I’ve Tried Using Zangief Man I Really have but it just seems like T.Hawk has something that just draws me towards him and away from gief…
and this coming from a major zangief player in SF4
juri is another counterpick for gief…god that woman has pokes for days against gief…thankfully she bleeds so once u get a knockdown do as much damage as u can and turtle it out
Tell me about it. My c.lp is getting beat by her sweep. wtf??? I have to treat this match like Cammy and turtle it out seems…
just played a really good sagat and it felt almost exactly the same. if it was 8-2 in vanilla it’s like 7.5-2.5 now. ridiculous. the new jump is just ass and feels like ur playing a laggy match everytime u jump.
It’s not as bad for sure…
yeah it’s better no doubt but if ur playing an elite sagat who knows what he’s doing it’s just as frustrating.
I’m not complaining, I play to have fun, that’s what is most important, and getting the guy with moves that are other than grabs and lariats are much more satisfying with Gief.
Plus I’m maining Ibuki now
well yeah, zangief has about the same damage as ken and ryu… doesnt really make sense to me…
really?! 0_o
After some more pt…the jump is annoying as is the c.lk, but all in all its still Gief so I’m not sweating it too much. The timing on c.lk is worse, but his other comboes seem easier (or maybe I just got better shrug)

Yeah, the new jump is really annoying in that matchup. Also I had a conversation with Renegade yesterday, and he pointed out that Sagat’s u2 is super good against Gief as well. Better not get hit by an ex tiger shot grounded or a regular tiger shot while airborne, or else you’re gonna get juggled with u2 even from fullscreen. And antiair trade to u2 works more often than to u1. My Sagat opponents haven’t figured this out yet, but even without it, the match feels like a similar level of difficulty as before even though it’s fought a bit differently. Sure, he does less damage and has less life, but so does Zangief. Gief didn’t get any new tools to deal with Sagat’s bs, and aside from antiair trade to u1 in most situations, Sagat didn’t lose any of his.
Sagat match hasn’t changed imho. Gief’s U2 is only a good option if the Sagat wants to toss out a TU or maybe a TK for AA purposes. But any good Sagat stays nice and grounded against Gief. They “nerfed” both characters equally, which kept the match in-line with what it was before. Gief needed all the extra damage and health for the match before, and that’s been stripped away.
Guile was barely a 5/5 match before. I always felt Guile had a slight edge, but Gief’s damage output is what made the difference. Now Gief is hosed. c.lk at 4 frames now…it’s tough to get out the solid low peck against Guile’s improved footsies. Maybe the “improved” RBG has hidden potential in this match somewheres?
I haven’t had any real success on Guile, the strats of before still work, but its much much ‘tighter’ and yeah the Gief nerfs really through it off.
- :bluu:
Yeah I definitely think that Guile beats Gief now. I agree, Gief’s only reason for not losing that match in 4 was the huge difference in damage output and intake. Now that that difference is lessened and that Guile has received significant improvements to boot, I think it’s definitely a win for Guile.
I feel the same way about a bunch of characters so far. Abel, Balrog, Cammy, Chun, Claw, Fuerte, Guile, Honda, and Ken have all either mostly evened up their Gief matchup or now outright win it, some largely because of the nerfs to Gief and others because of the nerfs to Gief and their own improvements. And I think he still loses to Sagat, Seth, and Blanka. How he does against the new characters is totally up in the air. Remember that Gief was thought to have owned most characters in console 4 at some point, and yet in the end he owned only a couple. It’s difficult to know right now how the Super characters will end up faring against him.
It’s not like I think Gief is a bad character now, it’s just that imo he isn’t anywhere near the high tier ranking he had in 4.
Aside from the lariat nerf, I think they went a little too far in toning down Gief. All they had to do was tone down lariat as they did, and along with the general damage reduction, Gief would no longer have been dominating at the casual level (which I think is what Capcom was trying to correct).
I don’t have a problem with his nerfs per se. It seems like their intent may have been to make Zangief a smarter character, less prone to bs and less able to win by guessing right 2-3 times. Whatever, that’s not necessarily an issue. What IS an issue in my opinion, though, is that they didn’t give him any significant buffs to make up for his nerfs even though he was already not among the 5 or so best characters. Balrog was already better than Gief in 4, and yet he got no nerfs.
Rumors that Gief’s normals are faster or safer are false, as are the rumors that his dashes are faster, that his focus attack is better, etc. The only changes to his normals are that they do less damage. If they had given him those buffs, he might have become a smarter character without becoming a worse one. Instead, he’s simply worse.
He’s not as good hands down empty jump then spd is not really a option anymore because of the huge hitbox in the air. Ultra 2 really fun but people catch on quick in high level play. He is still tourney viable if you just want to beat the non elite players. But your not going to beat a floe or someone of that level with the new gief. I learned this the hard way at a major this weekend. But I did still manage to get 9th out of 230 people so it’s not like he sucks now.
My biggest gripe is being unable to even do the c.lk’s string properly ON HIT. Why would I risk stringing a 1-frame link 3 times for about 200 damage?
are far as his normals go it seams like his st. mk is safer, can anyone confirm?
I’d absolutely love to hear what you have to say about about SUPER Guile… vs the Giefmeister of course.
