Using Drive is generally better than using stocks, because Drive cancel combos don’t lock your ability to build stock. This is part of why stuff like drunk Hwa or Iori command grab into the corner is so stupid; they have combos that build a ton of meter while still doing dumb damage, all because of Drive.
Generally it’s better not to use both Drive and stocks in the same combo unless it will KO the other guy. Again, it’s all situational and depends upon a lot of factors like which character you’re playing and where they are on your team, how much your other characters depend on having those resources available, etc.
100% offtopic, but Boone has weekly gatherings these days - Fridays, 5:00pm till 11 or whenever people have to leave. It’d be pretty cool if that could get added to the first post. Anyone who wants to know more can feel free to get in touch with me.
Not going to get into the whole SF4 v. MvC3 thing. To me its a pick your poison of would you rather deal with dive kicks/FADCs/vortexes or teleports/air throws/X-Factor. Me personally I’d rather deal with the later. But thats my preference.
Anyways, the real reason for this post is that I’m welcoming a new addition to my family this week, a new arcade stick, and my schedule is open to host something Friday night for those that are interested. Give me a holla if you’re interested.
Seems like my schedule is freeing up a bit now, so I might make it out to a few more things. I was also thinking of holding another tourney in the wolves den place at state again, since we finished super early like what 5pm or something(even with starting at like 1 something and some people being late), we shouldn’t need entree fees to keep the place open past 10. Probably going to schedule it sometime in march with
Main games: ($10)
AE2012
UMvC3
KOFXIII
SC V
Side games: ($5)
Blazblue
Melty
Gundam Extreme vs (2v2 game, have a partner lol)
So other then Rese and EZ what other tournies do I have to look out for, and am I missing any games that would actually get some play. Honestly we could probably have like 3-4 more side games for $5 and just not run them if <4 show up.
That was before option selects and what not got so fleshed out in SF4. That pretty much killed the game for me. Plus it just got stale after a while.
I’m not really sure why my opinion is important anyway though. People really should just play what they want and not listen to scrubs like me.
1+2) It’s a big difference. Course I don’t know BB like that so I can’t say for sure but say I do an ABC string with character X. Say that string is normally a tight guard string. Now say I’m fighting Hazama and he just randomly IBs the B, and slips his super in there. That’s changing how the move works in a sense. Or say you like using a certain normal to get frame advantage in a certain situation and they just randomly IB / just guard / whatever that move. I just don’t like it because it adds randomness, really.
Lets not get into cancelable DPs though. This is just about the two individual mechanics. DPs can be baited pretty easily and punished hard. Instant blocking and such just sort of happens. It’s not something you will always be thinking about.
It was just an idea. If you want to keep the function of the move the same, just make it so you hold the buttons for FRC and it just FRCs at the set point where it’s supposed to FRC.
They were just examples, maybe specific moves would have been better. iMCF with Yoshi in SC4/5 is a good example of really hard to do move that gets dumb when someone can do it regularly. Tech crouch 10 frame special mid move that crumple stuns on counter hit and leads to big combos. There’s not really a downside to that other than that it’s hard to do.
Well, if you’re winning, you probably want to play that game. I kept entering 4 for a bit even after I pretty much quit it because I was still placing top 3 every tournament. I hated the game but I was still playing it because it’s fun to win. I wasn’t really enjoying the game but I was enjoying beating people.
I find it a lot easier to get good at a game when I really like it / enjoy it though. Marvel, I got this far because I genuinely like the game. If you remember back in Vanilla when I was getting raped by Will and other people, I still liked the game and I still kept playing. It’s my enjoyment of the game that helped push me through matchups like Wolverine and Phoenix, where a lot of other people fell off. The only reason I win in Marvel is because I’ve put a lot of time into it. That’s really all you need to do to be good at any game. And, I’d imagine, being good at any game takes a lot of time. So you might as well put that time in something you enjoy, no?
As far as the Zero / Dante thing, not a lot of characters can stop that at match start. If you watch me fight someone that uses Magneto first though, I have to change it up since his st.H beats it out pretty cleanly. The match in Marvel actually starts before it says fight… that pre fight positioning is super important and I think a lot of people neglect that. It’s just a matter of doing what makes sense though. Why does every Guile player start every SF4 match by walking backwards? It makes the most sense.

WNB! I’m bringing the BFP crew there this week! (should be rolling 3-4 deep + other Greensboro players should be coming as well). I have BEEN wanting to attend a WNB to support and get some more XP.
Also, friendly reminder: MINDGAMES Tuesday Night Throwdown #3 @ The PourHouse TOMORROW! COME OUT AND ENJOY YOURSELVES!
so I went to play with some new guys this weekend, they will remain anonymous but I will say they post here. they CLAIMED they want to learn KoF and SCV. I decided to give them a chance so I packed my stuff and went to play with them. im not the best around here by any means but I was easily raping these guys, which WAS NOT FUN. but thats ot the real story. the problem I had is that the entire time I was there they didnt bother to ask ANY QUESTIONS and didnt bother to even pick up the humongous strategy guide I took with me.
I have to disagree here on IB’s being “random”. If a Hazama IB’s your B attack and Jayokus you then it wasn’t “random” he had to stop blocking to do the Jayoku and if you do a followup that is still a solid blockstring on instant block you are then hitting him into a combo. If you watch any high level japanese BB matches they instant block everything because they know the timing for all of their strings.
Instant blocks are there to allow the defender to change the flow of the game when the opponent does a predictable string. It forces the person on offense to not just go on autopilot or they will risk losing pressure to IB backdash or in the extreme case IB Jayoku.
Now if you are saying that IB -> Jayoku/other invincible move is too powerful I am not going to argue that one.
So, can anyone here recommend to me a good converter that I can use so I can use a PS2/PS3 controller on the 360? I’m not a stick player and seen a few online but with 50/50 reviews on it actually working I was wondering if the community had a recommendation or one they use and know works. I want to remember Brent having one but this was years ago.
The Blaze Controller Converter PRO works very well, but good luck finding one. Other than that, the xtokki converter from etokki is pretty good (if you don’t mind paying shipping from Korea, anyways…). Honestly, I need to get a converter too, because my stick uses the Astro City layout and the Madcatz hybrid layout just feels wrong to me.
I went with the Blaze Controller Converter Pro. Found it on Ebay for $20 with shipping and will take just as long as anywhere else. I liked the look of the etokki one but had a verified paypal account so it seemed a better option. Main selling point is I don’t need the wired 360 controller as well since I don’t have one and don’t want to mooch/ask around for one. Looked to be the best deal. Says it’ll be here anywhere between 2-5 weeks. I hope the earlier end of that but I’m in no rush I suppose. Thank you both for the quick responses.
