MvC3 Actual Balance/Potential Tiers Discussion

Personally, I think Chris is one of the worst keepaway characters in the game. I could play better keepaway with someone like Dante or even Thor. Chris’s keepaway works if you don’t jump ever. Once you jump toward him, his anti air options are limited. There’s not much to worry about when you super jump or air dash toward Chris.

He needs more support playing keepaway then most keepaway characters.

I remember hearing early on that Chris’ flamethrower was supposedly good for anti air purposes but I dont know if that still holds true.

Sent
Phx
Dante

Mags
Wesker
task/wlvy/akuma

Sent has everything, period. Even if he’s a target for high lows if he mashed S, you lose, or insta hard drive…etc
Phx fundamentally changes how you have to play and is a solid character in herself, of course Dark Pheonix is a 90% chance of winning. Snapping her in is strong but she has many evasive options, and can even mount her own offense on an eager attacker.
Dante is the best all around character with no weakness,
Range/high-low/forward-back/zoning/speed/damage/versatility/assist/supers

Yeah if you’re jumping right in front of Chris and attacking. Jump at his head or cross him up, and it beats it clean. Flamethrower is only good for chip and combos.

His keep away is very different. With the right assists helping him he can put a lot of shit on the screen at once and can be hard to get any momentum on him. His normals aren’t that bad and he hits somewhat decently hard (but who doesn’t in this game).

He is one of the characters I am most interested in seeing how he ends up faring. I literally don’t have much of a clue, I don’t think he is one of the best, but I also think he has some interesting tools that will be cool to explore.

Top 5 I think is accurately Sent, Wesker, Taskmaster, Magneto, and the last I’m unsure about.

This is based on a few things. Health (although Mags’ is low), damage output, overall offense and defense, how they perform on point, as an assist, and their individual comeback factor.

With the exception of them as assists, these are all what I think about the characters on an individual basis (For example, She-Hulk is amazing but I don’t ever see her doing as well without a great assist like Tron). Each character has great damage output and can amass meter pretty quickly. Having any of those characters on point usually results very well. They all have at least 1 good assist, and they all are great when trying to stage a comeback, with or without X-factor.

They also each have very good hypers, some safe, some hard to defend, some very damaging.

These characters can play a great lame game too. I use both Wesker and Taskmaster and can do so when I want but it is far from my playstyle. They have many defensive tactics, good keepaway weapons, and can retalliate effectively when down.

I take in health as a factor for what options you have, aka, what you can risk attempting. Although Magneto has low health, he’s got great individual pressure with his extremely quick tridashing, flight cancel tricks.

No one cares, but lol I’m bored and feel like typing.

Chris is a fairly cool anti-zoning character. I think he sort of works as an assist character on the assumption that a lot of assist anchors aren’t good rushdown characters, and if Chris does get closer to them they don’t have great defensive answers to his lockdown either. If it comes down to Chris vs. Sentinel he has no reason to scare.

Chris is decent, but not as a keepaway character. Sure, hidden missiles or even a solid anti-air assist would help his keepaway game, but I think his tools are better suited for locking down the opponent into the corner at mid-screen. TK gunfire and flamethrower lockdown along with assists to back him up so he can put down landmines and throw grenades for chip. From mid-range, he can use his shotgun (L version gunfire) as a decent anti-air. I think the key to Chris’s game is keeping pressure at a distance that’s not in their face but not all the way on the other side of the screen.

EDIT: Like Delta mentioned, it’s about dat lockdown.

Taskmaster is really good all round except in the X-factor department. It just doesnt benefit him like other characters. His lack of a level 3 also makes him a bad anchor character.

In my opinion I think Task’s zoning capabilities are underrated. You see alot of TM’s now just rushing in with shield skills and hoping for a combo or doing web swing shenanigans.Light arrows on the ground and jumping medium arrows are really good zoning tools, especially when combined with doom missiles assist. You can lock people down this way and force them into chip.I often get 40% chip damage off my opponent before they’ve even got in.

I’ve heard that pushblocking puts an end to Chris’ incediary grenade and mine lockdown?

No order…

God Tier:

Dark Phoenix (Second Best XFC) Nuff said.

High Tier:

Dante (Great mobility, teleport, wave dash) Great regular attacks. Fireworks hits in front and back. Can keep you in a long block string. Many of his moves are unpunishable. Decent keepaway game with missiles, vertical shots while superjumping canceled into beowulf kick. Good rushdown game. Good ranged normals. Devil Trigger and Air raid do a good amount of chipping damage. Decent assist. Great Battery.

Task (Can attack almost every area of the screen at any given time) Good assist. Great damage. Wave Dash isn’t that bad. Great DHC for any character. High Damage. Good chip damage. Good keepaway.

Ammy (Best Super in the game IMO) Can counter a lot with solar flare. Good comboing ability. Small. Good keepaway. Coldstar is a very good assist.

Upper Mid Tier:
Zero (not enough damage, needs drones to rtsd)

Really?

It’s not his poor mobility or his poor mix up that makes him dependent on an assist that hurts him as an anchor but the lack of level 3 hyper?

Sentinel is a horrible anchor. All he does is get hit by everything on his way moving forward and everyone has an instant overhead on him. He has awful mixup, what is he going to do? wavedash to command grab? If you’re awake, how are you not super jumping away from him on reaction when he gets close to you?

Marn said it best, if it wasn’t for drones, he wouldn’t be last on any team.

I feel like arthur is overlooked as an anchor character. Some fantastic assists, and when he comes out on a full gold armor meter 3rd, plus level 3 x factor, he can literally just shoot homing crossbows from anywhere and chip damage 2 characters to death before xfactor runs out. I can see now why he isn’t the best, but at the same time I feel he could definitely fill this extremely viable role.

I’d disagree with the premise outright, he’s a great anchor. His mobility isn’t the best, but he does get a passable speed boost with XF3, and his zoning ability ( particularly his B arrows, both air and ground ) forces most characters to come to him anyways, even a few of the other supposedly dedicated zoning characters. His mixups aren’t the best, but they aren’t the worst either, and he can capitalize better than most on other characters making a mistake. Though I will say he’s free to Amaterasu.

Then again I’d say maybe a third the cast is free to Amaterasu… everyone else is just at a mild disadvantage… Seriously, does she lose to anyone, because I’m drawing a blank here.

I doubt it, I really like deadpool in the matchup though, i can keep her out pretty easy barring random supers hit me. Also agree that sent is an amazing anchor, people only look at anti sentinal strats that are so abundant now, but no one is acknowledging actual sentinal players who play him as a character and not just an assist and random S masher.

Most of the Anti Sentinel strats out there aren’t anythign groundbreaking. Plus a lot of them don’t take into consideration many of the other variables in Sent’s game. They are all basically “Here is how to avoid cr. M and S… here is what you can do to spit. See? He is a super free character now”

That bugs me the most how people try and make Sentinel seem he is a super big turd and really easy to get around. Sure maybe Sentinels who just spam his obvious things… but the more strategic ones are a bitch. He isn’t as Godly as people cried when the game first dropped, but he is far from easy to beat.

Sorry, for some reason I keep thinking of comebacks when I see anchor. Tasky’s lame game is pretty great with arrows but if I think he’s pretty much done if he’s trying for a comeback. Just pushblock and hit him out of spidey swing if he tries to use it to move back in.

Sent is good in position 1 and 2 with assist to help him imo, this is where I see good Sentinel players have him. Position 3 with no assist, he’s done. He’s getting lamed out or rushed down, hoping for a mistake so he can bring pain. Hoping your opponent screws up is not a good strat.

… gets bum-fucked by rushdown, subject to a plethora of instant overheads, has little to no mix-up potential, relies on the opponent to make a mistake or fall asleep to do damage, gets eaten up by various characters already this early in the metagame.

For real, assume that you can consistently avoid his command grab and watching a Sent struggle to land a hit on his own is comedic. Sent jump :h:'s, PUSHBLOCK, Sent whiffs st. :s:, repeat. Dash in for command throw, super jump to other side of screen, repeat.

Aside from the annoying/cheesey as hell Sent spit/Doom missiles combo, Sent’s not so fantastic on point, even with assists. Watch top level MvC3. Two best players don’t use Sent, and Sent gets fucked up easily by them. Sentinel is seriously a liability on point against certain teams. He looks pathetic in some matchups. High tier? For now maybe, I guarentee you he won’t be top 5 in less than a few months, if he even is generally regarded to be now.

edit: he’s still kinda scary now, but I don’t see his place in the tiers doing anything but lowering as time goes by

To be fair, most of the sentinel play has been little more than that. My guess from the start was Sent starting out as elder god tier, then slowly dropping as people figured out how to beat Cr.:m:, :s:, and :h:/cr.:h:…

and that he’ll eventually pop back up in the tiers when sentinel players figure out how to :hcb::atk: and do fly combos… and generally just… y’know, play the character.

Well you shouldn’t be doing random raw spidey swings, though he can do tricks with timing them weird and baiting out punishes. He’s ludicrously damaging in XF3 though ( then again, that describes a lot of the cast ) and is one of the better characters at capitalizing on any sort of error on the other player’s part. Though admittedly he does benefit a lot from the right assists.

I’d actually say the best answer to Task trying to make a comeback ( unless he has enough spare meter and time to chip you to death with ridiculous XF3 legion arrow ) is to **not **press buttons unless he’s trying to set up sword master or something.

why is it that i agree with damn near anything you say, ever?

yeah deadpool is one of the few characters that seems to give ammy some real problems. all characters can kill her though, but only a few give her problems… if that makes any sense.

Sentinel is free against my team. It’s those assist drones that give me the most trouble.
