So I got lazy last night and decided not to hide my set up. Well guess who walked into the closet and saw everything still there. That’s right, my mom. As most of you know, video games = the devil in my household. So of course I was awoken this morning by a highly upset black woman. Basically her prerogative is to get it out of the house or destroy it with a hammer. So I need a place to put it, since hiding it in my car is probably the worst idea ever (temperature being the biggest factor, and someone could potentially break in and steal it all). That is all.
You could always hide your mom in the car and then keep the games in the house.
Sooooooo, KoF! I think in high damage games, zoning is rarely favored over offensive play. Takes like 80 bajillion fireballs / uppercuts (which you really only get hit by because you ran into them) to kill someone, and then one combo from the offensive player makes up all that damage. In lower damage, games, zoning is more viable.
There are exceptions though, like when zoning can be turned into damage. But in KoF… uppercuts and fireballs are really inconsequential. I’ll let someone uppercut me all day. Who cares, you just did 5%. I’m about to do 100.
I’m guessing you didn’t watch much Athena from 2002.
Or Athena from 98.
Or Kensou from 98.
Or EX Yuri from 98 UM
Or EX Geese from 98UM.
Or Krauser from 98UM.
Or Billy from 2002.
Or Heidern from 2002UM.
Or Bao from 2002UM.
Or Jyazu from XI.
And I’m just talking about long-distance zoning. There’s also been plenty of good defensive monsters built around keeping you out with a wall of normals.
98 Daimon being the prime example of one of the best poking characters of all-time in ANY fighting game.
In America, yeah. Elsewhere, no. Not at all.
The ironic thing is that pure rushdown was ALSO better in older games too.
The only reason the game is “more offensive” is because of the skewed risk/reward on meter combos plus the fact that console KOF13 gives you a ton more meter for doing nothing.
Even in high-level play now you see most players getting big openings off impatient opponents who make a mistake OR hitconfirming off low Bs xx HD combo like 3rd Strike rather than past KOFs where it was much easier to pressure, mixup, cross-up or guard crush to create your openings.
KOF 98(UM) is high damage too. Zoning is still very good in that game. As was said, defense/offense were a lot more balanced and each playstyle had a lot more options.
Hey guys, just thought I’d post some information about a tournament coming up for ECU’s gaming club. Right now there aren’t many signed up but I think we’re expecting a few more people to join on the day of. If anyone is interested, feel free to show up. There are usually some casual setups on the side as well as the tournament itself. Probably one or two KOF, BB and 3S players who may want to play a bit during downtime. Right now the largest tournaments are for Starcraft and Brawl. Looking for more entrants for SSF4:AE and UMVC3. This is a little bit of a short notice as I wasn’t sure if anyone else from the club had posted this.
Place: Mendenhal Student Center (Social Rooms; downstairs)
Date: Saturday February 25, 2012
Time: 2:00pm - 11:30pm
Games: SSF4:AE, UMVC3, Starcraft 2, Brawl (singles and teams)
Here’s a link to the Facebook event page:

just curious, what are your parents actual justification for despising games so much? my new testament knowledge is a little rusty but i dont remem jesus talking about fightsticks.
You’re right, I didn’t. That’s because most of those characters were never really seen in the top of tournament brackets once those games developed fully. Of all of them, the only ones I see more than occasionally are Billy from 2002; Everyone else I’ve seen doing the dominating plays rushdown characters (Kyo, Iori, (O)Chris, (O)Yash, Kasumi (2002UM), etc.)
Right, but we live in America. As much as I’d love the ability to teleport to the land of moonrunes and mayonnaise sandwiches on command, we haven’t developed the technology to do so, so we’re stuck here, in this community, with these games. You can either complain about it, which does nothing good for you or anybody else, or you can have as much fun as possible with it.
More popular =/= more viable
Most KOF players are really really rushdown-oriented. That doesn’t mean defensive play isn’t still really good in 98/02.
And yes, those characters I listed are pretty damn good in those respective games.
Krauser in 98UM was the primary reason that 98FE was created.
EX Geese was on the SBO championship team.
Poongko was one of the best KOFXI players in the world and he used Jyazu (granted he was a lot more rushdown oriented than the lame style I played, but still).
Not necessarily.
If people REALLY wanted to learn KOF, there’s like a billion Chinese and Brazilians playing on GGPO at any given time.
Plus I heard some really good Latino players are coming to a tournament soon. A tournament called “Final Round”.
They feel that video games are a “spirit” and that I’m addicted to them. Since I’d rather play video games than go paint a house that I will never use again, or get any compensation out of. Literally this all happened around my senior year of high school. Idk, they say they want me to take on more responsibilities, but I don’t care to help them out when all they do is bad mouth me to my face.
Are you still in school? Do you have a job?
If I were in your situation (and 21 years old), I’d either start saving money in order to pay them rent in order to get them to shut up about what I’m doing with my spare time in their home, or move out.
To Me it just seemed alot easier to keep someone out in the older KOF Games. The actual Tactic of Keep~Away just seemed to work alittle better. Maybe its just Me, dunno. I know I like XIII WAAAAY more then Ive liked any other KOF Game d@ has come out in the last 3 or 4 Years. I like the fact that people are talking about it & playing it as well. Usually if it doesnt have Capcom on the front Cover, people tend not to fuck with it.
Zoning might not have been the most optimal option but it still worked in the older games it felt like.
I can’t speak for anything other than 02 but Athena was considered pretty ridiculous because of her ability to zone in that game and she was so solid. Although I agree with Matt in that in many Japanese vids I mostly only saw straight up rushdown play. Don’t really know which country was the king of KoF games back then though since I heard China and Mexico are definitely ones you didn’t wanna mess with when it came to KoF meaning i’m not sure what style ultimately is best.
Shiki went CRAZY on the boards like Blake has been. I must confess that My beloved KOF has generally been offensive but there are always exceptions to this rule. Jeff has had good success with defensive characters like Billy and Mai. I remember Arturo used to mention him when it came to KOf a lot. Even 13 has it’s defensive characters that can do well in my opinion like Mai. Overall it has to be a mixture of lame defense and everything to do with execution. Taking advantage of an opening is beyond important like most games today. It’s just something we have to deal with. I hope I can get some practice in today or tomorrow. I’ve got so much damn work to do it’s crazy. Darell i’m gonna holla at you today hopefully. I feel my game coming together and I look forward to testing it out.
Isn’t Athena supposed to be really good at lame out? I guess there’s an option.
I understand your point, and thus I understand WHY people (new and old) enjoy KOF 13. But a lot of old KOF heads don’t like the game and it’s probably going to end up dividing the Old KOF community.
But then again KOF 13 was supposed to be the game that would bring in new players into the series, and in that sense the game has been extremely successful.
2002UM is still around for those who enjoy it, regardless.
I play Billy…hes lame…see you guys tonight at WNB
He also sucks at the KoF13 system it seems.
Actually why do most of the lame characters not play KoF13 very well? They should have given them a way to use HD better.
Billy? He’s really good.
I dont think people understand my objective with Billy. I could really give a damn less about using HD because his uses for it are pretty bad. I use him primarily as a battery for my next character. He is also REALLY annoying if I make the right zoning choices. You cant jump for fear of the staff upper or EX Fire Wheel (which HURTS), you cant throw fireballs because I can choose to hop C it or use a bar to flame staff it, you cant roll because of cr.B or stand B strings. fwd+B goes COMPLETELY over low fireballs and the opening frames of it goes over normal fireballs. plus mid range hop C is an amazing tool. it says “stay your ass on the ground”.
I guess either I suck or I just see something different when I play.
He’s just fine and a really good character on point. There’s a reason why some of the best KoF players still roll with him in 13. I don’t know why you’d use HD with a point character anyway unless you were completely shitting on the person you’re playing and if that’s the case you shouldn’t have an issue even if they killed your point character. “Suck” and “KoF” are very interesting terms considering it’s not at the level of unbalance that many games have currently.
I’m not anyone amazing, but certainly I would say the tier list of characters could be twisted like this. 1. Overall Tier List, 2. A Tier List representing the best point characters, tier list for best mid and tier list for best anchors. That initial tier list that Bala and all them made pegged Athena as B- tier out of A+, A-, B+ and B- but I feel as a point character she’s a lot better than one of the “worst in the game”. Anything but that, not so much but on point she’s great.
“Lame” keepaway and zoning characters can work well as battery and point characters.
That’s because the game generally plays like KOF in Round 1, and then eventually somebody gets meter and KOF rules no longer apply.
