My Custom Vewlix Quest

tokerblue,

Awesome stuff. I really like all the “mods” you’ve made. Especially with the VSHGs.

Have you decided on paint scheme yet? I think the white/green looks better. Although if I were using VSHGs, I’d probably do something black and yellow/dark gray to tie them in.

Anyway, can’t wait to see the finished product.

  • Much thanks. I do have to say that without your Google sketchup files, I wouldn’t have even known where to start. Being able to play with the model in 3D and print measurements was incredibly valuable. Your work has helped out a lot of people!
  • I’m going to go with the white/green layout. Although I am thinking about ways to incorporate the yellow. Maybe I’ll make a white/yellow layout and see how that looks.

Do you know if there is a mount that will not only let you rotate, but move the monitor? Like lets say you want it horizontal, but you want to slide the monitor higher or lower. Or its vertical for shmups, and you want to slide the monitor higher or lower.

Im thinking of the design of my cab in my head, and am stuck on having the monitor at normal horizontal height, and when in vertical mode have the monitor slide down a bit lower than its normal height so when I play a shmup im looking down at the action instead of up. Kind of hard to explain, but hopefully you understand. Seen any mounts like that?

  • What size TV/monitor are you looking to support? They do make those types of articulating desk mounts for smaller monitors, but I believe they are <24". My work actually uses these kinds of mounts for our PC monitor. It allows full rotation and directional positioning. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any for large size sets due to the weight of 32"+ TV’s.

Something like one of these…

Another color mockup with yellow this time. I’m debating whether or not I should leave the control panel black or paint it yellow.

Thanks. I’m looking at either a 37" or a 40" So I know finding a mount for that is going to be pretty hard. I’m pretty set on a 40" but I know im going to add some distance from the monitors and the CP.

Good luck on your search. If you’re looking at an arcade cabinet, 32" is probably the biggest you want to go. If you plan on using a 40" TV, the optimal distance is 5-6’. Unless you plan on extending the control panel A LOT, then you’re going to be continuously shifting your eyes back and forth to look at the screen since it will be larger than your field of vision. For something like the Vewlix, you’ll have the entire screen in your field of vision without having to pan side to side with a 32" screen.

I think you should really go all out and get the real Viewlix panel. It’d be such a shame to do all that work and then have the TE sticks on there.

Especially since you’re already making a modular PC setup!

  • I’m getting this suggestion a lot. I’m using the VSHG though, not the TE.

Do you know what kind of connectors the Vewlix panel uses? Would I be able to plug it into a PC or do I have to do some additional work?

I don’t know the official name for it’s molex like connectors, but you could always gut your VSHG and use all of it innards on it and sell me the leftovers.

Just had a thought.

Did you ever see LA_Akira’s home made Lindberg cabinet? He flush mounted the tops of his VSHGs.

Might be too late, based on how you already constructed your control panel area, but check it out:

That’s actually how I was going to originally do it, but I was a little nervous about taking apart the VSHG in case I ever needed them.

Hopefully, I’ll get a little more done today if my friend is available.

Started the Vewlix side panels. I still have to bevel it some more to get some better angles. Also adding a small piece to level it with the top of the VSHG.

Marquee is almost complete. Also added a small shelf with a lip for the TV. This way, it’s very easy to center the TV in it’s correct position. Cut a grommet hole for the video and audio cables to the TV.

Cut out the back for the wire lattice. Also created two grommet holes at the bottom. One is for the subwoofer cable and the other is for power cables.

Computer modular tray. It’s a 12x40" tray, so there is plenty of room for a FPS keyboard, standard keyboard and a large mousepad simultaneously.

Quick question, are you going to have the keyboard tray underneath the CP? or are you going to switch them out when its time to use the keyboard?

I was designing mine in Googlesketch, but might change direction. Now im debating on making the cab 45"tall (under the CP) or keep it standard 22" I wanted to have the option of either standing or sitting, but if I go with my original standing idea, it will become a Naomi cab. Which is fine, but compact is always better.

  • My PC tray is going on top of the permanent control panel. I’ll be placing the keyboard and mouse on top of the PC tray. The PC tray looks like this:

Its getting close!!! are you doing any mods to the VSHG like changing buttons etc.?
