What did it do for the genre though? Only thing I can think of was that it made the joystick selling market explode, which was due to old players picking up the game since there hadn’t been a new SF game in 10+ years.
Evo numbers for SF4 where about 1,000 in '09 and close to 1,500 or so in '10. But none of those players when ahead and played the other games that evo was hosting as well. Instead we had the same ole 2-300 players playing MvC2, HDR and whatever else.
So what did it do for the genre? Outside of the joysticks, everything else that people that joined for SF4 hasn’t been reflected in other fighting games.
Eh Darkstalkers 3 was super fun on PSX, however you’d never really see many DS cabinets out there. Well there was a DS cab at 99 ranch before.
If they did make a dark stalkers game I’d like it to look more like Marvel, with the monstrous designs rather than SFIV with those giant feet and hands.
Well it wouldnt have to be 3d it could look like HDR or BB just something flashy to get people to buy it
These numbers are bullshit and don’t mean a thing. Right now amazon is selling MK for $49.99 Amazon.com: Mortal Kombat: Playstation 3: Video Games and a couple of weeks ago it was selling it new for $39.99 This is called dumping the product into the market as to get higher sales numbers so that puff propaganda pieces like what you linked to will be written. It puts the idea across to people that they are missing out and need to buy now!! Also, claiming that a game is the biggest fighting game this generation after it has been out for less than a month is absurd. You have to wait for at least a year to see if it sustains its sales or if it was just a rush of buyers at first because of the hype. Speaking of the hype, for the amount of hype this game recieved before hand I think the 900k sales are quite weak. What has the ROI (return on investment) been? How many copies of MK9 have to be sold for NRS to break even? Mind you that number went up after they were dumping copies for $39.99 @ amazon on week two.
2D fighters were flying off the shelves before SF4. If anything SF4 brought the numbers down. I think battle Fantasia sold, what, two billion units?
Your argument commits the fallacy of “Hasty Generalization” Constructing a Logical Argument
can you provide some data? has there been a study of “sf fans and their buying habits” if you have such data please by all means share a link.
As far as those of you that are arguing about if SF4 contributed anything to the “fighting game community” the answer is who cares. Capcom released SF4 to sell copies. If you want to know if SF4 has expanded the base of fighting fans the best way to answer that is to put up a poll and ask why people who bought SF4, then ask those who bought it what other games they bought. An argument could be made that because Capcom made such a big deal about SF4 returning to the roots of SF2, and made quite a bit of money releasing a 2d fighter, that other investors were willing to invest in MK9 as it promised to return to its roots as well.
so what
So you made an account just to post in this topic huh? Yeah your not the least bit baised in your opinion are you. I actully like Mk vs DC but mk9 is not as good as even mvc3 gameplay wise. The only thing people bring up about Mk9 everytime is their story mode and kontent(yes with a K). Remember midway is a now defunct company for a reason it went out of buisness so they couldn’t afford to mess up with mk9
Besides MK always sells good but so does SSB games which not fighter will ever beat in numbers. Lets just see what NRS does after mk9 seeing as its like the only game they worked on so far their gonna need more than mk and WB money to keep themselves afloat
ya sells dont really make a good game. Take the sims, WoW, and Madden for example
The Sims is a great game, don’t be goofy. It basically invented the casual market.
I will buy SC5, TT2, SF x Tekken, Tekken x SF, VF ALL IF THEY COME OUT
Someone asked me to this forum a few months back and I finally got around to it. I never even knew this forum existed if I hadn’t been informed about it.
People’s arguments that you don’t need a great game to sell great does make sense except for the fact this is a very good game. This isn’t some craphole slopped on a plate so the argument has no merit.
Personally, Darkstalkers was the first fighter I ever played way back in the day. We had a cab at the local bowling alley for some reason. I always wonder what became of said DS machine.
mk9 is a lot easier for casual gamers to get into than mvc3 i think. even though they may have simplified the game overall compared to mvc2, its still more complicated than 1v1 fighters
I love how Keits refuses to post about this on the front page, despite it being real NPD numbers.
HAHAHAHA
There were zero sales in April, which is the month it sold 900K. All of the actual sales were in MAY, dork!
Fact it, SF4 sold 840k in 12 days. MK sold over a million in 12 days (the special editions are separate SKUs, which is why the NPD only lists 900k sold).
FACT.
The numbers from the NPD are from APRIL. Learn to read, then look it up, fool.
It has only been a “fighting game renaissance” for Capcom. Just as many fighters were coming out before and after 2009 if you take Capcom out of the equation.
This, catz get real picky when ever MK news pop up.
This is only for N.A right?..SF4 proly sold more worldwide… given it has a bigger base in both EU and JPN…
Good show by MK , well deserved … lets see if it can maintain the pace though…
You know what? This might convince Capcom to do SF vs MK. That’s guaranteed to make money, probably more than SF X Tekken anyday.
