Marvel Comics Thread

OK so I recently caught up with my Marvel and have had a blast for the most part. Books I read-

Thunderbolts- Aside from Ghost’s origin, and the art being hit or miss at times I really enjoyed this book. It was prob. my fav. series to catch up with from Marvel =3

Secret Avengers- Great as always, the next issue will be a cooling off issue where they look into a character’s background right? Looking forward to their next mission.

Amazing Spiderman- Read up til the Johnny issue, and I wonder how Spidey’ll change. Funny how the Big Time outfit only lasted an issue or 2 but I hope to see it again as I really like it.
Speaking of which, when did McGarggan lose the Venom symbiote and become Scorpion again? For that matter how did Flash Thompson get recruited to be the host for it?

New Avengers- yeesh at least those 2 issues had some action, cuz all that talk was boring me =P Read up til 9 so let’s see what 10+ have to offer.
Oh and contrary to what some dumbasses may assume, whatever ‘Avengers’ team preceded Cap and co.; they were not the first avengers.

Red Hulk- Really enjoyed the book so far, let’s see where it’s heading now with this arc, as it seems to be less ‘villain of the month’ now.

Avengers Prime-
Not bad but I felt it dragged by being 5 issues. Alan Davis’ art is great but the I didn’t like the coloring. Nice action scenes and humor, but overall I don’t think one would be missing out by skipping it, unless they like Davis’ art, or just enjoy reading Bendis’ stuff.

Captain America: Man out of time

The fact it was written by Mark Waid got me to read it, and it was worth it. This mini starts in April 1945 where Bucky and Cap are watching a news reel with some soldiers, and are then sent to London to keep guard on an experimental plane from nazi spies. It is during this mission that Cap and Bucky get seperated, with Cap being frozen for many decades before he is resurrected by the Avengers, much like how it was in the 60s series (in fact the Avengers team then are wearing their early Avengers era outfits!). Not to spoil much further, but simply put the book goes on to show Cap’s reaction to waking up in our modern times, how he copes and lives in it and a look at some of his adventures with the Avengers.
I personally liked the art, but Waid’s writing is very well done and has managed to keep entertained from one issue til the next.
BTW here are some of the references to the first Avengers stories in this mini
Cap

Spoiler

the team turning to stone and the alien with the ray? Based off the story from Avengers #4 from March 1962/3! Also a cameo appearance by the Lava men from Avengers #5!

Ultimate Captain America-
Read 3 issues of it, but I really enjoyed it so far, the end of issue #3 was such a cliffhanger X3.

Ultimates vs. Avengers-
OK, WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
Issue #1

Spoiler

has it Fury being a traitor, but in #2 it’s Carol Danvers? Someone’s setting this shit up. Seeing Black Hulk again was awesome, but being beaten by Blade with his vampire hypnotism felt like a cop out, then again, calming down Hulks seems to make them less dangerous

Uncanny X-Force-
I can honestly say I never knew how good Fantomex’s misdirection can be; it’s like he’s a very powerful psychic. While I’ve enjoyed the first arc of Remender’s run on X-Force…#5’s handling of Fantomex is questionable to me. For starters, the mother is real? I always assumed she was part of Fantomex’s ‘misdirection’ and if taking into consideration what he’s done in the first story arc, she would’ve been a part of Fantomex tricking Jean and Prof. X when they fist meet and interact with him. …but now she’s real? Ugh, I’ll just treat her as not being real, I mean Xorn isn’t so what the hey.

X-Men-
#7 was a nice read, and Spidey’s appearance on the cover makes sense in the issue. Glad to see the X-Men getting some recognition and I hope it keeps up. I wasn’t all that into the first arc, but I’m liking this new arc a little more.

Young Avengers Children’s Crusade-

Spoiler

Ironlad’s return was mindblowing alone, but the one-shot special makes me wonder how this thing’ll end.

Fear itself-
The prologue issue was kickass and I liked how the characters were portrayed in
FI prologue

Spoiler

WW2 story

I still don’t know the details about this upcoming mini but will look forward to it, mainly due to Immonen’s art =3

Avengers-
Caught up til #10,
Avengers

Spoiler

is the Inhuman that The Hood was speaking to the one that appeared in Mighty Avengers?

Some good action in the recent issues but…like I always say Romita Jr.'s art can either be hit or miss; hit if he’s given more time draw.

Fantastic Four-
"A billion to one…you think I’m afraid of that? YOU THINK I’M AFRAID OF THAT?!"
That was so epic ;.;
OK refresh my memory but why
FF stuff

Spoiler

did Doom relinquish his rule over Latveria? Or was that something from a future timeline? Speaking of Doom, him going to where Johnny’s grave is made more sense than that Sept. 11 issue from years ago, sheesh @3@. So I take it’s Fantastic Family now? Either way looking forward to what they’re gonna do

5 Ronin was…OK, and here’s hoping Annihilators gets better.

Oh and B. Panther as Daredevil? Lame and stupid, sorry. This is the guy who has trained since birth to face the unknown and you he’s on a self discovery quest?

Oh and Steve back as Captain America…well since it’s Bru writing I’m all for it, but I hope Bucky stays around.

I haven’t laughed out loud for a comic in a awhile Xfactor 216 when Shatterstar asked spiderman what his webbing is attached to when he was hanging upside down and they where on top the building was

The whole thing was great…

Also when did M “become” Muslim?

I should really catch up with X-Factor, thing is I may need to reread the entire series @3@
However, I could start from when Shatterstar joins the team; which issue is that?

Everything we know about these two events were all covered during Big Time, the following arc, back up stories in ASM and the ASM .1 issue so you probably have read most if not all of the issues involved. To simplify everything you are better off chalking up both as the ultimate fate of Gargan and the symbiote after the fall of the Dark Avengers when Siege wrapped.

Anyway Flash got recruited because of his military background but he?s being used as a patsy. The symbiote eventually kills all of the other agents they have used to wear the suit for secret missions so they expect Flash to get killed off as well.

Pretty sure that’s always been the case. Her father?s Afro-European, her mother?s Algerian and Islam is the religion practiced in Algeria. In short she was raised in the Muslim faith. I don’t recall it being stressed as much as PAD has done lately but I don’t claim to have read every single Monet story either.

The funny thing is I always thought she was “white” with a tan lol!

Guess it makes sense now that I think about it.

I kind of skimmed through the issues of Amazing Spidey actually ^_^;

Only story I recall reading that featured Flash was in Back in Black TPB, where he worked in a school I think. When did he lose his legs?

Also who is this M you fellows speak of?

During the BND era Flash did another tour of duty in Iraq and lost his legs there.

M is Monet who is currently on X-Factor and formerly a member of Generation X.

Oh yeah BND, the retcon, of course @3@.
So what Monet goes by M now?

They say Monet is supposed to be a genius but I’ve only seen evidence suggesting she’s a moron.

Second story of Captain America 616 was sad for multiple reasons.
Bad Influences ended in a way that made me feel really bummed for Overkill.

Marvel Comics Solicitations for July, 2011 - Comic Book Resources

July solicits are a mixture of sadness and what.

Age of X was dope once again. Cyclops is stealing the show again heh heh. The SHIELD one shot was INSANE! Can’t wait for SHIELD Vol. 2 to start up.

You know what I never got about Cyke/Scott Summers?
It’s like the ONLY way his energy blasts work is by blasting them out of his eyes, I mean is there even a version of him where he has control over his energy blasts and able to blast them from his hands or such?

He wouldn’t be called Cyclops otherwise. Maybe they’d call him Havok.

In all seriousness no. From the eyes, in every universe / reality.

Hi, I’m new to comics. I got a free trial for online comics with MvC3, so I was wondering if you guys can give me sugestions on what I should read.

The Xmen are my favorite, and my favorites are Nightcrawler and Gambit. So which comics should I check out to understand the xmen story? I’ve read Nighcrawler 1-3, some of the new xmen, some random uncanny xmen, and one with X23 but I forgt which one. So yeah, which ones should I read if I’m interested in Xmen?

If you can find it, Captain Britain and MI13 has an excellent storyline with the return of Dracula to the Marvel universe. He has been build a vampire army on the FUCKING MOON! Vampire on the dark side of the moon. Excellent story arc, I think you will like it.
Its called the Vampire State arc.

Captain Britain and MI13 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The last issue I bought of Ultimate Captain America with the whole “God sent a miracle” thing ensured that I’d never buy that book again. The fuck…

Well he wouldn’t have to be called Cyclops in that case, lol

Well of the X-Men comics I’ve read, Nightcrawler and Gambit don’t appear in them (a lot).

Though a good starting point for reading X-Men would be Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon. I recommend reading the following 4 books: 1- Gifted, 2- Dangerous, 3- Torn and Book #4 is Unstoppable.

If you want to read up on some Gambit stories, try getting X-Men Legacy: Salvage. This book features Gambit IIRC.

TBH the only X-books I can recommend don’t feature Nightcrawler nor Gambit , so if ur OK with that I can recommend some more stuff in a later post.

For Nightcrawler at his best see if they have Alan Davis’ Excalibur up on MDCU. After that Marvel hasn’t done a single good thing with the character. Check for any Uncanny X-Men issues by Cockrum and especially the Nightcrawler limited series (that may have been the one you read, NC was a pirate). Nightcrawler was Cockrum’s favorite X-Men and there was a lot of co-scripting between him and Claremont so whenever he got his hands on him it was pretty epic.

With Gambit you should just read a lot of X-Men Legacy since Carey likes the character and uses him a lot. Start about, oh, 2 years back when the book started focusing on Rogue. Carey also did a Gambit one shot story that retold his origin you might want to check out.

Oh, and if you’re new to comics in general and have any comic book stores near you and live in the United States -don’t forget about Free Comic Book Day on May 7 2011, that will coincide with the Thor movie that drops the day before. No free X-Men related goodies but you can check out a bunch of stuff you might like, FOR FREE!
