NC LXI: Sweet Home Carolina

**RANKING BATTLES (RanBats) FOR SSF4 AE AND MVC3

Grand Prize:

Top 4 of SSF4 AE and MvC3/UMvC3 get Hotel for FinalRound (FR) 2012 paid for. If you have been before then you know that you do spend a lot of time in your room practicing and hanging out with friends.

Top 2 of each game get venue and entry (of game they got top 2 in) Fee paid. Total of 4 people.

*hotel would be from Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. (Thursday night pending on rates) and it will be a suite, the best they have and we can afford. Also, top player from the RanBat will get to share a bed if they want it.

Timeline:

Between now and March. Looks like 20 weeks or so depending on holidays and such.

Entry:

$5 or $10. We need to figure this out. Post what you think below. I am leaning towards $5 cause it is more affordable but $10 will give us a chance for EVO 2012 instead of 2013.

Ranking Battle Points:
For RanBats points as follows:

1st = 10pts. 2nd = 9pts. 3rd = 8pts. 4th = 7pts. 5th = 6pts.
6th = 5pts. 7th = 4pts. 8th= 3pts. 9th = 2pts. 10th = 1pt.

So top 10 of each RanBat earns points!

For ReSe Tournaments points are as follows:

Just being in the tournament earns you 5pts.

1st = 5pts. 2nd = 4pts. 3rd = 3pts 4th = 2pts. 5th = 1pts.

Only top 5 in each game at ReSe tourney get awarded points

We will do Tekken and MK if we have enough people for them but will have to re-think the prize distro a little but not much.

You don’t have to show up for every RanBat but the more you do the more points you get.

You can enter more than one game for experience and if you get top 2 then we will pay your way into the tournament for that game too but your hotel room for the second game would be given to the next person, ONLY if you have won a room already.

I will be running AE and Brian (schixo) will be running Marvel.

If we do $10 for ranbats then the money left over from FR will continue into the EVO 2012 Ranbats. If we only do $5 then it will be for EVO 2013 and ranbats will be a year long RanBat.

I will calculate the money needed to go and how many will be able to go. I will talk more about EVO ranbats after I see that FR ranbats are a success.

The mission for these ranbats is to level up and bring Charlotte together. By the time we go to FR we will have the exp needed to handle ourselves in a tournament environment. We will help each other grow and make Charlotte the place to be for competition.

These will be held on Wednesday nights at my house at 7:30pm. I have emptied out my garage and have room for 25 people and noise isn’t a problem ;). It is AC controlled and the door can be opened up for fresh air. I will need help with a setup or two but that won’t be a problem.

Ranbats will start on Wednesday Sept 14th and go until we have enough for FR Grand Prize. When we reach the amount needed the rest of the money will start over and be put aside for EVO 2012/13 (EVO 2012 depends on how much we spend for ranbats)

Please leave your input below.

PM me if you need my addy.

Post up if you want in to level up.**

Please go to http://www.facebook.com/groups/166718963377981/ to talk about it with others as this will be the main page of discussion. If you don’t have a FB account you can still get info here but will miss out on the general discussion.

Hey guys wanted to give you an update for ReSe.

I am getting the run around from the hotel. they are trying to charge me an extra 150 for some bullshit. I am dealing with it and will have an answer tomorrow. the date has been the victim here. I don’t know if it will be the 10th or 17th but it will def happen. Like I said I will know tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience guys. Is there anyone here with a preference for the 10th or 17th?

Thats my point. They took into consideration what the moves would be and look like. Whether the quality was achieved varies but they honestly tried to get the characters right I believe. I don’t think that would be called not having heart.

I understand what you’re saying. I see where you’re coming from. I wouldn’t exactly call this barebones or lacking heart though. DANTE HAS MORE MOVES THAN MY CREDIT SCORE (which is really good by the way). Not putting an exteme amount of effort into standing animations and L attacks, IMO, is completely passable considering the rest of the package that came in the form of Dante and his absurd amount of moves, plus you have to make time for the rest of the entire roster. As for the others, yeah I definitely don’t like some character animations compared to others. I always thought she-hulk looked and moved weird. But wouldn’t equate the quality of animation to the lack there of. Marvel is a fast paced 3D game meant to have a feel similar to its 2D predecessor. The animations for some moves like L attacks and going to have to be really fast. Both worlds of 2D and 3D animation have different rules but some overlapping rules as well. Faster paced games like Blazblue, Guilty Gear, and MvC3 all share something in common: a lot of crappy animation. But this is only because they have to make shortcuts to make the games as fast paced as they are. If you look at characters jab in these games its just usually their arms doing something while the rest of the sprite/model doesn’t budge. Putting too much animtion in them is a waste of time because they’ll be hard to see plus it will look the characters are spazzing out a little. The real secret to conveying fast moves especially moves that hit harder than a jab but are still relatively fast are the “key” frames used to emphasize the move. Games like 3S, Tekken, and SF4(to some extent, it too has qualities of a fast paced game due to how they wanted to convery certain moves or actions) are slow enough to put in more detail.

Some animations are bad yes, but when I look at the whole package I would say Capcom did good and cared.

I kind of like chun-li’s animation. So graceful… until she hits me with fierce. As for the characters in the background, they have to keep the poly count down. A lot of the stages are either huge, have a lot going on, or both. Gotta keep the in-game slowdowns to a minimum. Plus that will also affect online play as well.

I hope I’m not coming off as a guy who thinks you’re an idiot or something. I mean for all of this to be in the most respectful way possible. And yeah I’m not the biggest fan of a lot of SF4’s music. There are a few gems though that I like.

Koda Kumi is a slut though lol.

AKB48 master race.

Hey Darklight I tried texting you but your number isnt working

**NC State ****Arcana 3 Session **(Saturday)

@ Wolves’ Den

Talley Student Center
Raleigh, NC 27606

This is the actual address. lol. It’s off of Dan Allen Drive if familiar with the area. I’ll repost again when we have a concrete start time…

@Tactics - September 17th would be best for me if I can make it out there. They actually gave me that day off without me even asking lol

@Josiah - Sorry I couldn’t make it man, just had too much to do. Might finally be getting a car soon to call my own so I can actually get out to people’s gatherings without bugging people for rides.

@everyone - once I get done with my shift tomorrow at 7 pm I’ll be free till Friday afternoon. So if anyone wants come by Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday night just let me know. Hopefully we can set up some kind of session like we had here last time.

Really? Where in Talley? Wolves’ Den?

I see your point, but that’s not always true. I think super is a balanced game for what it is but it’s also boring, idiot friendly and doesn’t allow for creativity… so with that in mind it’s easy for me to hate it. It’s as if the game is resistant to forward thinking.

I still play it because it’s bearable and quite frank the tankly, there’s the potential for money in it. I also feel like I support the scene cause it does have some basic fighting game fundamentals involved in it that I can teach others.

I probably don’t fit under the “play it all the time” category cause I really just play sf4 in tournaments now. With this game, I’m not even motivated to go to training mode with the character I’m well known for.

I am!! FUCK!!

Yeah, naturally there are going to be parts of a game you like and dislike.

Maybe I’m offbase here, but when I say ‘hate’ and ‘dislike’. I’ve chosen those words because I mean them. To me hating something, isn’t just ‘not being really thrilled with it’. Disliking something isn’t ‘but for all these reasons Ill still do it’. What you guys are talking about isn’t hatred or dislike to me, it’s like some kind of feeble apathy. I can’t really relate. If I don’t like something, I stop subjecting myself to it (unless its work, sf doesn’t count). If something is tolerable or bearable, I don’t see how it’s also hated.I’m sure plenty of people can just kind of deal with playing super even if its not their favourite game. That’s hardly contentious.

Personally, I’m kind of indifferent about Super. I like watching good matches like anybody else I guess, I’ll play it if its there so I don’t have to sit out. I even enjoyed using Yang here and there because he’s a cool character-- but if these new games coming out are as decent as I hope they are, I’ll probably never go to a session again just for some AE. I imagine that unless someone openly says they enjoy/like super, most of you feel basically the same way I do.

if anyone is interested i am selling a ton of stuff, everything from Arcade parts to import fighting games to sticks. This is about 1/3 of what i am going to sell so if you are just curious of what you can collect after 30 years of gaming take a look.

Yeah it’s at Wolves’ Den.

Good games in Cary today, blazblue was had and I realized I’m still free in that game but it was fun. Sorry I had to book out so early.

I might come out to Wolves Den. Also down for Erik’s any of the listed days.

ALSO ALSO can host this week if people want me to. Is anyone trying to go to VA this weekend? I’d like to but like I said before, I’m not rolling up there alone.

Re: the recent discussion of games to play, I think “just play what you like” is valid in some regards but at the same time, it’s pointless to push it to a certain level in a game if you don’t have comp for it. For instance, I love MVC3, and I really enjoy MK. Unfortunately I feel like neither of them have much support around here, and until I travel more, my effort would be better put improving in other games. Seems like BB and Arcana have a good bit of support right now so my interest is up in those games. If I had to give a rule of thumb it’d be to look at the games that are being played and then go from there and pick the ones you like. If there are NO games you like then fuck it, be Brandino, but right now I think there’s something for everywhere. Location is kinda a factor to and who you have to play so that’s also an important decision.

Then there’s other cases, I dislike SF4 because of the lack of creativity in it and overall simple, defensive nature of the game, but I feel like playing it can help improve my spacing and whiff punishing, as well as micro-mind games as I like to think of them (all the split second OS / delayed CH setup / throw / block mixup shit going on). I don’t practice the game and when I enter tournaments I have no intention of winning in it, but it’s fun to see how far I can make it just on fundamentals and reads. I’ll always lose to the people that take it more in depth and study it, unless I ever get back into it seriously, but that’s just something I accept about the game and just use it for what it is. Most games have something to offer in terms of learning and improvement, so I think it’s worth it to dabble in a bit of everything. Just make sure you have your real focuses alongside that.

Hey Jon I know atleast two of us are willing to go with you if your still trying to go. I tried to get in contact with you on FB lol

Whats this about a VA tournament on the 24th ? Theres supposedly a group going ? Im down for that if I can get some more info.

I really feel what your saying here. Sadly I don’t share your opinion though. It may be true that Capcom is doing the what they THINK is best. Let me clarify, when I say heart, I don’t mean the heart of the shaders or the heart of the design team. I mean the heart of the actual hand drawn concepts and the character designer. Perhaps it just doesn’t translate into 3D well for me. Hey like I said I like 2D art and that’s my personal preference. If and when I do play games with 3D graphics why not play Tekken or VF who do this art style some justice.Instead of crappy DIMPS models that end up looking like glorified Naruto cell shaded characters from the Nintendo Game cube, 1 generation back? But hey, to each his own. I play Capcom games, but to be honest they have lost most of thier true creative artistic talent over the years. I see others talking about the problems with newer games gameplay, which is a whole nother problem all together. Well, I’m old school so I’m bitter, lol. These are all just my Opinions, I respect what you guys are saying. Just gonna shift my time and money to more traditional 2D games,cz thats what I enjoy.

Man…I hope you are joking.

I don’t like them for their music lol.

This. I’m not accustomed to agreeing with Jon, tho; What do I do next? Spike up my hair? Cut myself? I’m playing MVC3 again, so I guess that’s a start.

The challenge (and therefore, fun) of playing SSF4 to me is much more of a problem solving endeavor. Everyone knows how highly I view myself as a player (yes, too highly rather often, I know), so I aim to show my superiority as a fighting game player by beating shitty ones at their own game. It’s this arrogance-driven motivation that’s got me toying with the idea of actually learning another AH3 character. I am quite pleased that people are starting to show interest in BB tho, even if it’s only after exhausting all hope that 4/MVC3 will magically turn into something else.
