Metroid

Oh fuck

And that is why they shut it down. There is no doubt in my mind, someone at Nintendo had thought about remaking Metriod 2, whether it would be as faithful as AM2R or something along the lines of Zero Mission or even straight up have it done in First Person, I couldn’t tell you but it has to be floating around there at the offices of Nintendo. This being pretty much a very good recreation/update of Metriod 2 puts Nintendo in a awkward position as they now would be competing with a well received fan remake if they did release their own version. Much like the fan made Pokemon game, Nintendo isn’t trying to compete with someone releasing free versions of their own IP.

It sucks but at least it shows they care enough about the brand to bother doing it. Now we just have to hope they follow up with something special on whatever their next system is. Although I don’t think Federation Force is bad as a concept, they just chose the wrong system (Would have been better as a Wii U or NX game where you might have a larger FPS audience then the non-existent group that is on the 3DS at this point in its life cycle).

I hope Fed Force crashes and burns, I hope it flops harder than Lebron during playoffs, I hope it’s profit margins are as empty as the promises of No Man’s Sky. It’s embarrassing how many idiots actually believe that they must buy Fed Force even though they don’t want to because they’re scared if it doesn’t sell well that we will never get another ‘true’ Metroid again. FF looks so bland and ugly visually, the game play although mechanically somewhat similar to the prime games looks much more sluggish and worst of all the pea shooter weapon is a far cry from the cannon Samus packs and the level design although from what I saw is varied looks so boring and uninspired.

All the dumb fucks saying FF shouldn’t be judged by Metroid standards and needs to be judged in it’s own merit should eat a dick, if you choose to have the Metroid name to get better sales ok cool, but then you automatically invite it’s comparison to other Metroid games and deserve all the hate when it fails to compete.

Metroid Prime 4 announcement would be…cool I guess I mean I wouldn’t get super hype for it the way I’d be if Nintendo actually announced a 2D Metroid. Speaking of which @Wellman howd you compare AM2R to Super Metroid? I feel fan games have a stigma as most gamers are so biased and form their set in stone opinions on day 0 about everything so there’s the assumption that a fan game can’t compete with or be better than an established classic. Even if AM2R was as good or better than SM I feel most people wouldn’t admit it and just say “yeah it’s good for a fan game”.

I just don’t understand what demographic Nintendo was even trying to hit with Federation Force. The loyal fans who enjoyed the 2D classics? Can’t be them. The people who enjoyed the Prime titles for the most part? Can’t be them either because we’ve already seen how you do that type of game right when Hunters came out. Little kids who have never played a Metroid game in their life? Why would they even care?

I don’t understand why Nintendo doesn’t push this IP in a more serious way. They don’t even bother doing ANYTHING for Metroid’s anniversary’s anymore, yet every time a year goes by for Mario or Zelda they do everything in their power to make sure everyone knows it. It’s like they don’t even know what to do with the franchise, despite fans telling them exactly what we want for YEARS now. Hell, Sega was even making a good Sonic game every now and then and they STILL tried to do right by their fans and made Sonic Mania.

Meanwhile, the only two recent Metroid games we can get are Other M and FF. To top it all off, we can’t even make our own good Metroid games anymore (for ZERO profit mind you) without Nintendo coming to shut that shit down. It’s like Nintendo wants this franchise to die out harder than Mega Man, which is just completely heartbreaking knowing the sheer SCOPE of things you could do with Metroid today in both 2D AND 3D.

Prime 1 is the best selling game in the series with 2.8 million, while any single Mario Kart or Mario Party has outsold the entire Metroid franchise combined…marinate on that.

And Fed Force is classic Nintendo cycle: Release classic game, release experimental game, then release spinoff, it’s jut a bigger gap with Metroid, but pretty much all Ninty franchises follow this formula.

I just watched some gameplay video of Federation Force and it looks fucking stupid.

I’ll pass.

Metroid doesnt sell anywhere near as welll as Mario or Zelda. This isnt some mind bending puzzle to figure out man.

And I have to disagree with Wellman there isn’t anyone at Nintendo that know what the fuck to do with Meteoid anymore. Probably hasnt been for a while.

It’s a shame, too. I consider Super Metroid to be THE BEST Super Nintendo game. Period.

FTFY

True, but that’s not what I’m confused about. I just don’t see why Nintendo seems to have NO IDEA what to do with Metroid, whenever the off chance happens that they do actually make a new game in the IP.

I mean shit, they made Zelda into a DYNASTY WARRIORS game and even that was good.

No they had someone else make Zelda into Dynasty Warriors.

The problems with Metroid are thus:

Beloved cult classic game series which really doesn’t sell all that well.

[] None of the people responsible for its initial success are around anymore.(Deer Force broke up long ago, the series’ godfather Gunpei Yokoi has long since passed away, and Kenji Yammamoto lost his damn mind after Other:M)*

The hardcore fanbase is exceptionally picky and demanding.
These are the reasons why Nintendo is so hesitant to do anything with this franchise… and since they are so extremely gunshy about letting outside devs work with their IPs, it’s going to be a long ass time before anyone actually capable gets their hands on Samus and her universe. Especially after FF bombs… and it’s going to bomb HARD.

My point is Nintendo obviously cared enough to do what they needed to do to make ANOTHER good Zelda game, even though it was a spin off completely different from your average Zelda.

This is because you can throw a rock and hit a Zelda game that’s a million+ seller. When you have that kind of brand loyalty and recognition, you can take a chance here or there.

It also helps that previous collaborations with other companies on Zelda titles (Capcom, not Capcpom’s work on the Oracle games/Minish Cap) paid off very well, including said Hyrule Warriors.

Everyone forgets that Retro Studios had to practically BEG Nintendo to get the opportunity to make the Prime games.

Metroid isn’t, and never was a huge franchise. It didn’t sell well, it didn’t have that many games, and it especially never found success back home. Move on and play the tens of other Metroidvanias coming out every year.

Eeew No thanks.

I hate when people say this shit. You’re the same kind of person that thinks I’d be satisfied playing a Mega Man fan game.

You completely miss the point of why people love the series they are attached to.

Well from what you’re telling me, it’s obviously not for the 2D exploratory platformer gameplay. :coffee:

A Mega Man fan on prom night.

Metroid is a series that could get away with a Mega Man style treatment: new game, same standard engine, similar functionality, just new maps, new bosses, etc. Development costs would be insignificant but still have the potential for good games that the fans of the series would enjoy.

Prime straight boned, though. There’s no way they’ll settle for 2-gen old graphics at this point on Prime. 2D Metroids can get away with that.

Seriously, I’d have paid the $35-40 for a 3DS AM2R. That game was everything I wanted in a M2 remake, and games like that coming out every year or so I wouldn’t mind in the least. I eat that shit up.
