That’s not going to be a problem regardless since Jay still has his base and when he goes back to 1130 he will probably get his ratings title back again.
This made perfect sense.
The main reason celebs are on talk shows are to promote whatever they’re selling. It’s all about advertising for them. They don’t care whose doing the hosting really.
P.S. I say we should derail this thread into a “Bring Back Arsenio Hall”
It’s okay, I don’t expect everyone to. 30 minutes of the local news + a great show > Jay Leno’s one hour borefest. Especially for a prime-time spot.
Co-sign on this most def.

COCO IS A NOGO OH MY FATAL K.O.
You ever watch Parenthood? My all time favorite episode was when the little kid want to go to school as Buckwheat from The Little Rascals for Black History month. Wendell, AKA Faizon Love talked to him trying to explain to him why that was wrong. Since a lot of people are offended by Buckwheat. This is more or less what he said.
“Back in Africa, we used to be a race of kings and queens. Than the WHITE MAN came! Next thing you know Arsenio Hall gets cancelled!”
Thinking back to that still cracks me up!
I don’t really buy the lead-in theory myself. If I watch a show at 10, it doesn’t necessarily lock me into watching whatever follows, and it certainly does not even affect whether or not I watch what follows after that. I highly, highly doubt The Jay Leno Show hurt anything but the 11-o’ clock news in ratings via lead-in, since news is really the only type of show that I can see lead-in affecting significantly (as every news broadcast is more or less the same). But Leno hurting the local news was the problem in the first place. I also don’t buy that Leno booking guests hurts Conan’s show, since there are more than enough celebrities to go around, and it’s not like other, competing shows aren’t trying to book the hottest guests themselves.
I think it just comes to Conan’s humor not appealing as wide an audience as Jay’s.
oh i understand that. I just don’t really agree with it. Sure a great show helps but local news audiences have been dwindling while Jay’s ratings have been strong. Not having a strong lead in shouldn’t be a death sentence like howard stern makes it out to be if Jay can still have a big audience despite ratings for local news shrinking. it’s much more complicated than that and 7 months isn’t really a long time to figure it out.
its like this…
Conan: Man, this MadCatz Street Fighter 4 Fightstick is awesome! The medium punch is sort of busted but its alright, Im gonna get a Tournament Edition someday. Its gonna be awesome.:nunchuck:
Leno: :shy:Hey, Conan. Wanna play some SF4?
Conan::woot:* Do* I?
Leno::shy: Cool, but you should use this Tournament Edition Fightstick instead. Here, its yours. I know youve wanted one for a long time. Maybe this will help you with those FADCs. I will just use my custom stick that no one has ever seen before. My friend from NBC made it for me.
Conan: :mad:Damn, your Geif game is old. That spinning lariat shit is stupid, old, and boring to watch. But its so broken!
Leno::shy: I know. anyway, i gotta go own some noobs. Give me back my stick.
Conan:Wtf. i thought you gave me this shit.
Leno: :shy:Yea, but you’d probably do better with that stick that youre used to already. And you werent doing so well with it anyway.
Conan: But you already got a new stick from NBC… wtf.
Leno: :shy: Yea, its just not the same… its cool and all, but I like my tournament stick. I want it back now.
Conan:   :shake: w… t…f.
Conan: :annoy: Fuck this. I’m playing Tekken 6.
It’s not complicated at all, it’s all Leno’s fault, that backstabbing greedy chin!!!
If you listened to the whole show, you’ll notice that Howard didn’t say it was a death sentence. He actually said he thinks it’s a big thing, but not the only thing which was why he was torn (he felt like Conan should have still been able to beat it).
In any event, ratings for local news has been slipping in the prime-time slot? Are you sure about that? I thought that it’s only been slipping recently BECAUSE Leno’s show came on. Also, most prime-time news focuses on stories that have to do with crime/blood-guts. Why? This still entertains the public, and keeps them tuned in. Most of the “feel good” stories are not shown at night, but rather in the morning to “jump start your day.”
Plus this website seems to contradict your arguments.

Also, septimus, your preferences are not a logical argument. Sorry.
Oh holy shit Conan puts up his show for sale on Craigslist!!! http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/clt/1551463643.html
Man I love Conan! Fuck Big Chin Leno!!
its been posted twice already
Anyways, I got to finally meet Conan, glad I did while I had the chance.
So…I can’t tell who you’re trying to argue with: me? Monte?
All I’m saying is that I don’t buy that lead-in from the evening news affects anything, given that Jay Leno’s ratings have remained steady regardless whether his show is before or after the news. We all know that the affiliates’ news shows tanked because of him (which is what cause the problem in the first place), but the numbers show that the news’s ratings don’t affect that of the show following it.
Consider these points:
-Leno’s Tonight Show had a viewership of about 5 million viewers per night, when it was shown following the news. The Jay Leno Show had the same viewership of about 5 million viewers per night, despite its time slot before the news.
-Late Night with Conan O’Brien maintained a viewership of about 2 million per night, following Jay Leno’s Tonight Show. The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, with a different time slot, following the news, maintained the same amount of viewers, nightly.
This all shows that neither the news nor the show’s name affects viewership nearly as much as a show’s host does. And, given this inference, Conan had 17 yearsand not just seven monthsto build a large audience, which he failed to do.
The numbers get even more damning for Conan when you consider that the ratings for his and Jay’s shows for the 18-49 demographic are roughly the same (with Jay’s being slightly higher). This tells me that Conan does not captivate other demographics nearly as well as Jay does, and if I were an NBC executive, it would be pretty clear to me that Jay is the way to go.
Yeah but Conan’s show was always playing 2nd to Leno. Conan had lower profile celebs (in contrast to Tonight show where each celeb had something current in the media somehow) and his show was less accessible than Leno’s. It was pretty easy for most people to catch Leno’s show but Conan’s came on too late.
This was already announced last night on his show. What surprises me is that it’s still up.
Sorry, the quote thing didn’t work. I meant the bulk (1st paragraph) of it to be directed at Monte.
Tonight Show with Jay had 5 million viewers. Guess what a show like Law and Order gets (it’s lead-in)? Twice that much, usually more than 10 million viewers a show. It’s one thing to say that lead-in’s aren’t the reason this happened. But you can’t compare a lead-in that nets 5 million viewers to one that nets over 10 million viewers. Furthermore, the fact that the viewers remained the same is actually significantly in favor of the idea that lead-in’s reflect how many viewers the next show will have. Jay Leno had the same amount of viewers and again, the same amount of viewers stayed tuned in for Conan.
Your points did a good job of providing my case for me though, thanks.
