Like I said in the other thread, T6 outdid SF4’s first day sales in Japan. I think this game should sell well on packaging alone…with customization, scenario mode, shiny graphics, angsty bishonen everywhere, sleek cutscenes (as stupid as some of them are), and wow so many characters, blah, blah…crappy online aside.
But, we’ll see how things work out in the long run. SF4 is still selling well eight months later, even with the news of SSF4 coming…PS3 version was #91 of all videos games on amazon, last I checked (the price drop helps). Tekken PS3 is #48.
Two platinum fighting games in one year would be great.
P.S. I didn’t hear a thing about any Gamestop tourneys.
Yea i showed up to a gamestop real close to my house that was on the list. They had no idea there was even a tourny for T6 i showed them the list and that they were on it and that told me that don’t have shit set up for it or any of the prizes. I was kinda pissed
yeah GS sort of sprung this up on us at the last second by about the end of last week they were like ‘OH…by the way we are doing a T6 tournament’. I also swore that the email they sent us said they were going to do it 4 tier style like SF4 but no ends up only going to one round. We had 14 people show up to ours and it came down to 2 decent Asuka’s (one of them being Warna Brother who hadn’t actually played T6 but palyed T5). If they’re planning on doing a SSF4 tournament I hope they give us a bit more notice this time.
The nearest Gamestop in this location had (17-20) people sign up, but only (4) people were present to play. Three males and one female played; the female was by far the best. She ended up in the final round using Raven and executed some crazy combos.
I called most of the Houston Gamestops, they told me none was going on. I found out later that one was going on, about two hours after it happened from a friend. Such bullshit, I knew there was more than a few reasons that I hate going to Lamestop.
Actually a big part of GS employee’s jobs depend on how many pre-orders they get. Which I don’t understand. I had a friend who was let go from GS and my cousin was fired from Game Crazy because neither of them could get the “quota” of pre-orders a week or some shit.
Yeah that’s just the way business is. I’m sure their quota is reflected on some crazy old standards from more than a decade ago when stores were the only places to buy your games from. They’re just looking for a business to be run and money to fly in because of it. I’ve seen a lot of the Game Crazy stores in my area close down due to people usually just running to the more popular GameStops or many other game selling stores. Even then…GameStop is pretty much killing themselves as far as a store based business BECAUSE they have their own online shop where people that don’t live 10 minutes away from a GameStop will just order their stuff online and wait for it to come in the mail. Not to mention there are PLENTY of other stores dying to take their business. GameStop isn’t the only store that knows video games as a business is stronger than the movie industry. Hell…freaking 7 Eleven sells video games. That’s right…GameStop loses Halo and Madden pre orders to first day releases at a 24/7 convenience store. They’re all trying to put you on this gimmick that if you don’t pre order the game you won’t get it. Then you go to pick up a morning coffee and doughnut at 7 Eleven and realize there are copies of the game on the game rack. Unless you’re some some huge nut hugger of GameStop you’re going to pick the game up the moment you see it in front of your face at Sleven.
Most hardcore gamers and casual gamers aren’t since the hardcore gamers know better than to buy shit from some place that pretends to be the know all about games. In reality it just has random mother fuckers off the street working there who’s main goal is to get you to pre order a game you’ll be able to find practically laying down on the street when you are on your way to work the day of release. Casual gamers just care about whatever is closest to them that will have the game. If the local Best Buy or Target is closer than the GameStop is…GameStop gets screwed over. Then people who don’t live near shit just buy stuff online and the stores and employees get hurt.
So when people get fired from GameStop it’s not because they suck at getting people to pre order Madden or Halo. The games sell themselves. There’s nothing a human being can really do to persuade a pre order unless they can convince you to become a slave to GameStop’s trade in program which a lot of people know better than to do. Just a dumb ploy to be harassed day in and out everytime you walk in about pre ordering a new game. That was enough to keep me from going to GameStops forever on its own. It’s because the economy and business in general is different now and they either don’t have the money to buy it the day of release or would rather just buy it off a website or another competitor’s store they may sell it cheaper. It’s also because the employees that work in the store usually don’t know shit about games either. Not that it would matter that much either since their main goal is to sell a game that sells itself.
This tournament was shit to begin with, kinda like the SF4 tournaments. Only option, usage of 360 kisko pads.
SF4 was hyped as the second coming of SF2. Capcom’s marketing team did an amazing job promoting the game. Namco, not even close. Other problems, aside from the ones you mentioned was the piss poor date of release. When I went into GS all I saw was a flyer for T6, and CoD had not onlly that, but a huge countdown clock as well. Piss poor net code, which was ranted about amongst fans like wildfire on forums. Bamco gone and F’d up.
In the end, T6 probably will out sell SF4 in every other country, but the US; where the Mortal Kombat series is still considered mainstream.
I don’t know about that…I’ve seen lots of Tekken 6 commercials on TV and ads all over gaming sites. Gamespot was one big Tekken poster for a number of days. Plus, there was that whole “vote for your favorite character” thing they had going with the character trailers…
Why is everyone acting like Tekken is some unknown, underdog franchise? It’s huge…everywhere.
Also some of you people have to keep in mind the nationals that previous Tekken games would have. I keep hearing stories of major tournaments during the TTT time period that would trounce turnouts for SFIV today. Though Capcom may have stepped up their game in marketing a bit, Namco has been doing so more consistently for their fans.
Yeah Tekken is basically the fighting game of America. Virtua Fighter was always trying to reach its legacy in America but could never quite do it. This was obviously back in the day when SF was reduced to obscurity outside of CVS2, Marvel and 3rd Strike which sold nowhere near as many copies as Tekken did.
I’m just saying SFIV officially became the NEW fighting game of America. I would say elsewhere SF might still be a bit of an underdog (especially in Japan) but in America…SF is holding the crown now and Tekken 6 is going to be a close second at best. Especially now that arcades are more or less dead and gamers pretty much rate games these days based on the online play. If casual gamers can see lag that’s a HUGE problem. A lot of the reason why SFIV is still popular among a lot of people is the online play was done so that people felt a reason to compete online and be the best online player. You have a bunch of players now in America dying to get to SG rank and all of that shit now because of online SFIV. Just like they’re dying to be the top ranked Halo or CoD player. The nasty Tekken 6 lag is going to keep non tourney going players from even thinking about spending that long with Tekken 6 online.
SF always seemed to be more popular in the states than Tekken. In contrast, Tekken is clearly more popular in Japan. The sales numbers shouldn’t surprise anyone.
