Those are exactly the people Project Base caters to.
These damn kids that can’t even remember to tap down twice are going to be the next leaders of this country, guys…

The one guy stuffed and don;t know where to go!!!

And this is why they don’t design games to be like Super Metroid these days:

Edit: Oh, didn’t notice someone had already posted this in the previous page.

I’ve just downloaded Super Metroid and I’m experimenting with different control setups. I tried it with Shoot set at ZR and Dash Y and Jump B, and then changed it to Dash ZR, Shoot Y and Jump X. I think I like that better. I have weapon select/cancel at X and A.

What are some of the setups you guys are running with? I like how the Wii U lets you reassign the SNES buttons on the Gamepad. ZR is way more comfortable than R for me.

i tend to use whatever’s closest to the SNES set up.

I hear ya, but having ZR as a trigger is pretty nice on the Gamepad. It’s been so long since I’ve hooked up my SNES and played Metroid, I forgot how I used to have my buttons set.

I’m actually lost right now in Super Metroid. That’s good.

I’ve been posting screenshot clues in Miiverse. Playing an old game is fun when there’s an active community playing it with you.

Yea. Playing with people who don’t know how to Morph ball sure does make you feel amazing about yourself.

sup, creator of Project Base here. I decided to Google the hack after it got posted up on Metroid-Database to see what peeps might have been saying about it elsewhere.

Actually, PB is a fair amount harder than the original game because of the enemy and boss AI tweaks, along with everything else that makes the game faster. Instant morph is simply a tool for speed runners to use if they want to, and it doesn’t really benefit casual players or complete noobs at all. If anything, it’s harder to do than simply pressing down twice because you have to hold a button and THEN press down. ;p

I didn’t change the color of green doors. That screenshot was simply taken after the green door had already been opened.

The hack has been well received by most of the people who have actually played it (a lot of them have probably played the original game more than you have), so I’ll have to respectfully disagree with you on that one.

As for the muted colors: I’ll just say that new palette blends and new backgrounds have introduced thousands of new colors to the game in total. Rooms within the same area change gradually as you progress through the game, so it’s more immersive. Also, the tints of your HUD change according to the area you’re in. I went for slightly more realistic palettes to step away from all of the other hacks that opt for super bright palettes, and to make it more recognizable.

Sorry if I came off as confrontational or whatever. I just couldn’t let these knee-jerk reactions go unaddressed.

Hey, I appreciate you coming in here to clear things up. I can admit when I’m wrong, and I apologize for being crotchety old gamer without doing the research first. In this world of Xbones and Online Passes, Super Metroid and its peers of that era are like sacred treasures to me. Seeing someone mucking around with it initially rubbed me the wrong way… but you seem to be just as big(if not moreso) of a fan as I am.

So, mea culpa. Good luck to you and your team and I have mad respect for anyone who stands behind their work and approaches criticism as well as you do. Kudos.

Well damn. Super cool of you to come by and post this.

So would you say Project Base is complete? Or is your team still working on it? Would you ever use SM to develop a new Metroid game?

Hahaha, no worries man. It’s always a shock to see childhood gems being defaced. Super Metroid practically raised me when I was home alone all the time as a kid, so it’s a huge labor of love to go back and edit the game. I figured seeing PB would trigger a nostalgic defense mechanism in some of the OGs who grew up with it like I did, so I like to make it a point to let everyone know that I love it as much as they do, and that I’m not just hacking for the sake of being able to brag about making a game. The constant stream of new “hackers” putting out garbage makes it hard to trust ROM hacks too.

If you (or anybody else here) plays it, I’m ALWAYS looking for feedback, suggestions and bug reports to help future versions along. I still have many plans for it.

EDIT
Just noticed your post, Koatl. PB is still a work in progress and it is very far from done. Eventually I wanna re-tweak the foregrounds in cool ways (sort of like Spore Spawn’s room) and add more detail throughout the game. After that’s done and the bugfix list has been cleaned out, I’m going to organize all of the room data and add more rooms throughout all of the areas so it’s kind of an expansion pack to the original game with more pick-ups, new enemies and stuff like that. So you’ll be playing through the game you know and love, then start seeing doors that weren’t there before, or new sections added to rooms, new passages connecting areas, all of that good stuff.

The idea is to make the game as large as possible while retaining the vanilla essence. I LOVE THE GAME THAT MUCH, YO.

I have made other Super Metroid games, but they were shorter and more experimental, just using stuff I’d learned while making Project Base mostly. Rise, Hollow Eve (Halloween-themed) and Temporus.

I have to admit those other screens look a lot better. The earlier ones look really washed out and dulled, and for such a vibrant and colorful game it struck me as blasphemy. I’ll check this out since i was considering another run of Super Metroid soon anyway and you seem to be trying to smart about this. I tried some other hacks and was turned off incredibly fast.

So someone from hollywood named Christian Cardona who has won emmy’s for his direction of VFX is working or rather wants to continue working on his 10 minute live action short film for Metroid.

seems interesting…

I’m betting exactly a week and a half until Nintendo shuts them down.

Man, every time I see this thread get bumped I click on it in anticipation for an announcement.

WTF!!! Where is the news about a new Metroid game?!? C’mon, Nintendo!
