Milwaukee: Too grimey for the rest of WI

Uh, damdai won UFGT7’s ST tourney with O.Hawk against some good comp like Valle, DSP and Wong. And got 2nd at Evo against even sicker comp, losing only to, oh yeah, Daigo. The guy who has gotten top 3 in ST at Evo since forever. I’m pretty sure that qualifies damdai as having the best O.Hawk in the nation and, quite possibly, being the best ST player overall in the nation.

Don’t really give a shit if it’s obscure or not tbh

In the late 90s, with Pac and Biggie, Bone, then No Limit and Cash Money being huge everyone slept on ALL the Chi town shit, so it was all obscure at one point unless you lived in the midwest.

I listen to rap but I listen to a lot of metal, a lot of obscure Japanese bands like Crow’s Claw, Magical Trick Society etc along with the well known old school shit like Megadeth

I love the old Chi Town stuff, but just because something is underground or not well known doesn’t automatically make it better or even good at all, a lot of the Do or Die/Twista/Psycho Drama shit is NOT obscure because it’s generally solid gold and the best the city has to offer.

Just because it’s not known or commercial doesn’t make it good. Look at some of these indie/hipster faggot bands that get huge like Arcade Fire. They fucking suck, and a bunch of indie bands suck, they’re whiny and sentimental and full of shit but people delude themselves into “thinking” they’re good just because almost nobody listens to them. If next to nobody listens to them there’s a reason why

Just my opinion, but then again I’m an opinionated asshole, so take it with a grain of salt

Sorry for the double post
I will pay to play ST and I’ll lose but I’d much, much rather play ST than 4
Damdai is a fucking beast, I’ve played him on 2DF, he knows every character inside and out and is an amazing player…probably one of if not the best US ST player I’ve seen, the only other person I can think of that’s as good is NKI

i’m sure he’s awesome, but he totally handed that match to daigo.

I don’t listen to anything obscure, except for fighting game music.

Extreme’s “III Sides to Every Story” is pretty underrated, in my opinion. Days of the New’s third album is awesome, but not really obscure.

What about Concentric and Billy Dreamer? They’re good and obscure.

Supernatural was pretty sick at Lallapallooza when I seen him. That’s the only time I’ve seen him though. He freestyled on stuff people pulled out of their pockets. That part was incredible, and sent me into a freestyle phase.

this shit will ALWAYS make me laugh.

Most of the obscure shit I listen to is Japanese in origin and is RPG/game music type stuff of the metal variety

here’s an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTsL7KAKbww

From a Metal/synth cover album of the old Arcade/Turbografx16 game Dragon Spirit

thanks for the shoutout choppie but im pretty sure most people here would hate the music i make.
although i am stoked to be mentioned in the same line as billy dreamer.

dragon spirit is awesome and had a sick soundtrack, im gonna have to spin that whole disc

Magical Trick Society is well known for doing great covers of old shooters…they have another CD called “Energy Force Gradius and Salamander” with more covers from Gradius. Another one is called “Sign Shooting Game Tracks” with covers from Darius, Parodius, etc. They also did an album of Romancing SaGa covers.
Dragon Spirit was sick and way ahead of it’s time with a very unique idea.

have you heard northern kings? metal cover band doing very odd numbers, such as the sick training montage from rocky IV (which i also planned to cover)

Joe, it was a joke. Take your meds and calm the fuck down.

Never heard of them… that linked song was played well but still seems a bit too cornball for my taste (although that’d make sense considering the age of the source material)… I tend to gravitate towards more gritty/fast type stuff, example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj94pPld5nc

Makes me want to kill things with swords and sharp pokey things

I’ll look into some of the other stuff they’ve done however.

Wtf? Was not obvious at all, I saw no sarcasm, I thought we were seriously discussing music…and it’s not like I flipped out or anything, all I did was state my opinion (most obscure shit is obscure because it sucks, hey, I’m blunt), as I thought we were having a discussion about music… a response like that (even if it’s a joke) is just bogus

Shout outs to Big Lurch

They did a sick F-Zero album too. Good stuff.

actually, stuff isn’t obscure because it sucks. stuff is obscure if it can’t reach a majority of the people, which is a good thing. anything written for the audience completely negates its artistic integrity, which is why you don’t hear anything passionate on the radio. people are inherently stupid, and want to hear anything that relates to them on the most basic of levels just to feel like they belong to something. so anything that is composed outside the box will get ignored not because its objectively bad, but because it can be alienating to the listener, which is NOT A BAD THING. i never pick up a guitar worrying about what the audience wants to hear, which makes it all the more rewarding and is exactly why this is the stuff i do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLrPP0vV-6E
you can say that went over your head, you can say it isn’t a typical sound, but its obscure as fuck and you can’t say its because it sucks.

also-this might as well be from a video game.

Well said, Jerry.

Well, let me clarify by saying most obscure shit is obscure because it sucks. There’s a lot that doesn’t. Imo a lot of obscure rap does, and I definitely don’t like the whiny douchebag hipster bands. If I wanted to hear really genuine rock that isn’t written to appeal to a certain audience I’d put on Floyd or Zeppelin, not some 20 something experimental indie band from Connecticut or something that tries to imitate them. If I wanted to hear OG gangsta rap I’d listen to Pac, Kurupt, old DOC, Twista, not some unknown with bad production from some part of Chicago.

I’m pretty opinionated about music and what I do and don’t like but ultimately I listen to a lot of stuff that is popular to a degree because that’s what I like; I don’t know a goddamn thing about music composition, I don’t play any instruments, I’m not a music critic/reviewer…

I wouldn’t go so far as to say it sucks, again not knowing anything about music it sounds like 4 songs being played over each other with no discernible stable tempo or rhythm but I’m not going to judge your artistic expression. It is something I cannot do and I appreciate it for that. I draw and paint so I understand where you’re coming from.
