MvC3 Tournament and Stream commentary thread

Scrubs use Sent beat other scrubs. Coming up with anti-Sent strats to be scrubby Sentinel users is fine, but that doesn’t invalidate that he is still a fantastic character because: better players are going to both use him in a more effective manner AND be on the lookout for those anti-Sent strats. If you think otherwise you’re in denial.

i agree with everyone here on this page of the thread. though i definitely think sent isnt as good as people were saying, hes no charatcer to sleep on either. definitely at this point a top 5 character, perhaps top 3. justin and peter have teams taylor made to deal with sent, so of course he looks shitty when fighting them. wolverine is a great character, but watch wolvie versus a really good arthur or something… poor guy gets locked down a full screen away with little chance to get in… same as she hulk.

the only characters that seem broken imho are jean and DPH. people havent even been using the EXTREMELY lame keepaway that both characters have the potential for, but when they do, the cheese factor will be pumped up 10 fold… characters that can play keepaway as good as arthur, but also have the best mobility and offense in the game… yeah… ok.

DPH is only balanced by her team doing smaller damage than normal since there are no DHC’s or super cancels. snapping jean in is the best strategy, but it can backfire hard. the only advantage on snapping jean in is that she cant tag out or use assists for a bunch of frames… but shes the 2nd best character in the game behind DPH… so you are still snapping in an extremely dangerous character… play with caution. alot of folks got blown up by snapping jean in early.

lol a character where the most effective strats are to random super and pray or run away without pressing buttons, seems weird.

my prob with the phoenix character is that her first (jean) incarnation seems to strong. tracking fireball with an 11 frame teleport… and mad keepaway skills. i dont have a prob with DPH being so strong… but it seems as if all the things that a DPH team has to go through to get her dont balance out her power… i fault jean for this mostly.

but what i do i know, im ass at this game.

I agree with the notion of Sentinel being an outstanding scrub-stomper but only an above-average character at high level. I don’t think there’s ever going to be a point in MvC3’s life where Sent will be considered bad, but I don’t think he’s going to have an easier time than a lot of other characters when it comes to getting results against people who have done their homework.

As for X-Factor, I still see a lot of poor usage of it across the board. Way, WAY too many people pop it out in the open instead of comboing into it or using it to guard cancel into a hyper. Guard Cancel XF3 is a huge asset to reverse momentum when you’re down to your last character, and I didn’t see anyone else in pools beside me ever use it.

i use GC lvl 3 xfc all the time…its my favorite way to use it.
overall i saw a better overall use for xfc in this tourny than others… people are getting smarter about xfc. my reasons for using xfc:

  1. if i am comboing 2 characters (even if its a level 1 xfc its TOTALLY worth it) i use it with wolverine alot: start combo and see both character getting hit,do standard bnb, when i land in the middle of the combo activate xfc… kill both characters. stupid advantage to me.

  2. save my character from chip death: if my character is really important to my team cause it counters the other team well, then xfc to save him/her can be a real choice.

  3. to just generally kill an annoying character/assist.

  4. lvl3 pop outside of combo on characters that have high speed benefits or easy from far damage benefits (chun/wolvie and dormammu/storm etc.) this is why imho it isnt necessarily bad to pop lvl 3 xfc outside of combo depending on the character… you are supposed to make use of the speed increase to make laming it out harder… thats what the speed increase is for… no assist so your sped up.

  5. as a guard cancel (this is so good if you know what to look for)

  6. TO KILL OFF MY OPPONENTS LAST CHARACTER. (awesome use) they saved for lvl3 xfc? better hope i dont touch them, cause they will die straight out if i do.

i love xfc as a mechanic though… just open the game up so much, and you still ahve to play even when its 3v1.

No it isn’t. Zero blows Sent up, Zero’s long reaching normals hit multiple times, his jH hits multiple times, Sent’s super armor is worthless here. Then Zero has his buster and other projectile to spam from a far. The only thing keeping Sent in this fight is Zero’s own low life, one hit and Zero is dead, which true with Zero vs most of the cast. With an assist like drones available, Sent is just gonna be blocking drones as Zero sets some shit up and keeps him guessing. Sent’s huge ass body makes it really hard to avoid blocking.

@ Dime

Their teams aren’t custom built to beat Sent, there’s very very few characters that don’t have something on Sent. Every character seems to have an instant overhead available on Sent, his crouch is as tall or taller than most standing characters. His size makes it hard to get out of pressure.

I don’t think Phoenix is good at all at the moment. Sure she might be a great character especially as D. Phoenix but this is a team game, she takes up a slot as assist you won’t call out and makes you completely stop burning meter if you want D. Phoenix. I’m positive people will finds better ways to manage Phoenix and meter for her but right now, I don’t see people using her for more than D. Phoenix and risking it all on her to win, it’s a big gamble for pay off that even if you get D. Phoenix, she dies as fast as she can kill.

It was pretty hilarious, especially with how basic some of the combos being dropped were… makes me feel better about myself.

No… not at all… level 2 XF Sent vs level 3 XF sent is still just a game of “first guy to get hit loses” … Zero can handle Sent, though he does need a reset.

Well usually level 2 is blown if they are having trouble killing one character that they just need fucking dead or if they actually hit two people to try get an early 2 for 1. Especially the level 1 XFCs that lead to a dropped combo then shortly them losing the match because of the lack of XFC. I agree that XFC level 3 Guard Cancels are great comeback tools, haven’t been seeing much of that either and there were plenty of opportunities to use it.

Jean is just all in win or lose. Everyone has to understand that. Got no problem with her and regular phoenix is actually pretty damn awesome. Its just u can’t go to town with regular phoenix unless you are sitting on 5 bars.

It is kinda sad though to see Haggar disappear from the radar. I don’t think I saw too many. Tron basically took that spot top tier assist spot, mostly because she is pretty damn invincible most of the time and doesn’t lose health. Plus Tron is a bit more mobile than Haggar and perhaps can do better on her own if she is the last character on the team.

A friend of mine that placed 17th at Final Round rocked MODOK/Arthur/Haggar in casuals for much of the day and did alright from what I saw. If we make it out to Power-Up next month and there’s an MvC3 team tourney I’m going to try and convince him to run that while I run Team Darkstalkers. Trolling and theme teams all day.

mvc3 combos are easy, but people haven’t had TEN YEARS to get them down. The game has been out like a month so of course people are going to drop combos. Especially when they are nervous from being at a huge tournament and on a stream.

This. Combos in training mode/online aren’t the same as competing in a major where you risk losing the chance to earn thousands of dollars in front of a large audience and possibly the internet.

what i dont understand about the DPH teams is, why dont people build the team around her? seems like she would really benifit from one of the inv assists to stop rushdown, or the meter build assists, or both

seems like right now people are just throwing her on teams with the hope of her saving them in lv3xf. not too much team to it at this point

Having Phoenix and meter building assist means you have no offensive or defensive assist for one character.

ok. i wouldnt suggest having her as the never seen 3rd and a second as the meter build

may as well do something to help you get those precious 5 meters. just not seeing any creativity in that department.

throw the bitch on point. not like regular jean needs assists to get in.

It is an interesting idea, if we’ll see any 3 character teams that have phoenix, rather than the standard two character meterless teams that most people seem to try to play.

i dunno. the 2 character meterless seems like it works ok for right now, in the sent is OP sense of things. but i cant see it as something that will work out in the long run

I have such a team. Tron/Zero (or Dante)/Phoenix. Tron builds insane meter, has gustaff fire, good HP pool. Zero and Dante are for AA assist and Phoenix on TK overdrive.

I came up w/ a few ideas for runners however I lost access to the game yesterday so I couldn’t practice today. The idea is to use a ‘corridor’ type AA assist such as Dante, Dormammu or tracking AA such as Doom Hidden Missiles that would work great for both Tron and Phoenix.

There was a Phoenix team on stream that had Morrigan on it. That didn’t help get the 5 bars, it just got the first character killed faster.

Best Phoenix teams I’ve seen so far has been putting her with 2 batteries do as much they can before dying.

Hopefully, there will be more players who can actually play Phoenix. She can build her own meter pretty good, not many people are using healing field as Phoenix or Dark Phoenix to prolong her life, they just put her last and wait for 5 bars and then trigger XF3. I think she’d be pretty good in the 2nd slot with a solid assist to help her out, using Healing Field to keep regular Phoenix alive longer or stay with a Healing Field up as Dark Phoenix.

yeah i rewrote that post after you replied, but basically i said the same thing. put her on point.

i just hope to stop seeing

  1. pick point character
  2. pick second point character
  3. dark phoenix
  4. ???
  5. profit

This. I think one of the first Phoenix teams that was quite annoying to play was Hulk/Sentinel/Phoenix. You got two characters that do a lot of damage meterless and take a crapload of damage to kill [meaning more meter during the hits]. Usually will be sacrificial lambs to feed Phoenix her 5 meters. But yeah I don’t understand the lack of Healing Field. I guess kill kill is all people think of?

she still shouldn’t be ran on point (although I’m fond of the idea and was thinking about doing it). But yeah I wrote in a post a page or so ago that I’m sick of seeing throwaway characters on Phoenix teams. It doesn’t make any sense and it opens Phoenix players to runners and no answers for it.

Doesn’t work. Run away at the end. You’d have to successfully duo w/ Hulk and Sentinel and at that point you might as well not put Phoenix on your team and instead put someone that will fill in for a weakness.
