Tinh/Mine is a very strong Marvel player. He’s been playing Marvel 2 for a long time, but his main issue is that he does not really travel to tournaments. Regardless, you don’t get into grand finals at a major and sending JWong into loser’s bracket (2-0 at that) by being bad or mediocre. It’s very hard to say “he should have done this and that” when, well, you’re not the guy who beat JWong. It may be right or wrong to say he should have done X and Y against JWong, but at the same time, his team and abilities put JWong into loser’s bracket.
JWong mixed it up and changed his team around a bit after realizing his She-Hulk was not going to be very affective against Tinh’s team. Maybe Tinh should have put Magneto first against Wolverine, but unfortunately, his team order wasn’t really the issue here. Wolverine was. It’s easy to say “just zone him out and never let him hit you”, but that’s pretty much easier said than done. Akuma Tatsu assist covers a lot of ground, beats all kinds of projectiles to help cover Wolverine’s weaknesses, and sets up mix up perfectly. You would essentially have to play perfectly and not Wolverine ever hit you, which we know isn’t exactly possible given how strong he is and all the mix up he can do with the right assists. Eventually you are going to get hit if you guess wrong. So you get hit. Now you’re in a combo which either leads to your character being dead or puts you into another guessing situation against Wolverine. If your character is still alive, you have to guess. Guess wrong, that character is now dead. Now your new character has to come in. Now you have to guess again. Guess wrong, same situation as before repeats until you are dead.
Wolverine is literally a coin flip character.
Before Marvel 3 top 8 was going to start (or AE? Don’t remember), Daigo was taking money matches for Marvel and AE. First to 3 for $20 or first to 5 for $50. I watched every single Marvel money match before they had to stop because finals were starting and Daigo would have to play. From what I remember, he played six or seven money matches. Won some, lost some. In case you guys don’t remember, his team is Wolv/Dante/Akuma.
The match would usually play out like this: Daigo’s Wolv gets in a hit, goes into launcher, air combo, dive kick, level 1 X-Factor, launcher, air combo, knockdown, OTG, call Akuma assist, Berserker Barrage into Berserker Barrage X. Character is dead. Next character comes in. X-Factor still active. Jam Session cross up that you have to guess. Guess wrong, X-Factor Wolverine does either enough damage to kill that character or DHC into Dante which is usually enough to kill most characters. After that, you’re down to your last character and your chances of coming back are very low because that team is up three characters with more than likely a good amount of life and you’re low on meter yourself.
That’s how Wolverine is. He is a coin flip character. Now, other characters can do similar things, but Wolverine just does it better than them. He has individual weaknesses, but they are covered with the right assists.
Getting back to JWong vs Tinh. JWong didn’t necessarily “step his game up”. JWong made an adjustment to his team by putting Storm second and Wolverine on point. Any time he got a random hit from Wolverine being Wolverine, he’d go into BnB and then snap in Phoenix. Time to guess. Guess wrong, Phoenix dead. After that, next character comes in. Guess wrong, character eats a combo and the cycle of guessing continues. JWong was also doing some weird, new Drill Claw cross up mix up as well while characters were coming in. It was a combination of the former statement and Tinh’s game just crumbling to pieces as to why JWong dominated grand finals.
Regardless of JWong vs Tinh, Wolverine is a problem. A big problem. Phoenix and Wolverine are both huge problems in this game.
