why not the TvC community did it. They banned shit that made the game “boring/stale/unfun/changed general strategy/etc”

If you ban Chun then you might as well just ban Yun and then ban Ken and then ban Makoto and then ban Sean and then ban…
3rd Strike is what it is and it’s only really a couple things about Chun that really put her over the top of the other cast. Mainly her abilities when she gains 2 meters is probably the most powerful of any character in the game. Which at least you get some time in the match to spend to blow her up before she gets 2 meters. She’s really good but the issue more so is just the lower half of the cast not being able to compete with her hit boxes and her abilities with 1 and a half to 2 meters.
Rebalancing the entire game would be a better suit than just banning Chun which would lead to banning the other high tier for similar reasons. It doesn’t really get much better if you ban Chun and overall I feel the game works in a way where the challenge to beat the high tiers is interesting in itself. The problem with rebalancing the game of course is that no one who has been taking 3S seriously would accept it and would frown at any slight gameplay change or new bug that occurs from a rebalance.
Nobody good at the game wants a rebalance of the game and that’s the biggest issue I have with the Sirloin ideology of rebalancing or banning characters in games that have more years of competitive history than the years some SFIV or MVC3 players have been breathing. Nobody that’s good at the game wants the game to be changed and pretty much prefers the way it plays as is. I personally think the lower tiers do a good job of helping you focus on other aspects of the game and help train you to become better and more adept with the higher tier characters and the game in general.
When you look at 3rd Strike as more so just a game of characters and play styles and not so much matchups, I think that’s where the most interesting part of the game is. People who are used to the strategies and ideologies of other fighting games are too focused on things like matchups and balance and things that can only be changed by twisting and turning the arm of 12 years of history. If a game is interesting to you you’ll find it interesting.
If it’s not…there’s a million other fighting games on the earth that you can play that you will find interest in. Including a shit storm of new ones that will get updates when you are tired of the Yun or Chun Li of the game.
i honestly wish chun and yun would just get banned… just look at the last few evo 3s finals.
but THEN… what about makoto? grab => 100% damage. that is fucked.
i dont like the slippery slope anti banning argument. its lazy and makes assumptions about how things are going to be without actually knowning, but in 3s its really valid.
without chun/yun, makoto easily takes their place.
You really shouldn’t judge whether they should be banned based on EVO results, especially not the last few EVOs.
yeah but anyone who plays tvc at all seriously is probably a loser whiny bitch idiot anyway. why would anyone want to emulate them.
yun chun is a ‘problem’ in the US because people focus on it and the community is small. that’s all. are they strong characters? of course they are anyone who says otherwise is just trying to be oppositional.
we don’t have enough players close enough to develop shit enough. everyone is so spread out and the community so small that a lot of us simply cannot play as often as we wish we could.
So if you play a less powerful character, you’re going to be grinding shit out for a looooooooooooooong ass time and almost no one who isn’t super into the game wants to bother with that. You need to fucking LOVE 3S to play someone like Q, Remy, Necro, etc. in the US and actually be decent. You need balls and determination to do that in the US.
Exactly. The high tier characters create too much of how the game plays at a high level that banning them just takes the fun out of the game before it makes it any more fun. Like I said above…a full rebalance would be better but the really competitive players of the game never really looked for balance in the game to make it fun or else they wouldn’t play it to begin with. If people found the game fun for 12 years with YCKM then it should be able to go on for 12 more years that way with people still finding it fun.
Evo was never really a good representation of the highest level of 3S play either. Especially when the Japanese that came to Evo were usually one of the best of the top 3 any way. KO never came to Evo when he picked up Yang, can’t even remember if RX ever went to Evo, Aruka never went, any top level Japanese Akuma could have easily made top 8 at Evo but pretty much never went…a lot of top players of other characters just never saw the spot light at Evo which helped to shed the game in a certain light among US fighting gamers. Then people hear James Chen and gang whine about the top 8 and take their opinion on shit they don’t play.
Makoto’s SA1 is better than her SA2. SA2 is good in certain matchups especially agianst bigger/slower characters but it’s actually more of a hindrance against the higher tier and even specific matchups within the mid tier because the 100 percent setups only work when she purposely moves herself towards the corner. It’s not like MVC3 Magneto shit grab or air grab anywhere on the screen and you die. SA1 gives her a lot of other benefits that make up a top tier character like real hit confirms into supers that don’t rely on landing a s.HP or command grab.
lol, but I wasn’t being serious though
i can’t believe some people are still talking about "banning characters"
third strike is perfect as it is,end of the story
if you don’t like fighting chun, yun or ken then you are probably in the wrong section of the forums
Besides Daigo, KO, KSK, Ino, Raoh & Nuki, anyone else came to EVO?
Back then there was no sponsorships like today so it wasn’t make sense for Japs coming to USA to play the game ON CONSOLE, which is completely not arcade perfect port.
Hayao and PinoAB7 used to come to a French tourny in 2006 and both made it to the grand final. So judge the game based on EVO results is ridiculous.

And MOV used to ban himself once in 2008 when he won SBO with his broken right hand
The Yun army came in 2006 with Nitto, Kindevu, Issei, Yakkun and KO IIRC. Tokido, Nuki, Daigo, KSK and Zangoef were also there that year. 2007 I got to play against Ino in semifinals and I know Nuki, Daigo and a few others were also there. Not as many as 2006. 2008 only really had like Nuki and Tokido IIRC. Kindevu was there but I don’t think he entered 3S that year. He was there more so for SFIV’s arcade debut.
2005 had Daigo, Kindevu and a few others. The earlier years was just a mix of Daigo, KSK, Kokujin…stuff like that. I know the early Evo stuff had like old school people like Chikyuu (popular Twelve player and MVC2 Blackheart player) but that’s all I can remember.
So the general argument is that characters that win the most tournaments should be banned, right?
yes because 99% of people complaining about characters dont even play the game. they just watch streams and youtube videos.
didnt sugiyama come?
Chun and Yun are just really fucking good. They are (obviously) top tier. But being top tier does not warrant being banned. Being broken does. There is a difference between the two. 3S does not need a rebalance. Chun (and Yun) do not need to be banned.
Even if they were banned for some reason, it will create the same problem, with different characters. You ban Yun and Chun, then Ken and Makoto start ripping shit up. So Ken and Mak end up banned as well. Next thing you know, Urien and Dudley are all, “word man, this shit is free!”. Now you have to ban them too… Somewhere in this mix, Yang also gets banned. Where does it stop? When 3S tournaments are comprised of just one character… Sean? Then motherfuckers are going to start banning certain colors. It will never end.

I like Matsuda over EVERYONE, real fucking talk
Hayao for secretly best player of all time in my heart though
I don’t know, Chun’s SA2 damage and stocks and GJ’s meter lenght are a bit ridiculous, but everybody just seems to get along with it. Aside from that, no need for a rebalance really.
yo. stop for a second.
do you like to play 3s?
i like to play 3s. but i dont. BECAUSE OF YUN AND CHUN.
so instead of complaining about tiers/bans/rebalances, i quit altogether.
the only way to get change is for everyone to either quit or for everyone to play yun and chun.
if you hate 3s, dont whine, JUST MAKE SURE ONLY TO PICK YUN AND CHUN AND NOTHING ELSE.
that’ll teach all you hard headed bastards.
its not like no one here has played vs plenty of yuns and chuns already
