North Carolina Thread LXVI

This thread has been like Ultimate NC Edition for a while, amazing.

I want to go to Javier’s. I’m also probably taking a Wednesday off soon so I can go to Matt’s on a Tuesday and not worry about time/rides lol.

Thank you so much, you have no idea what this means to me and the TH team in general…we have been trying hard to keep the fighting game scene growing in Raleigh and we are still going strong…thanks to all the support that all the players have given us and the amazing feedback that you all have provided…what we wanted has already been achieved…to have weekly local tourneys for everyone to come and level up. And you guys are right…we have only heard two people complaining about our tourneys and those people have come to our events only ONCE…so we completely disregard their thoughts simply because they dont event attend anyways so whats the point of stressing out over their negativism. But for what its worth we really appreciate the support and constructive criticism that everyone has given WNB thus making it one if not the only weekly legit tourneys in Raleigh. Thanks again for your kind thoughts they are greatly appreciated.

pauses game

well im glad ive been more than once lol

but seriously as an up and coming operation its NEVER wise to dismiss a player or potential future entrant at your events because they had a bad experience or may have expressed themselves in a way you dont like. if at all possible and if its worth it to you, why not try to reach out and find out what it is that made the experience negative for those parties? you never know, something simple could convert them and others they know. because one unsatisfied “customer” (for lack of a better term) really equals 5-10 by word of mouth. if you only take the feedback of those who do nothing but praise you then you eventually stop growing because you become exclusive to a certain group.

the aim is to become a growing community…not a club

thats like saying that the only people who matter are those who show up to play whats offered and everyone else is left out in the cold. do something to draw those other players in, make everyone feel welcome because every person who attends and pays that venue, player OR spectator is important.

i fully understand that some people are just plain unapproachable and have a preconceived idea of what youre doing and how they feel about it, but it could be worth a try.

just some suggestions from an old man

goes back into training mode

LOL Demo you complained about not having enough entrants in KOF and I disregarded that thought because that was something we didnt and will not have control of and is something that is not our fault…the KOF players didnt show and sadly thats why we didnt ran the tourney…we gave it another shot and we advertized it two weeks in advance and KOF still didnt have a full 8 man bracket…again I understand that the players have stuff to do I mean it is a Wednesday after all…but you stated “your staff could have entered the tournament and give the game some support” which was just plain out funny and dumb since those would have been FREE wins for the KOF players cuz DUH! we dont play the game XD LOL but no hate towards you bro since you actually made it to the KOF tourneys and you actually talked to people and pass the word around to help the KOF scene grow but unfortunately there werent enough people interested or that could make it to the tourneys. And yeah we will have KOF in the future once again once this SXT heat cools down. And NO! I am not trying to pick nor grind gears with you…you are actually someone that wants the KOF scene to grow and trust me I would like to have that too but as you can see there arent that many people that are as passionate about the game as you are…of if they are they cant make it to the tourneys on Wednesday

I woder just how much people actually want to “grow?” Everybody is still in their clique mode. I really would like to see a battle of “crews” pitting current players against some older ones to promote rue growth. I guess i’ll have to really try to learn some of these games so i can compete. I am still pretty salty about my experience (first and only) at WNB but maybe after some practice I might come back out on a SF or cross night to re-asses my grievances with the current scene in general. NC has a lot of great players that are spread out and I think there’s time for a gathering of those people again. I hope to see it happen… in the meantime… back to Mature training.

CORRECTION: I want the ENTIRE scene to grow. KoF is far from the only game I play, but I have no problem admitting that right now as a tournament fighter Tekken is dead and Soul Calibur V seems to be dead on arrival. you seem to think im all about ONE game, which is definitely not the case. im about the ENTIRE NC FIGHTING GAME COMMUNITY and will do almost anything asked of me to help things grow or move forward. I dont like the SF4 series and I dont play UMvC3 but I enjoy watching it alot, ive also been getting into SFxTK but I dont know how long that will last given the way the game has been developing. we shall see though.

also, when I said “your staff could have entered” it was the FIRST attempt (same night as the UNC/Duke game) and what I meant was why are there people bringing the game that they obviously bought…yet they dont play it? that made no sense to me. and for what reason…for fear of giving out free wins? so how else do you get exposed or interested in a game if you dont take lumps in it? you play, you win/lose, you share information, you grow. Jon didnt show up that week because he was asleep (tsk tsk Jon lol) and Darrell is a die hard UNC fan so he definitely wasnt interested in fighting games so I drove two hours (there and back) to get a half hour of casuals that I could have gotten free elsewhere. but I still paid my venue, hung out, talked, ate appetizers, watched the games, got hype and spread the word. two weeks later I was right back and I even paid extra entries from my own pocket just to make sure there was a “full” bracket and to expose the game to other players who were there watching. so for all intents and purposes im paying to practice, which is not a good look for me lol. you gotta take into account I drive just as far as the Fayetteville CREW and im just ONE guy who shoulders all the travel expenses alone.

from an organizer’s standpoint you have to understand that there isnt much to draw players in like myself who arent into the offered games. especially now with the ReSe ranbats being moved from Charlotte to Greensboro. yes thats an extra two hours drive for me but I know without a shadow of a doubt that when I get there and pay my venue it guarantees me that Tacticks will have a casuals setup or at least a monitor that I can set up on, so I will get a chance to get some form of competition in a tournament setting every week and hes offering a structured program thats rewarding players for not only performance but attendance.

TL;DR version

we are mincing words. I have nothing personal against you or what youre doing, in fact ive told you multiple times I commend you and your staff for what youre offering and the people youre offering it to, ive also seen genuinely good players come out of there (I cant say enough how impressed I am with Will) but dont discount or disregard the opinions and thoughts of the whole scene outside of the bubble. or worse yet ignore or buck against the larger scene.

feel free to respond but I feel like everything im saying is being misinterpreted so im probably not posting anything else on this topic after this post.

im officially going into old man recluse mode now

I’d listen to all complaints and take them seriously. A lot of people only come once because what they complained about wasn’t going to change. Not too many people will willingly get burnt twice. If I get burnt, and other people decide to go back for a second helping and the problem is fixed, then I’ll give them a second chance after that. But I won’t get screwed twice. Not that what was complained about was somehow TH screwing people, this is more of a broad example to prove a point.

It also kind of depends on the person. If two people feel the same way, but New Guy A goes “Man this place sucks, you people are bad at this” and New Guy B goes “The tourney started a bit slow, kind of a low turnout” then New Guy A can fuck off and stay the hell home. New Guy B though… even if I knew good and damn well nothing I was going to do would help the situation, I would try and do it anyway cause why the hell not, more word of mouth certainly can’t HURT anything even if it won’t help it either since people are gonna play what they wanna play.

Fact of the matter is, if the game doesn’t have “Capcom” on the box somewhere, it’s going to get shit on and/or ignored. There are more games than just Cashcom ones. Sucks that this state went from a 3D and non-cashcom 2D mecca to just another sheep state. Maybe these are just the ramblings of an old man who has lived with the Force for too long…

No no no…lets get something straight…someone (so that I dont get into another online argument) said something about WNB which I thought it was a little harsh to which I gave my input on the matter…then I agreed with what some nice people said about WNB which was to not listen to the “haters”…I didnt say Im disregarding the opinions and thoughts of the whole scene nor that I am ignoring the entire community…let me quote myself here:

“you guys are right…we have only heard two people complaining about our tourneys and those people have come to our events only ONCE…so we completely disregard their thoughts simply because they don’t event attend anyways so whats the point of stressing out over their negativism.”

So lets not put words in my mouth cuz I simply did not stated what you said. I just simply disregard negativism and take up on constructive criticism. By no means I am dismissing “hey guys you could run this like this and it would work better” or “advertize KOF 2 weeks in advance so that we can make time for it” cuz thats feedback that players gave us that helped us grow into better events hence Im not dismissing that…what I dismiss is “WNB sucks…” and “WNB = pop-monster-carnivals…” so lets not get mixed up about what we care and dont care to listen to.

Now with the whole KOF thing…I have a team of about 5 people who as a group we work together to bring these tourneys to the players…when we asked if people would be interested in KOF we got feedback that the community was interested and thus we decided to run it…we bought the game (3 of us in total with DLC) for the players that wanted us to run the tourney not for us to play it…we dont even like KOF (great game we just dont play it)…so why would we play or enter a tournament we dont like and have no interest in? You, nor me, nor other people can force a game to others that they dont want to play or are not interested in. Thats the only negative thing that I thought was just plain out illogical…“you are a TO so you should play the games you run because we dont have a full 8 man bracket…” No thats dumb…WE dont have to play the games we run, those games are for the PLAYERS that asked us to run the tourneys not for us TOs.

And the thing here is that when I replied about the two people that said two bad things about WNB I wasnt even talking about you Demo…LOL again I really appreciate the support and your drive to make the scene grow and I have nothing against you at all we already establish that.

We are running KOF still in the future just like I stated before…we are still growing into bringing better events for the local players in Raleigh and the nearby areas…so we are only getting bigger and of course we take into account the constructive feedback from everyone and I thank you for your input towards WNB.

EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I PLAY DE KOF

SMH…

WNB as an event has limited capacity. They only have 4 setups and limited amount of hours to run the games. It was started by a group of relatively close knit players, and they run the games that have the interest there. With only time available to run two tournaments, with all the other popular games out, it’s actually going pretty above and beyond to try to run KoF for us when no one in their core group of players is interested in the game.

WE failed as a community to show support for the game. And those of us that did, there just weren’t enough. I know it sucks being one of those guys that goes out of their way to support a smaller game (Justin from South Carolina driving out repeatedly to support less than 8 man SC5 brackets comes to mind), but that’s just how it is sometimes. If KoF ever gets ran again, there needs to be an effort from us to get everyone out. No booty calls that night. No narcaleptic naps. No excuses. And if we can’t make that happen, then we just have to accept that we’re sad life anime game status and deal with it. There’s no faulting WNB in this, because they did no wrong in the matter.

To put it into perspective… imagine running a tournament where we only had 2 game slots, and we were approached by some Tatsunoku players. Even though none of us wanted to run that game, to support the scene and gather interest / potential players, we decided to run it for them in one of the slots anyway. But, then no one shows up for it except a couple of guys. Then we decide to give it one more shot, and still, barely enough people show up for it, after the TVC players said there was lots of interest and people would show up. Would you want to keep running TVC after that?

Marvel Matches from yesterday, start at 6:20:00 for the BLOW UPS

Man, a lot of commentating hate for Marvel and SFxT and SF4 and anything that’s name comes up. And that’s just with me starting with Jons matches from 6:20:00-6:37:00. I’ve only seen Jon fight Launchpad and Aaron so far.

I will look into this. I haven’t had time to get to the vids yet. Thanks.

ive NEVER had the chance to use this but I FINALLY get to say it  im so excited

here we go

NO JON!!

Im going to go by the numbers here

  1. I understand this, limited time and limited space. But this goes back to what I was saying when this ALL began about asking the community for help. You can make a whole lot happen with a little (and they have) but as you grow you gotta stop being too proud to ask for help from the very community youre building. This point actually bridges right into

  2. Why do they only have 4 setups? Not because there arent people who are willing to contribute or provide the extra equipment needed. I know I would. Ive got a monitor and whatever system/games are needed. Ive posed this very question before and was told that they are good with the equipment they have. Basically I was told in not so many words “we got this”. Now think about the other tournaments that have been in the area, those being Elite Zone (Fayetteville), ReSe (Charlotte), GameFrog (Durham) and Lucky’s (Greensboro). Once of the MAIN things they always ask for is community support with setups and such because more setups means games run faster. If games run faster, more games can be run. If more games can be run (be it tournament or casuals), more people will attend. If more people attend thats a good thing…right? Now I understand its a restaurant and theres a small area alotted but even then it can be maximized in different ways like dead space and empty setups and such. If its a thing with Champp’s where they arent allowed to have more setups than whats there then I concede but I havent been told that. The other reason that those other TOs ask for equipment is because it guarantees that there will be the OPPORTUNITY for different games to be represented and played by those guys who drive out of their way to attend their events.

  3. Tyrell. THBasic_Complex. He plays. I played him at Elite Zone and at Champp’s. Theres interest there.

  4. I was there on time, every time. I paid venue and such the first attempt and didnt even get to play. The second attempt I even paid double entries. It roughly costs me $20 to drive up there, then $5 venue, then $5 to play. Then not to mention food costs by it being conveniently at a restaurant. So im already in the hole JUST to go play. Im not trying to beat you up or anything but I did beyond my part. I dont think I failed to show support.

  5. Virtua Fighter is small. Arcana Heart is small. the only thing that makes KoF or SCV “small” is the fact that there is no Capcom on the label.

  6. IF is the key word in that statement. The other part is that IF it does happen, its gonna be hard for me to be all enthusiastic and just jump right back into the fold, ignore ALL the things said here and be like “here, take my money”. You said it yourself, ive spent too long worrying about community, now I gotta worry about me and MY growth as a player. So im gonna be one of those guys thats gonna have to have effort exerted to get out, and I doubt anybody is gonna put out as much effort as I have before. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong though.

EDIT: Been watching the archives. GOOD SHIT DUDE!!! Also Jimmy was right…there was some angst. Just go ahead and hire me as all time commentator lol

1+2: These are kinda the same so I’ll get them both at the same time. Even if you wanted to add another setup or two, the only place they could put one more setup is the wall by where the bathroom is. That’s it. They have to have the other wall clear for the paying customers to get to the restrooms and then the rest is either registration table or already has TVs. I’d say if someone was desperate to run a tournament there they could bring their setup and use that wall, and run their tournament, but it’s not my tournament and it sounds like you wouldn’t want to do that anyway from your new attitude.

3: Ok that’s one guy that MIGHT enter. Still not enough for a full bracket and I don’t know if he still plays.

4: You definitely did your part on coming out. Not faulting you there, but I’m saying we as in SRK. And besides that, the night when me, you, Javier, and a few others came out, that still was barely BARELY a 8 man, with you buying someone in.

5: Maybe so, non Capcom games just don’t have the same level of hype behind them from the general public for some reason. I think KoF may take a lot of effort to get good at and generally is kind of foreign to new players. That’s not our fault but it’s not something we can really help either. We can try to spread the hype for the game somehow, but even then, that feels artificially injected. Even with Roski in gboro pretty much breathing the life into NGBC, that only lasted so long. You can’t force people to play a game.

6: Well if you don’t make any effort to come out, you’re not going to get better, and if you don’t get better, people aren’t going to make the effort to come to you and to try to get you out, because in the end, people want to play people they can improve from and learn something. You’re only shooting yourself in the foot by going hermit status I think. If you’re completely letting go of the idea of staying ahead of the game in KoF, that’s ok, but you’re going to get passed by the greater majority of serious players rather quickly. So just keep that in mind.

Thanks for the props though. Yesterday was a big beacon of hope for me and NC in general competing on national level.

Man…I fought Matt in SFxT tonight, and after a while I think I get a feel of how I’m going to play this game. But dude, at first I was wondering why he was doing so many team supers…and then I started looking at the clock. Just Akuma’s part alone takes 12 seconds, not counting the combo beforehand and the cinematic of the other character that starts it. Probably like a good quarter of the clock each time.

ASSSSSSSS hahaha.

Matt Frank is just an e-scrub, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Also, I like dat 13. I need to learn how to play matches now. And settle on a 3rd character.

lol the clock in SFxT is so fast too. I activated Pandora with like 5 seconds and it ran out during the animation for pandora activating. I bet you can do pandora and some of the supers take so long that the pandora will run out before it even finishes -_-

Hahahaha, that shit would be the hypest shit on the stream eva!! Dude dies before he get’s that last hit in, hahahahahah I would love to see that!
