People always say average damage… Cap does good damage at worst -750kish for one meter in a combo that nets you more than one meter is nothing to scoff at - and with lvl 3 he easily does over a million.
Yeah, Cap does some pretty good damage, and honestly, his DHC’s aren’t so bad IMO, though it may just be because of my characters.
I do want to add though that he is really bad at full screen. 3/4th screen and closer he does okay, but people who can keep him at full screen hurt (Deadpool with Tron/Dante assists hurts really bad for example.).
Pros:
- Cap’s special moveset counters about 80% of the stuff people can throw at you in a match. I view him as almost a counter type/breakthrough character.
- Solid Hitter, does great, solid damage.
- Charging Star is one of the fastest moving attacks in the game, very difficult to counter if the opponent threw out a move.
- Able to break through projectiles.
- One of the few characters that can cross-up via Cartwheel/Backflip.
- Decent normals.
- Stars N Stripes has invincible frames.
- One of the fastest st. Jabs in the games (and rapid-fire!). Surprisingly handy at stopping attacks.
- Shield Slash a very handy lockdown/combo tool.
- Able to combo off of nearly any successful Shield Slash hit.
- Strongest when he has an assist to complement his abilities.
- Takes two average bnb combos to kill most characters.
Cons:
- No 100% safe blockstrings (some combos leave you wide open if they push-block at the right time, others lose their effectiveness if you’re attacking an opponent in the corner)
- Charging Star + Hyper version is unsafe on block.
- Stars N Stripes + Hyper version is unsafe on block.
- Shield Slash unsafe at point blank range even if blocked/hit.
- Final Justice vulnerable on startup.
- Difficult to combo in the corner
- Poor Anchor abilities/potential (might go as far to say that he’ll need x-factor lvl 3 available, just for the ability to continue a combo)
- Requires an assist to be a threat.
- Hard to hit characters that try to stay high in the air.
- Difficult to open up opponents solo.
- Poor air mobility options (save for a. Shield Slash).
- Requires midscreen to achieve full potential of combo damage.
- Lack of solo OTG options/Solo ways to combo off throws.
- Lack of variety in mix-up options w/o assist.
- Poor Chip Damage abilities
- No real way to break 800k damage solo w/o using lvl3, x-factor, DHC, or assist.
- (Forgot to add): Really hard to deal with keepaway from max full screen range.
Gimpy, while I do agree Cap can do good damage, in my experience the majority of solo Cap combos in a match hover around the 700k or less mark. Most matches don’t typically give a situation where you’ll have a lvl3 on hand to use in a combo either. There are also situations where the opponent is forced to a corner mid-combo, and adjustments will be made that probably hurt damage output (again, this is assuming we’re using Cap only, and not using DHCs/Aerial Tags/assists to increase damage output).
Even with the recent combo videos in the corner, those vary by character/situation/team setup.
To me, he’s more of a character that requires you to be a bit reckless/good at reading players to bring out his full potential. It also means you need to be good at controlling and confusing the opponent so that they’re more prone to making mistakes that get their character killed.
One of the handy things I’ve discovered about Cap is if you can reset mid-combo, you can kill about 80% of the cast.
Good post JT, but I’m going to quote some parts of your post I want to talk about.
- Charging Star may be one of the fastest moving attacks in the game, but it’s only difficult to counter if the opponent threw out a projectile. A physical move of any kind will break it (Except maybe Mystic Smash… Seriously, that move has such garbage priority.), making it really only useful for getting close on keepaway characters (L version only) or punishing projectiles/half-screen-or-further jumps.
I’m not really sure that’s all that useful considering we can’t follow up with anything. It pretty much just resets the situation while tacking on 80-130k. However, it is really punishable and requires a good read. TBH, the Hyper version is better in every respect and isn’t really all that punishable.
Be that as it may, I feel st L is a move you should never be using except for the sake of saying you “Punched 'em in da mouth.”. Cr. L is better in every respect. It has more range, comes out 1 frame faster (May not sound like much, but that’s the difference between being able to punish Wesker st H with a full combo or letting him walk free.) and hits low. Cr. L, along with J. :d: H, should be your 2 main punishing tools for blocked and whiffed attacks. They also outright beat a lot of things because the former is fast as hell and the latter is pretty fast and seems to have retard priority.
To be fair, that’s true of most of the cast, especially against a character that has a 4 frame combo starter (Seriously, cr. L is amazing.).
Ehhh… SJ M Shield Slash seems to work pretty well. Not the greatest option, but it’s not bad. I mean, I play Chris as my anchor. THAT is a bad character vs flyers and SJ projectile users. Cap is merely meh.
Again, this is more or less universal. There are few characters who can. Even Wolverine needs assists or X-factor to ToD characters. Plus the fact we actually CAN combo into our lvl 3 without assists or X-factor and that we build meter pretty easily is pretty good.
While I agree with the ‘good at reading’ part, I’m surprised no one has described him the way I did to a friend who’s just starting and wanting to play him. I told him that while Cap is fun, and can do things in the right hand, he is in no way a beginner character because he is a punish character. He’s not a character you can just put in training mode for days and be good with. He’s a character where you need to know pretty much every move in the game, what it does, and whether or not you can punish it and how if you want to win.
Very well said!
Cap is the main reason I like to practice soooo much, I feel as though he takes extremely high MENTAL execution (as opposed to being like Viper with physical execution skills). If you don’t have that, or can’t learn that, Cap will never ever ever really be your cup of tea.
I think Cap is amazing because of the mental workout, and lack of autopilot stuff with him. He is to me a huge amount of fun because of the skill he takes to use effeciently.
I agree about his pros/cons for the most part that are already stated above. I do not think however that he’s the worst in the game, he does take work though to get the most out of him. (no idea who I really think is the actual worst in the game)
Kei
if y’all like captain america thor hulk and iron man you’re gonna love my video LOL it’s still a little ways out but there’s some filthy stuff i’ve captured so far! i need to work on some more creative original iron man setups though, the cap and hulk stuff is there no problem, but iron man is tough to be creative with because scaling hurts him pretty hard and makes the combos really difficult after a certain point, and thor just doesn’t have a ton of combo options IMO…
but there are a couple choice captain america things in this that’re gonna BLOW YOUR MINDS.
i hope.
Looking forward to it Gimpy! Really getting back into Cap after switching him out for Jill/Iron Man/ Deadpool… Iron Man needs more love as does the Cap and between Kei Ken and yourself your all getting me pretty hyped.
Also shout out for Brawl Central am I right?
i am afraid that CAP will still be low tier in UMVC3. It’s looking like strider, hawkeye, ghost rider, fire brand, nemesis, dr.strange are all looking better than him by a lot. argh…why does CAP only have to have 3 moves!~?
Don’t assume the new characters - especially strange and nemesis - are so strong just yet.
cr.l>cr.m>st.h>l.repulsor blast>cr.m>st.h>:s: is my starter combo, regardless of creative setups, repulsor blast being in the combo makes engaging in a combo worlds safer on block due to repulsor blast spread. It’s been working for me since I started using it.
Lol gimpy it’s not your opinion, it’s a fact. I’ve been working on resets and ways to land MH more than trying to develop new combos. Though I’ve been testing with MT as my super if I land a happy birthday since, while the timing is strict, it is easier to land dhcs from it, including HCS. Hope that helps, if it does at all.
DAMMIT hurry up and release it gimpy, I could use some new technology, when I get back into mvc3. Hope you get it out before umvc3, unless you think it’ll be a universal mvc3 game tutorial.
After playing any game for a certain period of time, you tend to get an idea of where characters MIGHT stand. But of course it’s all theory until people can sit down with it. I DO feel Stephen’s counter projectile super will bring him to at least b tier for simply that, shuts down random beam hypers, for those who don’t use Steve on their team.
If Strange stays the way he is, the mere fact he has a delayable projectile AND an instant teleport will probably put him really high.
That being said, they seem to be doing a really good job with balancing from what I’ve seen so far, so I’ll wait until November before complaining.
In any case, Cap is most definitely improving. If he’s still low tier in Ultimate, then that’s a good sign that the low tiers in this game are damn good, and therefore the game probably very balanced.
Well said, I have no problem with Cap remaining on a lower tier than some characters…if he can be this good, and he’s getting even better, this game is truly balance extremely well. I really do believe that SSF4 and MvC3 are two of the most (if not THE) balanced games Capcom have ever made. Sure they’re not 100% perfect, but they much much much closer than many others out there, and that makes me extremely happy with both.
@ gimpy
…November is coming soon, we DEMAND this video before then!
Kei
i’m working on it now! i have to get a few more clips recorded for thor and iron man, then i’m probably set. some sick stuff in here.
it’s going to be a little longer than i anticipated, but that should be fine…
just gotta find the PERFECT music for it.
something somewhat heroic, and fairly fast paced, would be great. know of any?
ALSO my post from the marvel thread about strange -
"From what I’ve seen without ANY assuming
He has no airdash. His projectile traps are not quick to set up like trish. His “beam” locks him in for the entire two hit animation. His counter super, while very damaging, cannot be used in combos. His otg super and basic normals do not do much damage.
At first glance sure the assumption is MAGNETO + TELEPORT + TRAPS LOLOLOLOL but we simply don’t have the data to know if any portion of that is true.
Just saying lets settle a bit. He looks filthy though man style for DAYS."
He does style. However, they DO do a projectile/teleport crossup in one of the videos.

Sonic, Live and Learn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEzXFuYN89k
The Justice Song (extended): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvKsQ1rC0wk (He IS the leader of the avengers after all, why can’t his song be the song of the video?)
You don’t have to necessarily use those song listed, but hopefully they can give you an idea.
i think i found the song i want to use last night, but i’m not sure. the video is looking to be about 7 minutes or so of combo footage, but that could change.
Make sure to add clips from the movies/cartoon show for extra flashiness :3
I’ll flare it up a bit, but I’m not sure how much. The animations from the cartoon and the movies are too different to be used MID video - but I’ll try to work them in.
I plan on using a few choice voice clips from the cartoon though because it’s the same voice actors
Good move sir.
I’ll be the first to say that when umvc3 comes out you better sit in your basement and figure out stuff for Steve pronto for the rest of us super soldiers :3
That’s where ill be and that’s what ill be doing.
