Anybody think NBC will let howard stern go on conans show before he quits?
The argument of a lead in made sense to me when both Rosie and Howard Stern explained it. Most people watch the news these days rather than reading newspaper, so people will view the news on a channel they enjoy watching prime time television. If 15 million people watches Law and Order on NBC and 5 million watches Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, more than likely there will be more people watching the news on NBC than ABC. Then, that trickles down to the late night line up. This is what I understand from Rosie and Howard, but there could be some misleading facts.
Snorlax your only looking at whats happening now.
Go back in time 5/6 years when jay and conan are told that jay would leave the show (assuming he should retire) and give the show to conan - it was that simple. At that time prime time not making a profit was never the issue.
Time skip now. Jay suppose to step down and leave, but hes not letting go. He said that if he doesnt get a show he complete with NBC. So his intent has aways been getting his show back. As it so happens, we get news that prime time is not profitable so they shove jay at 10pm kill 2 birds with 1 stone. If you think about it, had prime time not been an issue, he still would gotten his way at 10pm.
Its not about money with Leno, hes got $800M worth - hes selfish and wants to leave with King of late night title.
Hey, guys? Just because you don’t like Leno and Jimmy Kimmel said it to him doesn’t make the "we’ve got mouths to feed’ argument any less ridiculous and insulting when made in reference to fucking millionaires. Just saying.
Yeah having Farrakhan on his show did him in. At least Arsenio stood up for himself.
He was fun to watch. “Things that make you go HMMM.”
Never liked Johnny Carson’s show (was pretty young at the time, Carson didn’t appeal to young people at all) so watching Arsenio was a no-brainer for me.
But… Spreewell gotta feed his family too!
I honestly can’t hate on Leno. He never wanted to leave in the first place. I understand people saying stuff about him having enough money and he should be satisfied, but in the end that’s his decision to make. Leno is looking out for Leno, and that’s not the same as backstabbing Conan.
Cant say I was surprised. Conans next stop, FOX.
True. But I don’t imagine the whole passing the Tonight Show was legit.
Probably alot of behind the scenes negotiations for both parties. Lets wait 4/5 years and then take Conan down. If it is the case, Leno is a weasel. On the other side, we don’t know what NBC said to both parties. Or, we don’t know if Conan strong armed his way into the TNS by threatening to leave for more money and push Leno out. Either way, the past is the past. The result is that Conan won the first fight 4/5 years ago to stay with NBC and take the TNS. It was Conan’s dream to host the TNS.
NBC had rating and advertising issues years ahead of this debacle. Conan and Leno would always joke about their late night ratings vs prime time. Look at the recent Comcast take over. Conan had pleny of spoofs about the take over because of ratings The problem is that NBC tried to fix part of the problem with Leno and ir failed.
Maybe its more like Farve = Leno complex.
Over all, I feel that NBC is playing both. OMG, NBC, WTF!!! LOL
^
Letterman’s spoof on the Vatican is classic. LOL
Out of curiosity, why WASN’T Conan’s show pulling in decent ratings, anyway? Isn’t that one of the fundamental issues here, in that if Conan was bringing in good numbers then we wouldn’t have any problems?
The big complaints are coming from the news networks that Jays not pulling in rating like the dramas did.
Oh, my bad, mis-understood things.
So LENO wasn’t bringing in ratings in his new show. This fucked up the lead-in for local news casts. The local news broadcasts demanded NBC change shit. And THAT’S how we got to where we are. Is that accurate?
More like Leno’s numbers were the same as they were on The Tonight Show, but lower than what the normal 10pm lineup was getting. Affiliates claimed to be losing ratings on their 11pm news and losing money, and wanted a change. NBC presses red button, television goes KA-BOOM!
I believe it is the over kill of variety TV shows that is killing Conan’s ratings. NBC should have never decided to cut spending and place yet another talk show in a span of 4 hrs. Just overkill. Leno’s skits and electric car didn’t help much either.
Are you guys serious? Do you really think Leno would ask Kimmel to be on his show without knowing how that sketch would play out? Look at the questions he asked Kimmel; they were clearly questions meant for Kimmel to answer that way. Do you think it’s coincidence that the ratings of every late night talk show has gone up since this debacle started? Come on. Stop seeing just what you want to see and take a more objective approach. Conan’s Tonight Show took a 50% dip in ratings from Leno’s before the Jay Leno Show even started, and those ratings continued to decline for months. Seems to me like some of Leno’s old viewers stuck around for a bit to watch Conan, decided they didn’t like what they were seeing, and then stopped watching Tonight.
And let’s get real about Leno just leaving television all together or him not being accommodating to Conan. If you were doing a job you loved, and your bosses told you to hand off your position to someone else but still stay with the company, would you just bounce? It seems like Conan is being pretty damn unaccommodating, too, since he refuses to air his show half an hour later (and in that scenario, Leno would be cutting half an hour off his own show for Conan).
At first I thought Conan was overreacting about moving a half-hour later but I don’t think he really needs to be any more accomodating. He stated he passed off a lot more lucrative opportunities simply b/c he wanted to inherit the tonight show. I think it’s obvious from stuff he said that the show meant a lot more to him on personal level and that if the show was to be pushed back, it wouldn’t be the same show he dreamed of hosting. IMO, I really don’t think Conan sould bend over on this one. Especially if he was only given 7 months to host something he’s been wanting for for quite some time.
Now I’m not really into the leno bashing bandwagon, nor do I believe Leno intentionally sabotaged Conan. But cutting a half-hour of his show that’s failing on primetime so he can move up to his comfy 11:35 slot doesn’t seem like a generous accomodation to Conan. I don’t see Leno losing much from making this deal.
Of course Conan is unaccommodating. The show is called The Tonight Show but it might as well be called Late Night w/ Conan O’Brien. He’s always playing 2nd to Leno you know what I’m sayin? It’s kinda like the bit on King of Queens where Doug wants Zone 1 but the new guy got Zone 1 because he looks better. So the boss offered to switch Zone 1 with Zone 12 except that it was in name only.
I wonder if after Jay gets the Tonight Show back if there will be a backlash, like celebrities refusing to appear on his show. It’s not like you really need to twist someone’s arm to not appear on the least watched network.
it’s time to get paid, co-co.
