Metroid

No one is allowed to post in here until Metroid Dread is officially announced…again.

Whats Metroid dead?

Punny.

(In case you’re serious, check the first post.)

EDIT: Oh shit, check out the Super Metroid Symphony by Metroid Orchestra:

Just saw this:

Ex-Retro Studios director and Prime series director Mark Pacini (he left the company in 2008) made an interesting post today. Apparently, he thinks all the Metroid Prime games sucked.

Low self-esteem? Setting the bar way too high? Reverse psychology? You decide.

I agree about Prime 2 being divisive, while 1 and 3 were great.

Or perhaps it’s just hating due to whatever his motive was for leaving.

In any case, he’s working on a 2.5D Metroidvania style game called Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Definitely excited for that shit.

I wonder who is directing Retro now that Pacini is gone. There better be news of their upcoming game this E3. I hope it’s a Metroid.

Now that it’s been out for awhile it’s clear Other M was hated more for how different it was rather than it being an irredeemable disaster as many claimed it to be. It contained most of the core elements that make Metroid Metroid and I thought most of the creative risks paid off. My only complaints are the weak dialogue and awkward control scheme which I attribute more to the wiimote than NT’s decision to include auto aiming. Overall it stands as a rare example of how to successfully innovate a classic franchise, although I doubt many people would say it’s an improvement, it did deliver the classic Metroid feel in a different package.

I would like a sequel too, but lets be real no matter how many metroidvanias there are, we’re all staring for a new real Metroid.

I loved all 3 Primes, but yeah 1 was in it’s own tier and yet at the time of release all gaming media outlets compared it to Halo :bluu:

Other M and Prime 3 love? Guess this is now #fuckspecs.

Prime 3, I like the combat and gameplay in general. A few minor hiccups, but it was pretty damn fun.

Prime 1, It’s good but I always thought it was a bit over-rated. I dunno, I just never found it as compelling to return to.

I really liked Prime 2 when I first finished it, but rewatching some of the gameplay, I can see why many people consider it the black sheep. The game to me is kind of like a throwback to classic style adventure and role playing games on the Nes and Snes. On one hand, exploration is fun and combat is alright, and there are parts that are really atmospheric and compelling. ON THE OTHER HAND, there’s a ton of shitty design and areas where you just don’t know what the hell you’re supposed to do next, and end up wandering around utterly frustrated.

If I had to replay any of the games, I think I’d go with Prime 3.

I don’t think he really thinks the all of the Prime games suck so much as since he was one of the main artists behind the game every flaw that most people pass over when playing the game sticks out like a sore thumb to him. It’s one of the things that comes with being an artist in any medium. You put something out that a great percentage of people thing is completely awesome with little to no flaws but since you were intimate with the game from conception all the way through to the final product you see EVERYTHING. And every little thing that you see adds up and sometimes will make you look back on it and go ‘man this was garbage’ when in fact it isn’t really. I’m sure that given a chance, a ton of games would sit in the oven for damn near forever with every little change that bugged the hell out them.

Nope, Other M was ass, is ass, and will forever be ass. If that is anyone’s example of successful innovation in a franchise, well Ninja Theory could really use your business right about now.

The real successful innovations in gaming are(in no particular order): Super Mario Bros. 3, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Capcom Vs. Snk 2, Devil May Cry 3, Perfect Dark, Majora’s Mask, Link’s Awakening, Mega Man 3, Mega Man X, Castlevania 3, Chrono Trigger, Sonic & Knuckles, and a whole host of games that are a million times better in both gameplay and storytelling than the worst Metroid game ever made.

In 5 days Super Metroid will be available on the Wii U eShop for $0.30.

Also, has everyone seen/played Dustforce? Shit looks/sounds amazing:

This alone makes me want to get a gaming PC.

Yea Dustforce is awesome, and you don’t need a gaming rig to play it. Works on a normal old PC to.

From Metroid Database:

Begrimed is one of the founders of MetroidConstruction.com and has been working on a Super Metroid hack called Project Base since 2009. Project Base is unlike most other hacks out there, as it does very little in terms of direct changes to the level design of Super Metroid - it’s mostly focused on specific gameplay changes to make the experience of Super Metroid more enjoyable to modern audiences, or even those who might have grown tired of SM’s nuances over the years. Here’s a short list of some of the changes that have been made:

No more 7-second “Got Item” jingle when you acquire a new item.
All graphics/sprites have been given new colors/palettes.
All rooms have ben given new custom backgrounds.
Modified animation speeds for most things, including enemies and Samus.
Charge Beam has “vacuum effect” on pickups ala Metroid Prime.
Morph Ball only rolls while moving, and Bombs detonate quicker.
Sounds have been edited and changed.
Elevators, doors and room transitions move quicker.
Backflip move! While crouching, hold the run button, then press jump and hold left or right, depending which direction Samus is facing.
Instant Morph move! Hold the item cancel button and press down. Samus will morph into a ball instantly without needing to crouch or aim down first. Works on the ground or in the air. Quick morphing in the air can also be done by holding L and pressing down, for players who might find item cancel annoying to use.
Shinesparking can be done much quicker and easier.
Boost Ball can be achieved by holding run while in Morph Ball (after acquiring Speed Booster.)
Other edits to physics and beam shooting speeds.
Much much more!
You can read the full list over on Begrimed’s website. Here are some screenshots below for some graphical changes Begrimed has done:

Yea I wouldn’t say Super Metroid needed improving. That seems like a waste of time imo. Also maybe it looks better in real time or something but those screen shots look like he made a beautiful game really fucking ugly by dulling the colors of what is a really vibrant game.

None of that seems appealing to me at all.

Super Metroid Project Base aka: Super Metroid for pansy ass modern ‘gamers’

Why would you mute the colors of that beautiful game? It’s like taking Yoshi’s Island and re-imagining Yoshi as an actual dinosaur “so that modern audiences can relate better…”

Stop fixing what ain’t broken, hackers and go make some games of your own.

Trying to change Super Metroid is just asking for trouble. That game is perfection.

heh…‘Modernizing’ a classic by muting the colors…that sounds about right.

I might play through this hack someday to see what’s up with it. But that won’t be until after I play the shit out of SM on the Wii U. And I’m positive I won’t be investing any further time in it.

One more thing. Why did he change the Green Doors to Blue Doors? That’s gonna be confusing as fuck.

There seem to be…quite a few amount of people who don’t seem to know how make Samus curl into a ball…
