NC Thread LXVIII

So who going to NEC?

AE has been really iffy as of late, sometimes not even getting run. UMVC3 is highly popular. My point is, the game is far from dead and still getting great turnouts when it’s run at WNB and had a great turnout at KDP too. Although I wouldn’t call it a “big game” by any means, it’s just one that does semi-decently in NC which is a feat in itself. I really hope AE picks up at WNB again though because it’s a game I enjoy and i’m not really super interested in Marvel. I would say for sure though Marvel overall has been the most consistently played game across NC as a whole so that’s why I think it’s best to go with that if you can find a team that you really enjoy, something I think is much harder in Marvel than in KoF.

AE’s fucking dead in Raleigh. Nobody wants to play it.

All the hype and money is in Marvel!

And KOF, we shall rebuild it…stronger.

Dis rite hur!

I plan on going out there.

Man sucks that I missed that, what was the turn out like?

People dont like losing. Thats all it boils down to. And its not just KoF…its also Tekken. Neither of these games are easy. Both of these games require a LARGE initial investment from the player to actually get anywhere and there will be a whole lot of losing involved before you feel like you break any ground. The majority of the scene cant get past this part. Players want that instant gratification, they want that feeling of accomplishment the game gives them by basically playing itself for them. Its all about skill gap and entry barriers. It also doesnt help that a NEW fighter is coming out virtually every 90 days it seems, so therefore players feel like if they CANT play X game then they CAN jump to Y game.

It’s not that hard to play more than one game, even if one (or more) of those games is relatively technical. Once you’ve practiced enough, all your combos are muscle memory. Hit conforming and defense (blocking, evasion, and smart usage of reversals) are universal skills, really.

PS: I hope Aquapazza does well at KDP (again). That game is awesome, way better than I would have expected before playing it.

Okay let me see if I can give my point of view here since we all are having a nice argument about why fighting game scenes are dying. As a tournament organizer I’ve come to understand the many issues as to why players are not consistent at either showing up at tourneys and sessions or picking up new games to play. Its simple really if you think about it, there are a lot of players yes but we all are spread out across the state thus making it hard for everyone to gather and have tourneys and sessions. Not only that but also the days in which tourneys are being held make it difficult for players to come out specially for those players who are in school or have jobs that arent flexible. Thankfully the TH crew that runs WNB is able to run weekly tourneys at the cost of making up that working day (Wednesday) during the weekend.

While work can be forgiving to some players and are able to take off work or be late the next day, other players dont have that same flexibility with school which is such a wild card because no one really knows what day or time their classes will be scheduled, so with summer ending and school starting we saw a drastic change in the amount of players that showed up to tourneys (specially those who compete in AE2012) not just here in Raleigh but in all the other cities, other TOs have actually asked me “are you guys having low turnouts or is it just us?” and all you got to do is just look at the results to find out. We know a lot of the players that have priorities who cant make it to the tourneys but there are quite a few that we know that are in town that simply just dont go out to support their local scene…to those players we say “what the fuck?”

Now about the scenes…the games arent dead by any means so AE2012, TTT2, and KOFXIII are very much alive (cant say the same for P4A cuz that game went down the hill super fast), but again, those scenes are alive in their own respective cities…sure AE2012 and UMVC3 are the “big two” games that most people play but even then the player base for those games is spread out across NC. WNB’s AE2012 competition came mainly from out of town players such as Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Durham which altogether with the Raleigh players (MX Mad, Xaiah, PimpMuffin, Basic_Complex) a good AE bracket was able to be done. Sadly school started and WNB doesnt get that outer city competition and so we have no AE2012 tourney when FNEX KBrad comes to play…only 2 people signed up for AE besides KBrad, Xaiah and myself (who had played for hours the night before) so there was no point in running it…I know…depressing.

So a lot of players (myself included) are pretty much left with no choice other than to play the game that everyone is playing in their city…Raleigh happens to be the UMVC3 city so here goes to learning that game…Im sure that if Raleigh was heavy on either KOFXIII, TTT2, or P4A I would most likely be playing that. Sure we have people that show up to play other games (which we encourage) and its good so that at least everyone has a good time while they are hanging out at WNB…so casuals in any game are being played at all times like TTT2, KOFXIII, VF5FS, and even P4A…but thats not enough to pull a good bracket for those games…it really sucks cuz I am an AE2012 player and we havent had an AE tourney in a while  and we all know that there is only so much time you can play with the same people and learn their tendencies and or your weaknesses and improve on them cuz after a while you crave to play with some other players and have that fresh competition.

We have made changes at WNB and we are also part of the SEED system (TH teamed up with BFP and KDP) that unifies cities by the rankings of their respective tournaments. We are looking at the games that are being played and that people want and we are setting specific days of each month so that players can make time for it and show up. KOFXIII has been established as the game that runs every second Wednesday of the month (today actually) and we are gonna try to have other games setup either in the same monthly or biweekly format. Also changes at the way we run tournaments have been made so that we take care of the matches that involve outer city players first in order for them to finish their tourney earlier and came make it home sooner. But even with all the work we put into organizing and trying to make a better experience for people it is the players that ulitimately make the tourneys happen. So hopefully during the school breaks or during the summer things will look better for TOs and for the FGC in general.

I don’t necessarily think that Fighting games are dying. I think that people are turning away from some games that they actually like to play but are scared to for whatever reason. WNB has been doing something special for the RDU community and glad to see that it is continuing to grow and gain recognition. In my previous posts I am semi-complaining because I am also guilty of running from a game due to something I don’t like (AE and UMvC3 are prime examples of this). It is just hard to take it when “your” game is dying a slow death. It’s something I just have to accept and move on with games. That’s why I posed the question in my first post. Demo seems to think Tekken is going through the same issue as the KOF scene here. I don’t want to have any more excuses. So I want to participate in these things instead of complaining lol. I hope to train in some AE and UMvC3. I’ll holla at OldManDoom sometime next week and see about learning some shit. Hell I can start asking here. Thanks for letting me rant. Peace.

Seems like a major is long overdue. Just a thought.

Working on it Sir…will take time but without giving too much info about it, monthly TH events will be held soon…very soon.

Let me see if I can put this as delicately as possible… no fuck that, I’m going in.

NC is a bitch-made state.

I don’t know if we’re fucking lazy or what, but I am so sick and fucking tired of picking up X game and having it die 2-3 weeks later. I pick up KOF, suck badly at it, but I tried, and people stopped playing entirely. Same shit for Persona, I saw numbers dwindle fast for that game so I could not justify the gas and money it cost me to go to WNB so I stopped playing. I picked up umvc3 for 3 months, despite terrible online and trying to make it out to as many of Jon’s sessions as I could only to see 2 people show up, and all the sessions completely stop dead so I have no way to improve other than lose 10 dollars and get very little casual time in at WNB. If I have any chance of getting better at a game, there needs to be constant practice going on. It was easier to do this in the arcade, even if you played scrubs, and I have heard of a session that goes down in Raleigh but since I don’t know the people very well and am shy/introveted/what have you and they don’t post on SRK and you have to be part of the “group” to even get in, I feel like I waste people and MY time scrubbing it up in front of you guys so I don’t bother asking if I can come out. I admit that particular issue is nobodys but my bitch-ass fault.

I go through this with Tekken also because for a solid FOUR FUCKING YEARS that I’ve been back after my “retirement” which everyone knows means I ran my ass to a game that I could play all the time, World of Warcraft, only to come back and be regulated to a shitty CRT in the corner of a fucking tournament and going two Lucky’s on two separate occasions where Tekken was flat out cancelled. Shit like this is really demoralizing to me and I often question what the hell I am doing with my time so I stop caring. I know Justin runs Tekken and so does Bryan, but apparently they would rather stick with their own little clique rather than be a part of the overall fighting game scene in NC and not interact or even acknowledge any other players making it harder on this deaf fucker to know when stuff is happening so to me it looks like NOTHING is happening! I think its great that Charlotte and KDP Fayeteville is having some success too but seriously, without more local practice so I have a better fighting chance of actually learning something and not just donate to a pot for free, I can’t justify my time and money right now due to personal issues which I am trying to fix.

I apologize if this offends anyone, this was not meant as a lash out to anyone PERSONALLY and it is just my feeling on this subject matter. I am just as guilty as anyone, if not more, at the decline of the state of Raleigh FGC. I apologize for not taking fighting games more seriously and when I take care of my own personal real life problems, I hope I can continue to play with you guys.

As someone who plays the more “poverty” games I understand the feeling of when your game is slowly dying out although it’s more to be expected with those games so it doesn’t hurt me as much as AE slowing down is. I really had wanted to get back into AE hardcore in these past 2 months. I think it’s possible Tekken is going through the same issues as KoF, although as of right now both games are doing decent tournament wise (but Tekken never got off the ground at WNB because nobody ever really showed). I think DeMo is right the players want the “instant grat” in games these days without putting in work. Shit I was losing hardcore in KoF for a solid like 2 months straight before getting anywhere, every session, tournament just getting stomped on although luckily I never managed to go 0-2 I still pretty much got owned in that game until I really started to learn more and more.

I would say there’s two future possibilities for the scene as a whole. It dwindles down again due to the oversaturation of the market and new mindsets of the communities or it moves forward continuing to become bigger and better.

You must be the support you wish to see for a game in the community.

And the reality of that sounds super shitty, but you shouldn’t count on someone else to get people interested in a game you’re playing.

Hey, is it true that lazy bastard solechris is going to NEC? He told me he is, but I don’t believe him. He won’t even go to a tournament in his backyard.

well either way time to me to step up and bite the bullet. gonna put in some work

The excuse “NC is too spread out” is not only old but untrue. Ive managed to play more matches with people from other cities in NC , some other states, than people who stay 10 minutes from me. Too many NC players are just lazy or are afraid of losing.

@RoboCurse: As far as Tekken goes in Raleigh Im completely new and Im still able to find out about sessions and tournaments. I keep asking Justin and Bryan about sessions and other players if they have heard anything. My sound like the scrub thing to do, but I keep putting myself out there so people know Im interested. And if anything is going down to let me know.

Plus Ive contacted you multiple times to play Tekken, P4A, and KOFXIII, each time to just get ignored. Not trying to come down on you but how are you going to be upset that you cant find people to play when when you are contacted by players ignore them? Youre diatancinf yourself from others but want to blame them for it.

Again dont take it the wrong way, but it does frustrate me to read stuff like that.

OK… This is gonna sound harsh but there really needs to be some rivalries to develop players. This buddy buddy shit is depressing. Its all good but it’s not making anyone better. Either no one understnds what it takes to get better or most of us just suck. This is what’s going to affect the community and mold it. Like all the hate that used to be directed toward Jon. He used it to get better and others used their hatred to try and stop what he’s doing. The shit is truly turning something negative to a positive. It is what used to happen all the time just a few years ago and what still happens in successful fighting game communities.

Yes SoleChris the best player in NC in KOF is going to NEC. Me, and Chris, Lu and few others are going up. People should go to Majors! Level up. Fuck not in KOF anything at all damn. This is terrible. Now if you will excuse me im going to go hide in my MySpace chat group. On another note I have posted numerous times I was running games. I have gave my number out to so many people. I dont know what else I can do? Im in school during WNB that the only reason I cant make it out, but do you think once a week in a 2 out of 3 is the best way to level up? I have no idea what anyones goals are at all. I just am so upset to see people from other states coming here on the sole purpose of free money. Are you serious? I want to play other games simply to stop that shit. Like come on guys do something. I wish i could get the quote that Marn said in are thread that one time. It went something like this. “NC sucks in everything but Third Strike.” How many years later and that shit still holds true. Oh we had like 3 people in top 16 in KOF at Final Round. If you have done something this doesn’t apply to you. If you havent then step that shit up!

Roski came over my house the other day and I busted his ass so bad it wasn’t funny. I mean blood all over the place it was terrible. You know what he said to me? Thank you! And that dude went home and is probably playing right now to come for me. I did that same thing to HOC, Roski, Frank, Jibbo, anyone who was in my way. That how it needs to be. We playing a competitive sport and we are good with getting 2nd place. Fuck out of here!
