Music Producers Thread v 3.0

If you really want to learn how to mix/master, you should think about taking an engineering class. It would really be beneficial in the long run. Most producers I know, don’t mix/master.

Other than that, just keep up fooling around until it sounds good. You’ll learn something.

Flow is Key

new track http://fresh.tablist.net/beep/download.php?file=0f7815d321e25abb5e56591f59b78de6 im not a producer, I am a Turntablist so this was the closest thread for that.

i’m late but fl7 is awesome

Yep.

So is Reaper 2.0.

Yea theres ALOT of noise, but I can’t figure out how to get Ableton to record the sound coming from the line input on my computer (yea, I’m pretty much a newb). It records just fine from the mic input.

Thanks for the info on the driver.

^5 new songs.

you’ll notice if you actually go to my page… that i’ve taken some acapellas and mixed them over a few tracks that i had already made which i’ve decided to make a mixtape out them. only a few SRKers have recieved it…fo’ free…lol.

i’m not sure if i’m gonna put it out there in the hood, or just share it for promo-no homo reasons.

anyway, critique if needed…

I’d say to just learn to mix. Mastering is for someone else to do imo. Just pick up a book or go on the net to learn. The key is just to put everything in it’s proper place.

Just bought psp mix saturator, damn my stuff sounds warmer now.

i like that blackbelt jones track!!! lol

I’ve always been a fan of instrumentals, beats in such but inever had the time to make/produce some of my own.
i would like to know what are some good free pro tools, synthesizer, etc to start out with?

Is anyone else looking forward to the release of Reason 4?

The new sequencer/arranger window looks like a BIG improvement. And that Thor Synthesizer and the new Arppegiator look pretty kick ass. I was actually hoping for more features (i.e. VST support, but thats robably never gonna happen.) Hopefully it’ll be worth my money when I pick it up.

what good sound/editing programs are there of the CoolEdit Pro mold.

Check out Adobe audition. It’s basically the child of Cool Edit.

yay i finally got what I needed (the E-Mu 0202)

but now i gotta figure out what program to use and how to use it. It came with a nice bundle (cubase le, Ableton Live, Wavelab, amplitube, Sonar LE, SFX Machine, and Proteus VX)

i just want to learn how to mix, any good websites/programs for that?

Yes there are a ton. A simple search in google, or going to the forums where I’ve pointed out some sites to go to in the first post should do the trick. Be warned though, a lot of tutorials are aimed towards rock/pop. I make dance music, and the advice they gave me seemed horrible. Some tutorials say “no compression” or “don’t eq much” which I think doesn’t work when it comes to dance music because synths tend to go all over the place, and you need that big sound. In modern hip hop and rnb, i think compression is important, and it gets messy in the low end too since a lot of deep 808 kicks are low, so you’ll need to eq a bit. A natural sound happens to work better with rock music should you choose to do so, so that’s why many tutorials give tips on to not eq too much or compress.

The thing is you need decent monitors, or if you don’t have decent monitors you’ll have to do it the poor man’s way.

1.Ever listen to your PC’s speakers when playing your favorite CD, and notice differences in the overall color of the tracks? What you need to do here is know the characteristics of your pc’s speakers. For example I know that my speakers tend to show the high end more and don’t really emphasize on the low end of the spectrum so I have to look at a spectrum analyzer to see if it shows anything wrong.

2.When I’m nearing my final mix, I burn it on a cd , put it in my boom box, play it on the tv, and then put it in the car to test it. If I notice something wrong I fix what needs to be fixed.

On actual mixing, your goal is to have each instrument sit in it’s proper space. Boosting usually won’t do any good. A mix sounds phat because instruments sit in their proper places. Also, if a sample is bad, no amount of EQing will fix it.

Some peopl will disagree with me, so what you have to do is listen to other people’s advice, and do what sounds good to you. If it sounds good, it is good.

if anyone has a question about actual hardware mixing(mainboard console, samplers, outboard units)… ask away. i have 11 years of production experience and 10 years of turntable-based mixing. i started out with hip-hop but felt it was too simplistic so i moved to detroit techno a few years later… though i will answer questions on either genre.

… i am lucky enough to have greg allman(of the allman brothers) as a neighbor so if any questions are too far reaching for myself, i could ask him. hopefully i can help some of you out.

also… as far as software goes… i have a collection of vst’s, sample packs, and sequencing programs ranging from $250k-500k… if anyone is interested, hit me up VIA PM and i will give you my soulseek username(i also have 25k ep’s and lp’s which i have taken the time to mark with precise key and bpm info… as far as i know i am one of the few ppl who has taken the time to do this on such a large scale… not to boast, i am here to contribute;)
