Metroid

For the month of May, Super Metroid will cost .30c on the Wii U Virtual Console.

I am playing Metroid on 3ds, and it is the hardest game I have played in 20 years. easily. old school is so hardcore lol.

In that case, check out Metroid Plus (Beware this video may contain spoilers):

"The developer of Editroid, Snarfblam has released yet another hack for the seminal NES title. The hack is called “Metroid Plus,” which takes the original game and adds to it a few small but extremely awesome features, the most exciting of those being SAVING! Not only does it save your game, but it also depicts the status of your current progress by showing your inventory and all the items you have discovered throughout the game. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!

Pushing Start will now make a map appear. The map can be scrolled all around with the Dpad. It will show you your current location, and where bosses and elevators can be found - it’s up to you to discover the item locations. It’s not quite a self-updating automap, but it’s pretty much the next best thing.

The last two things are a “Wavy-Ice” beam, which means that the game promotes beam-stacking. This makes it so when you collect the Ice Beam, it will not remove your Wave Beam power, and vice versa, but stack them together. There is also a new Game Over Screen which gives you the option to save your game.

Download here.
A few last things to note:

-Find a Metroid ROM, and use a patcher utility like LunarIPS to apply the patch. The MDb will never host or provide ROMs to the public.

-If you want to save your game without dying, just push Start (pause) and then UP+Start on Controller 2 (ala Zelda 1).

-Due to there not being any more passwords, if you want to access Suitless Samus, you must do it the “proper” way by beating the game in under 3 hours. NARPASSWORD is also unaccessible due to this (but that’s for cheaters!).

-Using this hack will also unfortunately remove the story screen, but who’s gonna miss that anyway?"

Well shit, I would have suggested playing Metroid Zero Mission but damn. That is an impressive hack.

I’d suggest it anyway, because that’s a damn good game.

Didn’t the famicom version have a save screen just like the zelda one?

This has got me to thinking about some stuff on Samus too. I think even in the Super Metroid guide
it says she’s what 6’3"? But I don’t think she was always that height? And it was because of people
like this guy in the above pic is why she’s so tall. I forget exactly why though.

That’s a really good pic too.

Supposedly after the Chozo agreed to raise Samus, they altered her genetically with Chozo genes to allow her to tolerate harsher atmospheres. If I remember right, the Chozo excelled in martial and military arts until their culture changed to the pursuit of peace and wisdom. They wanted her to have all those attributes as well, but part of that was passed on with the armor.

Yeah that’s what I was trying to remember. And you know how people bitch about Other M Samus?
Well show them the Captain N comic Samus. Seriously it’s worse. And WAY before Other M existed.

If by “worse” you mean a “thousand times better” then yes.

Yeah I remember it. I have some of the comics/novels still. At least they didn’t fuck up Samus’s design
in the comic like they did pretty much every character in the show.

I really liked the way Samus looked and sounded in Other: M. She was beautiful. I just didn’t like a lot of what she did and said. There’s actually a shitload I loved about that game though. I’d love to see that team reassemble for another shot, taking into consideration community feedback.

Or better yet, D-Rockets and Deer Force under Sakamoto’s direction (taking into consideration community feedback).

I fucking hope somebody is making a damn Metroid game!

I think Metroid is one of the few Nintendo franchises that hasn’t been milked to death… yet. This and Starfox anyway, maybe Punch Out.

Punchout had 3 games.
4 if you count Doc Louis’ Punch out.

(F-Zero… ): )

The only complaint I could have about about Samus’ design in Other M was her arm cannon in comparison to how it’s been represented in the franchise over the years. Her suit has taken very very small changes over the years specifically with how her helmet is made, chest plates, shoulder pads, and cannon but most don’t recognize it because nothing has been incredibly jarring. Each time you see her in a different game save for Fusion the scheme and design for the suit has been instantly recognizable. Other M was the first time though that they took the design for her arm cannon and slimmed it down considerably. I know it’s supposed to look sleek to go with all the other modifications Team Ninja and co made for her but for some reason I look at it and go…meh.

Other M design

Prime 1 design

Super Metroid design

I don’t know…something about the fact that it’s an arm cannon that housed all of her artillery makes me think that it’s should look like it’s heavy. And I really like how it transforms in the games for the situation, the parts shifting and moving as necessary for whatever she intends to use. Other M’s design sort of misses the mark on that for me. Then there’s the heels they gave her for the Zero Suit…felt kind of unnecessary but I could take em or leave em.

If we’re talking about Samus without the suit then yeah…Team Ninja…

I was referring to Samus without the suit. Particularly younger Samus. But I’m a hardcore sucker for feisty chicks with short choppy hair.

I never noticed the arm cannon thing till you pointed it out. My favorite part of Metroid is speedrunning, so I’ve always been partial to her speed and mobility. Hence I like Retros Power Suit Samus more than Varia. Those shoulder pads fucking kill me.

I agree Other M Samus’ cannon should undergo modifications like in Prime. That shit was badass. But I love the more feminine and speedy look of Other M. My only complaint is the pointy chest-plate. I love that they utilized her back boosters a lot more.

I own that Figma statue you posted and it’s the centerpiece of my room.

EDIT: It’s only some scenes in Prime 1 where the shoulder pads bug me. Sometimes they go higher than her fuckin’ helmet. Most of the time it’s not a problem though, and I didn’t mind them at all in 2 and 3.

Happy Birthday Super Metroid!
