my first locals during the weekends<div><br></div><div>I found some Nova players but they weren’t the greatest. What got me was that they were still using iAD H. I’m wondering if this is a very good tool and if I should use it more often. I kind of tie this to Dante’s j.S which are generally performed by bad players</div>

So wait, they’d super jump then air dash H? More than they’d do like iADD L? That’s weird if that’s the case. However, ADD H is an insanely stupid incoming mixup that I always get hit by

not super jump though
just standard jump, call assist, air dash h
they’re free to energy javelin mix ups on incoming though

Oh, forward air dash.<div>I mean, that’s Nova’s primary form of approach. Dolphin kick has a big-ass hitbox and you can option select an air throw with it. It’s not scrubby, you just need to do it at the right time so you don’t get punished for it, and using an assist really helps with that. There are some matchups like vs. Dante or Vergil where you don’t want to do it at all though.</div>

Is there any way to get more damage off throws that need his Slam to follow up off of? Or do I have to stick with what I got? I play Nova/Strange/Doom. And does Missiles really help Nova?

What’s with all these emote DPs?<div><br></div><div>Anyway, you’re in luck</div><div><br></div><div>Off a ground throw, you can do a raw tag combo with Strange. I’m capped so no vids.</div><div>It does involve, Nova Slam, S, j.H, Rocket Punch Wall Bounce, Fly, H, Unfly, Tag Strange, FoF loops</div><div><br></div><div>Off an air throw, you can do a raw tag combo with Doom</div><div>After a throw, whiff H for corner or ADD H midscreen. Tag Doom, M(1Hit), S, Foo-Foot Dive!</div>

Yeah that team has godlike hard tag synergy and you should be able to kill most characters off a throw no problem, except for mid-screen ground throws. Just be sure to end your Doom hard tag with (call Nova assist) air Plasma Beam L, land, Plasma Beam H, wait, cancel to Photon Array, DHC into whatever. If you get the juggle right Photon Array does way more than Sphere Flame and sets up a DHC to Nova better.<div><br></div><div>We go back and forth on this all the time, but the general consensus is that Missiles is only good for Nova if you have another beam assist already. And you do. Bolts/Missiles is definitely a good assist shell for Nova.</div>

My friend and I were thinking… would anyone care to say that Thor wins/does better in certain matchups compared to Nova? What would those matchups be?

Nova has only a few bad matchups: Vergil, Dante, Spencer, and Wolverine are all pretty universally agreed upon. Hulk, Felicia, Taskmaster, and Cap also give some players trouble. I can ask my friend who mains Thor about these matchups but I’m pretty sure the only one Thor would win is against Hulk and maybe Cap.

is the nova infinite hard ? do you have to double tap or plink ? does it have 1frame links ? or is it just a regular combo ?

There are easier versions and harder versions. The easiest one is like a 3 frame link (iirc) that is not hard to do and just involves simple unflying. But there are others using the unfly glitch and weird shit that are more complicated. The easy one is still incredibly effective.

So okay guys, I’ve decided it’s time to buckle down and learn Nova/Doom/Strider. Ammy is just so useless in some matchups like ZMC, and Vajra/Strider would really help out. Tips from @Marvelo and others on how to utilize Vajra effectively with Nova and just Strider’s neutral game in general (even though it’s not really germane to this board lol) would be much appreciated.

totally agree with disco. learning the unfly glitch for nova in general is pretty useful and at times can net you some extra damage, but it is a weird process at first. if you can use it consistently then more power to you–definitely use it, but all of the other variations of the infinite are still viable. more importantly, they all take a long ass time anyway so i don’t really think it makes a difference outside of your comfort zone.

i scrapped ammy a long time ago as well. I just wasn’t feeling her as a character and as beautiful as cold star really is, I just wouldn’t be able to use a character like her. I think Strider is definitely the right move–I’m looking forward to Marvelo’s tech videos coming out soon especially since Nova is now making a permanent spot on my team, pretty much.

I can hardly do the unfly glitch at all  No idea how Insaynne does it consistently in both the infinite and BNBs.

I’m definitely not dropping Ammy, but I want Strider as a counterpick pretty badly right now.

If you guys have already said this, I’m sorry. Looking into Nova for specific matchups, and I’m wondering, how should I play the Wolvy matchup?

In case it’s relevant, assists are Dark Hole and Bolts.

There is a matchup thread that goes extensively over the Wolverine matchup. However that team gets destroyed by Wolverine all the way through and I’d stick with your Taskmaster team since he can fight Wolvie better than others.

You need to play the matchup depending on the assists you have and they have. Avoid their assists at all costs. Don’t get tagged by drones, tatsu, plasma beam, etc or you’re going to have a bad time. That being said, cr.M and superjump ADD j.H is very good here. j.H in general is good here. Tag him with your assist, work on your movement, and avoid his assists. Also, be careful on mashing grab since a divekick will fuck you really bad for going for that.

Hey guys. I got randomed out of a tournament last night by a drunk guy playing Vergil/Wesker/Strider.

I need:

  1. a hug
  2. a tip on how to fight Vergil/Strider because that shit is retarded.

It’s not a great matchup, but if you stay patient and learn to block his mixups. You’ll be okay. Also, Gravimetric Pulse H is really great here. Put one out, hide in it, and confirm from it if they teleport in it.
Look at my match vs Winrich for ideas. STAY PATIENT and learn how to punish Vergil.

Thanks dude. Part of the problem was that he played as drunk as he was, so he’d do things like opening a match with Round Trip and I’d be like “seriously?” And that kept up for the whole set. Argh.

You gotta work on your start of the round options with Nova then. Nova is actually one of THE BEST at the start of the round. Not as good as Wolverine, Hulk, Taskmaster, Trish, but definitely up there. Just as good as Magneto IMO.
