Alright, long time lurker feeling that he’s got some spare change. I’ve been reading a lot of this topic about possible tier lists and I feel like I should drop off my thoughts so I can get some feedback on it for my own knowledge. Let’s hope my post doesn’t catch some wandering flames.
There is very little meaning to the order within the separate tiers, as a numbered system is only really effective for the top 10 in my opinion.
S: Magneto, Wesker, Dante, Ammaterasu, Phoenix
A+: Wolverine, Taskmaster, Zero, Storm
A: Sentinel, Akuma, Trish, She-Hulk
B+: X-23, Dormammu, Dr. Doom, Tron Bonne
B: Deadpool, Spencer, C. Viper, Thor, Shuma Gorath
C+: Super Skrull, Ryu, Spider-Man, Felicia
C: Chris, Chun-Li, Iron Man, Hulk, Jill
D+: Haggar, Arthur, Morrigan
D: Viewtiful Joe, MODOK
F: Captain America, Hsien-Ko
I draw the line at B tier being the lowest ranking characters I’ve seen in consistent use at tournaments on teams that have performed well. There are obvious exceptions of course in Felicia, Hsien-Ko, Captain America obviously, but I’ve seen very few good performances with those characters (not claiming they do not exist, example being Josh Wongs Felicia).
I think it’s a pretty solid consensus so far about the top 5, though the order is of course debatable. I agree completely with those saying Dante’s potential to be #1 is through the roof. His bold cancels, amazing movepool, options, and just everything about him leaves so much open for discovery. As of now though, I do feel that Magneto is the best character this game has to offer. He performs every roll better than most dedicated characters to that role and is a threat at every stage in a match.
My question on Phoenix is how she’s going to end up being placed. I feel she’s either a liability (and in that case barely keeping top 5) or extremely powerful being easily the #1 character at the moment. I’ve seen ways of dealing with her in videos and such, and I’m curious as to why I’m not seeing any pro’s actually taking advantage of invincible level 3s and such. I can’t recall the match exactly, but there was a game at Powerup (remind me who the top Wesker’s are, he was a Wesker player) where the players Wesker killed phoenix in a ground string. Now, from that point he could have done Lost in Nightmare and used the invincibility frames to go through the Dark transformation knockback, and KO phoenix, but instead he backed off. Is this because at high level of play this is not viable, or is it just taking time for players to catch on?
My second question is on the tiering of A+ specifically (and rounding out the top 10). After all the hype Wolverine has been getting, and including his nasty 50/50 mixups, it’s easy to say he’s at least top 10 that’s not debatable. What I’m wondering is if he is a guaranteed #6 or if he has the possibility to break into S. He has the tools to be top 5 in my opinion, but from what I’ve read very few people want to crack the established top 5 we have going right now. This also leaves Taskmaster and Zero questionable for me, as a week or two ago I would have put them higher than Wolverine, but look at us now. Both characters are extremely solid and play well, but I feel they might be hitting a high point in their potential, leaving room to be moved around.
As for positions 9 and 10, I would like to say that Storm and Sentinel fit the bill for their DHC potentials, damage, combos, keepaway, and just about every reason why we know that they are good, but the remainder of A and B+ all seem to have possibilities. I hear Trish getting thrown around, Akuma is a well known monster, She-Hulk has been shown to be a very solid character, X-23 (thanks to Tatsu alone really so far) has been showing massive improvements in performance, and the remainder of B+ all have amazing assist options and perform very well on point. I’d like to say that I’m comfortable with those top 17, but who has a top 17 anyway?
Anyway, let me know how I did. I’m very curious in seeing the list for this game get exposed and it’d be nice to start getting a solid framework around at least the top half of the game.
