Metroid

AM2R prompted me to play prime 3 again. All 3 core prime games had such an outstanding art direction, I would love to see what retro would do with current technology.

whatever engine Nintendo used for SSMB4 would be good for metroid tbh. Another good engine would have been the Lost Planet engine for last gen, but Nintendo hasn’t made a console that looks pretty in a while.

I’d love for Retro to make another game, but that’s not going to happen, and I don’t want some pixelated shit looking game on 3ds, if it has to be handheld it should be 2d

metroid is just more than exploratory, there is no game that has ever compared to metroid in terms of boss battles, which have been a one of the biggest part of the franchise since its beggining. The only game that compares to the epicness of boss battles was castlevania circle of the moon and maybe symphony, but that’s a stretch.

I dislike how they had to start following the design for Samus under the suit around Prime 3.

Samus under the suit will always look like that tall amazon type woman to me.

Because Samus actually IS a tall amazon type?

6’2" without the suit, 6’4" with it on.

Tell that to the artists post Zero Mission.

Samus is 6’3" in the official nintendo Super Metroid guide. Also she’s enhanced with chozo dna

Edit: Fixed the image.

I can only guess that’s a joke.

I was off an inch.

Point still stands… That’s a huge bitch. #1 WNBA draft pick and the greatest volleyball player in the galaxy.

Yeah hilarious but my point is she used to be kinda big and macho but in current art she’s sorta dainty looking.

Samus would whup your ass.

The other m one? Without the suit? I feel like I might have a shot.

Other M doesn’t count.

Other M was a damn good game

Wait! I mean it’s nowhere near Super Metroid or even the Prime trilogy, but I liked the combat a lot it felt like a Metroid game while also feeling like something Team Ninja would make, not an easy balance it pretty much turned out to be what I imagined it’d be when it was announced they’d be making the next game in the series. The story is another story…Sakamoto what have you done lol I mean I kind of liked the idea of giving Samus a personality and I was cool with the premise of her having PTSD because let’s face it that brave little guy sacrificing itself to help Samus was one of the saddest moments in gaming, but they really fetishized Samus and took the PTSD thing way too far with way too much exposition.

Other M was a good game, it was a horrible metroid game. I enjoyed it as an action platformer had they put in ANY Metroid puzzle elements it could of been game of the year.

I’d buy it again just for the hopes they get a sequel right.

Also it had an amazing game box in Japan.

But the baby…

Wasn’t a joke. When I googled the image it was a massive scan size from the wiki. I guess it changed to the thumbnail or I misread something. Didn’t mean for it to turn out that way.

Nintendo would love to make money off the Metriod IP, as Samus Aran with just the basic design still draws fans all over the globe. But video games is a business that has a lot of variables. As others have mentioned a lot of the people that were responsible for the original trilogy of games have gone or been moved to different positions. It is also in the unfortunate position of being beloved yet sales like crap in Japan. Nintendo is Japanese company so when their games sell like crap they usually would just drop it but the global fanbase outside of Japan (and the seemingly loud one but small group among other developers not within the core EAD teams that have tried multiple times with the same style) love the franchise and style of game. Hence you have Other M that tried to make things more cinematic or Federation Force, which seems like it’s biggest attempt to grab more casual core fanbase by targeting the FPS space marine crowd, along with trying to appeal to fans of co-op games such as Monster Hunter and its clones plus trying to pull new players with its more light hearted nature compared to everything else in the franchise including the pinball game. Did people really forget there was a Metriod Prime Pinball game?

Anyway, Nintendo is business where their own internal teams are usually stretched out working on multiple projects and if no group with enough pull can propose a Metriod game capable of either, living up to previous classic titles in the franchise (and some of the classic games realised in recent years in that genre on other platforms) or show the promise of reaching a bigger audience, they won’t sink any money into it. It sucks that Metriod doesn’t seem to be considered among their upper echelon (such as Mario, Zelda and Pokemon) nor even a solid performer (such as Kirby games, some Mario side characters like Yoshi or Animal Crossing that are steady on base hitters) by their big wigs that get various and frequent shots to succeed or fail with more classic takes on its core concept but Nintendo is very much a business and they will only go so far out of their way on certain ventures.

Metriod will get another shot at a game eventually, what sort of game whether its like the original ones, like Prime or something completely different is all dependent on who is calling the shots and what they think will sell.

How did you manage to spell Metroid wrong every time in that post?

The mentality that a game must sell at least 3 million to be a success is a terrible thing. Especially when the classic 2d stuff many of us would be happy with is comparatively cheap to make.

It sucks but with the rising costs of making games its just a business thing that cant be ignored. I’d perfectly be happy with a 2d metroid that took place after federation force and was a download game for about $30. I think the only way it’d work out to make a sizable profit would be to give it to an indie dev with a good pedigree since their workers aren’t being paid nearly as much as the staff at Nintendo to work on that. If we look at the last 2d game that got released then we’d see that Fusion sold 1.08 copies in NA but was able to make 27 mil in revenue. That’s pretty good for a game that was made back then but the margins to make a game like that now? Not so much. Especially if it looks anywhere near how I envision a 2D metroid game from Nintendo now would look if they were to actually go in on it.
