My thoughts on Gief SSF4

in 2 weeks of super i have played a total on zero guiles so no comment on that but i hated that guy in sf4 so im sur eill still hate him

as i play more with gief i have noticed that u have to be much smarter with gief now with his nerfed jump and a lack of keeping them close to u without em jumping away for free

to be honest i have found myself happy whether i win or lose with gief because now i know if i won vs a compentent player its cuz i outsmarted him or played footsies better or if i lost it was usually because he outpoked me/played better

i just feel better beating a good player and less shitty losing to a good player

anyways my opinions on giefs top 10 hardest matchups are as goes…

in no particular order…

guile, seth, juri, akuma, sagat, rose, blanka, chun li, and i cant really think of 2 others other than ryu and cody but i dont think theyre hard its about even on both of those

I agree with 2ton’s list these are fights vs strong characters from regular SF4 that are buffed now but the list is not set in stone. I haven’t seen much good from most of the new characters, we found out yesterday you can block all of guy’s elbow attacks crouching and his f+mp overhead you can spd him after it hits you, the 3S characters are beta versions of complete characters, adon spd everything on block and some stuff on hit. At least Cody and Juri are good though. Also I would believe someone if they told me that cammy is hard to fight but I haven’t met a cammy player that knows how to take advantage of zangief.

A good Cammy pokes you to death with that inverted kick of damaging righteousness…

In my opinion, Gief’s bad match ups are (in order):

  1. Seth
  2. Sagat
  3. Guile
  4. Akuma
  5. Honda (his new ultra is a great new defensive wake up tool against Gief considering jumping is usually out of the question…)
  6. Blanka

Maybe some tough 5-5s
7. Chun
8. Dee Jay
9. T-Hawk

There might be a couple more even match ups, But all of the rest of the match ups seem to tilt in Giefs favor.

Hey fellow Giefs. I think Sim might also end be being a nasty match up. It was 5/5 before and I am pretty sure he got nothing but buffs. Also Giefs nerfed Stam/damg means he probably can’t take as many hits from Sim to get in anymore.

i can’t believe you put guile up there. i mean, it’s a tough match but no where near as tough as akuma. that’s your personally opinion but i would say that

1.seth no one really plays seth but when you do fight a solid seth that shit is terribad
2.sagat
3.akuma
4.blanka people say this match up is not that bad, but a good blanka won’t blanka ball like that, especially if they i know you can punish them. This is a long long match .

but i do think these are also tough matches,

1.Guile
2. dee jay
3. el fuerte, once he knocks you down it’s almost over.
4. chun

i do think the other matches that you listed are tough but not bad

question for yall gief mains

out of those matchups would u put any of them in the 7-3 8-2 category? or all of them mostly 5-5s 6-4 not in his favor?

Forgot about Sim. Proabably a 6-4 for sim.

Seth got easer, because PPP owns his jumping fierce and OS against his teleport is now useful. I can see this being a tough 6-4. Sagat got a little easier, because his damage nerfs are a decent amount more than Gief and Gief’s footsies are a little better (anyone know why the new frame data doesn’t show this???). Blanka is about the same, maybe a tad tougher due to damage health nerfs.

El Fuerte’s mix ups are pretty unsafe against Gief (block -> SPD, dash -> SPD, and Focus attack -> SPD with any right guess or just EX GH to avoid most of his mix ups and score a knockdown.) so I would put that at a 6-4 in Gief’s favor.

Guile is tough, because getting in takes half a life bar now (used to take a quarter, because his priority and damage ratios compared to Gief were not very good) and one right guess will get him out and you will probably never get in again and lose to chip sonic booms in a timed win.

So how did Capcom help with Geif’s bad matchups again? If anything they feel worse.

Stupid jump arc… crappy AA lariat…nerfed counter headbutt, nerfed damage on normals and combos…nerfed health… Crappy Ultra II range…always wiffing… and the ultimate dumbest thing to change… 1 frame c.short links???

Are they serious? Sounds like Capcom didn’t want to improve the seth matchup at all and wanted to make it worse.

If they want to make geif so crappy and make him a “traditional” grappler and lack poking and combo potential why not give him the air grab, give a better running grab, and give him the crouch chest squeeze and the forward RH hop…

Here’s hoping if they add Hugo he will have decent combo/enders juggle grabs and AA grabs… i dont care if grabs are a 3 frame start up…as long as they are fun to play and not dumbed dumb to traditional grapplers…

Just a real pain playing geif and people constantly jumping and the only thing i used to keep people grounded was the c.short and now it’s pointless 1 frame link…

hmm, i would say that 8-2 is pushing it but i would say that seth is 7-3 and sagat is 6-4 now. most of gief’s match ups depends on the gief player. when ever i am in a endless battle watching ifc zangief go out it… he makes it seems like he has no bad match ups but it’s just he’s just a high level player and he’s smart as fuck adjusting to the person’s skill . But for the most part there is no gief like him, or close to him on xbox live. He just dominates people how gief is suppose to.

@ Clutch Hugs

Didn’t you remember that he has got a buff… fuck that he got buffS. His stamina is higher now, and his new ultra is godly for an AA. also with giefs damage nerfs, i mean, it use to be land a headbutt then try and knock him down and spd then done he’s finished. Now, hp spd does 230 and has decent reach, 200 for mp and 200 for lp so, that’s good for him with his low health and with gief’s lower health everything is working for him and his favor that’s why i think that the match up actual got worst. i still think it’s a 7-3 but it’s just worst overall. what do you think considering everything that he got?

It may be too early to tell, but the Dhalsim match definitely seems like it has potential to be bad. Because of the change to lariat’s hitbox, it seems a little harder to catch Sim’s limbs now.

When Sim used to jump, and you think you have him figured out and feel comfortable throwing out a lariat or headbutt in anticipation of a j.HP, whiffing or mistiming would cost you a poke, and usually not much more. Try that now, and if you mess up, you’re eating Shangri-La. So now we have to be a little more wary of airborne Sim.

What seems to fuck me the most in this matchup now is Gief’s jumping arc and hitbox. Getting in on Sim is a little more tedious but still manageable. And one of the things that made Gief so dangerous once he got close was the empty jump. Dhalsim’s st.MK is a badass AA, but against Gief,it had a 50/50 guess attached to it. If Gief pressed a button, knee to the grill. If he empty jumps, free SPD/Ultra. Well, st.MK is still badass but that 50/50 is gone, meaning that even if you do get in on Sim, you still have to work hard as hell just to do damage. And the damage ain’t that great. Get thrown or let Sim get a lucky teleport and you don’t get another chance to get in.

Maybe things will change, but that’s what the matchup is like at the moment, at least for me.

Theres this texas cammmy that i play, he’s the best cammy in texas his name is ca teknique on xbox live. The guy is nasty and au lord is the best US cammy, so you can try him too on xbox live. A good cammy player is no fucking push over.

gief is garbage, i rather play sf4 with gief who had 2 bad matchups sagat and seth than SSF4 ryu, guile, chun li, honda, dhalsim, gouken, balrog all became harder matchups

Seth used to land old ultra for free anyway and the new one is not for sure. Seth’s lack of teleport Godliness and abusable jumping FP will help the match up more than the damage/health gaps that have been made a little closer. Also, Seth got more damage nerfs than buffs as well.

His jump FP does 60 instead of 90 and his EX SRK does 150 instead of 190. Those are two moves that raped Gief that got huge nerfs.

@CLUTCH HUGS
the same happened to gief so… also gief’s health got nerfed so, do you think it evens’ out or do you think it weighs more in gief’s favor?

Lariat change doesn’t matter to Sim. Both lariats still hit like they used to as they started up, and in both 4 and Super the only time you could hit a limb was randomly on lariat’s startup. No reasonable Sim was gonna get hit by lariat after he already sees lariat starting. Sim can punish lariat on reaction in both games.

I think Sim beats Gief now. Sim does MORE damage, he does MORE stun, and Gief does and can take less of both. Sim’s shangrila is awesome as an instant air antiair to catch Gief’s jump recovery, to punish a blocked green hand, and to punish lariat. Ex yoga fire now goes full screen. By contrast, Gief is only worse, he received no important buffs at all (U2 is useless).

Gief’s damage nerfs didn’t affect most of his primary tools for hurting Seth. Lariat and jumping normals/headbutt.

Here is Gief’s U2 hitbox along with hit box data for all of Gief’s moves.
