NEW game NEEDS different art direction? Maybe?

This

As somebody that for videogames like jap art way more than western… Japan should just get his shit together
They must find a way to keep the art jap-looking but at the same time keep be marketable worldwide

It’s the only way too survive without sell the anus, i see nothing good for SF if go full kamize with 2014 anime style… then flop and desperated Caplol turn it into MvC3 or another Dino may cry to blowjob western market (and still bomb, ask dino)

I’m glad with SFV they found a style that don’t betray the series spirit and the jap soul of the design, but is also marketable

ps: also i don’t believe anime style in 2014
Even GGxrd… very nice, shiny, polished… maybe too much. The original style was more aggressive, gritty and charismatic

Anime art just used to be more badass back in the day

IF SF will evergo full anime this is the way to do it

the irony is that will probably piss off good part of both audiences, the 2014 weabos that will not find theyr big eyes lolis, and the shitty tastes dudebros that will not buy cuz suspect is from japan, lol

So again, just be happy SFV end up something visually great with a good chance of not bomb

Well I dont really care for the “cell-shading” or graphics as much as i do for the actual art style, I would much prefer a Chun Li that looks like THIS

Than the Chun Li in SFIV/V, and they CAN do it, but for some reason they choose to go with a more realistic art style, similar to SFIV, which i think they need to change.

Or maybe their artists just aren’t talented enough to replicate something of such a high caliber of divine beauty, Oh well. Thank god for ASW.

The irony is that the picture you posted looks exactly like the look of Xrd that you criticise.

ps - anime and manga are diverse fields of art with as many bifurcating genres as you can count until the next time you try and then there’s more.

There’s anime and manga and then there’s the Western interpretation of anime and manga filtered through specific optics whether it be weeaboo-ism worship of non-self-aware homo-erotic dudebro opposition.

1- Lol, if you seen/remember the movie(if not get it, is great) it does’nt look like GGxrd, at all

2- of course, and dat SFmovie was an example of anime different from current average/ignorant perception of anime, but…

3- …but applied to games during last gen we have seen a lot of the two extremes: japan going full japan becoming niche(and play a kinda small role on consoles) to the point that even many western anime/manga lovers like me start to don’t find any more what they used to like, and a market that after a gen under 360 is becomed murricanized as fuck, often with a specific automatic dislike for japanese stuff

In this scenario you have to sell a must-million-seller japanese looking game.
I can’t blame them for taking a little bit the tekken route, given capcom’s expectations and money needed is the only way they have

Japan end up in a shitty situation and now they’re forced to adapt, but honestly as much i don’t like admit it they did’nt did much to avoid it

Whats “jap” looking?
Can you articulate what you are referring to? Cuz I have no idea what you mean.

Is not that hard
If you have a little bit of experience with videogames most of times is easy to see if a game is jap or not.
It’s not even about look anime or having extreme anime looking chara design

Is a combination that theyr productions tend to have in theyr art direction, even in games with kinda “realistic” look
Is about chara design, stylization, colors and lights choice, direction/camera, overall tone, animations, design themes… even the physics is different, lol
And more

“Art direction” is probably the word that more explain it all, is a whole set of visual factors that together give identity to the product
Japanese one tend to be recognizable as japanese, and my only wish about SF art aside look good is that they keep that identity in theyr work

From the little we have seen SFV seem understand that, and i appreciate it

My whole point is that in this shitty market situation (as jap stuff fan) where big part of the audience is western and often tend to don’t like “too japanese” stuff, they MUST find a way to create a visual design that can be sold worldwide without betray themselves and theyr fans.

They don’t need to copy western games, they should stop being naive and actually learn to understand what western peoples like about theyr products
They will never get the giant ignorant mass and do dat easy COD/GTA numbers caplol dream about, but still they can improve theyr current situation

Basically if sushi don’t sell anymore in the west, i want they to stay confident/competitive and find a way to prepare a sushi that can sell… not go full panic/retard and follow the first dbag that scream that they must replace sushi with an hamburger

But i suspect you already know that, so what’s the point of the question?

Harada just twitted this to say (one more time) that namco’s TKvsSF project is still alive

Not surprized about how much theyr sketch look like SFV Ryu

This thread is a constant source of amusement and pain.

The more I read, the more glad I am that Capcom isn’t pandering to its fan base. Some of you have 0 clue about art. It’s almost as bad as when people throw the word “engine” around and don’t even know what a game engine is.

Its still too early go really go there. I remember when SF4 pre-release pics and videos were released. The game was ulgy! We all know the end result was a lot better!

The game has a unique style with new models that are completely re-animated, running on a new graphics engine. The game looks new, and appears to play completely differently from SFIV. The jump is just as big as the jump between Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter III IMO. It is really strange to me that so many people are complaining about the art direction of this game, what were people expecting?

The game looks sick!!! No art style change needed what so ever. They just need time to polish the stages and textures etc. If someone can’t see the difference between SF5 and SF4 they need to sit closer to the tv.

Well, it’s not the same art style as SF4. It looks better graphically than SF4; I’m still not digging it. I was hoping for more of a departure from the source material (maybe some character/costume redesigns?). It feels like the series needs to be modernized and I’m not sure how you’d go about doing that or if that is even what the player base wants.

so far i’m liking it (except Ryu’s animations and his stance). they don’t look like pieces put together like SF4 models where the arms and legs looked really pinched where they meet the body.

The thing is, with the series being 3D is no more a problem, one character can (and will) have more costumes/designs

Have the classic as standard and the new costume as alt… or vice versa, does’nt change much
Only difference is that first will get artworks and related stuff becoming the “official”, but at the end of the day if you like an alt more you can chose it everytime and problem is over

One combo will give stronger iconic feeling to the title, the other a more fresher look… wich is better is just about tastes, but againg is just perception bullshit

Btw keep the iconic design as standard version is probably the smarter and safer way to go, so i agree with them (but tbh i was on iconic team anyway  )

The thing about this that I like the most of all is how Chun’s reeling/hit animation seems to match the attack much better.

Here’s the problem with any sort of drastic redesign.

See this?

That right there is Ryu. His design is so iconic that, even from just the colors at the correct vertical orientation, you can tell that it’s him.

His default design has become an iconic design. Show it to anyone who’s only recollection of Street Fighter is how popular it was back in the 90s, and they can tell right away who it is.

Changing his design risks alienating alot of people.

SNK did a great job with Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Capcom could take inspiration from that to alter the existing cast.

You could come up with an engaging new look for the existing cast of characters that reflects their current station in life, without completely alienating the fan base.

Heck, they altered the cast somewhat in the Alpha series (Ken / Chun) without incurring massive butt-wrath from nerds.

Yeah subtle changes can be done and I think would be welcomed. Character still will have trademark stuff and be easily recognizable but not be near the exact same. Alpha was a good example agreed.

I wish Capcom held onto her alpha outfit. I like it more than classic design.

I agree with what you said and would love a mostly all-new cast, like in SF3/Garou.

But you also have to remember that word traveled slower in the old days. Back then, even if something was unpopular, it didn’t get immediately splattered all over the web and social media. Butthurt fans are louder than ever in today’s world. Stuff that would have been fine just 15 years ago has the ability to become a big scandal today.
