Definitely Iron Man Extremis if you haven’t read that already. Updates his origin story which the first movie copied, shows how he got his MvC3 outfit and you can probably find it in store for only 10 bucks or so. Even on Amazon it’s not much more. You can even find it new there for 9.25 if you check the link below, currently on the lower left.

Amazon.com: Iron Man: Extremis (9780785142591): Warren Ellis, Adi Granov: Books

Thought that was a novel based on the movie, due to the cover. But sounds good I’ll look into it Sano, thanks for the help.

Not MvC related by the way, just took an interest in him lately. Frankly I don’t like playing him in 3, feels weird.

Extremis is THE definitive Iron Man story. That comic summarizes everything about the character that makes him worthwhile. It’s also one of Warren Ellis’ finest superhero comics.

Joe Casey has a lot of love for Iron Man, and he’s written two superb miniseries. The first one was Iron Man: The Inevitable (stupendous art by Frazer Irving), which I would probably consider the most iconic Iron Man story if not for Extremis. His other miniseries is Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin, which is a modern remix of the first Mandarin story. Eric Canete drew it so it’s pretty great.

Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man is great, too. The Five Nightmares, which is the first volume, is another classy Iron Man story. It’s another one that encapsulates everything iconic about Iron Man.

I liked the first Ultimate Iron Man miniseries. Haven’t had the chance to read the second one. I’m probably blinded because I am a big Orson Scott Card fan, though.

I have to say, though, that I don’t have any love for the Michelinie/Layton stuff that everyone else seems to regard as the definitive Iron Man. Demon in a Bottle, Armor Wars, the Dr. Doom stuff… It’s just too dated for me, with hokey writing that’s overly wordy and thick on purple prose. And I never really liked it when Iron Man’s suit was drawn like spandex, especially the gold parts like for his upper thighs and stuff. Just didn’t look good to me.

In the second movie, when Iron Man came falling down to his trade show they lifted the imagery straight from that drawing. It really is a tribute to how great the artwork is when you can make it look that spot on in live action.

Couldn’t agree more.

Cool, you two are pretty good about assisting me. I’ll pick up Extremis and Five Nightmares this weekend then.

Crazy…I started picking up the newer (Fraction) Iron Man TPBs recently. Extremis was good and got me hooked but I LOVED Five Nightmares. Most Wanted was ok, and I understand needing to follow the Skrull Invasion stuff and have to build off of that. Stark Disassembled was kind of a snore; I felt like I could have read the footnotes and not really missed anything. Just read through Stark Resilient vol 1 and really digging it so far.

I also don’t think I could get into the classic Iron Man stuff (been thinking about picking up Armor Wars, Demon or War Machine) but, yeah, just how dated it is and the 80s/90s style isn’t for me. I kind of feel bad about it, but whatever.

I just remembered another excellent Iron Man story. Iron Man: Hypervelocity by Adam Warren and Brian Denham is really good. Actually, I think I would put that right up there after the holy triumvirate of Extremis, The Inevitable, and The Five Nightmares.

Hypervelocity is all about the playboy side of Tony Stark. Not that it’s about him going around scoring hot chicks or anything, but it’s full of the free-wheeling, anything goes attitude of the Marvel Universe’s foremost tech-head. Even though Denham is one of those Top Cowish guys, the art’s still pretty good, probably because Warren did most of the original designs (including a mecha-influence Iron Man suit) as well as layouts.

Didn’t know that Sana Takeda was drawing X-23 until I picked up the latest issue. Nice Surprise! Loved her pencils in Ms. Marvel.

X-Men Legacy continues to entertain. Don’t mess with the ‘good’ guys heh. Guess that’s what happens when you’re lead by Magneto oooh…

WTF is going on with New Avengers man? Bendis must think he’s writing Illuminati again as he continues to make stuff that happened in the past up, just way worse than Hickman and Brubaker have. Kraven and Sabretooth were Avengers in 1959? Really? Well Bendis said it so it must be so… LOL Marvel why does Bendis have this much power? :looney:

BTW can I get that Avengers Trophy / achievement in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 if I put Sabretooth on my squad? No because of Birdy? D’OH! A well the prose stuff in the back of the book was more entertaining than the rest of the comic. I guess even the comic is entertaining if you have a serious sense of humor about this kind of stuff… :wonder:

Onslaught Unleashed #2 had a big shock at the end of the comic. Definitely not what I was expecting! There’s an interview with McKeever in the book too.

For some reason, I am greatly amused by the umbrage you’ve displayed in this paragraph.:lol:

Me too, I think I’ve read Sano being semi-negative like three times in the four years I’ve been here

Bendis better watch out!

The Thor & Loki Blood Brothers animation looks pretty cool. Looking forward to it!

Why is Magneto name changed?

For a long time Magneto didn’t have a name. He had Magnus as an alias and that’s it.

The entire thing about Erik Lehnsherr came about because at one point Marvel didn’t want Magneto to be Jewish, so they gave him a Gypsy name which is what Erik Lehnsherr is. They even went as far as to change the numbers on his forearm so it corresponds with a Gypsy concentration camp and edited his history.

Claremont felt it was important for him to be Jewish so he threw away Erik as an alias a few years back. Whenever Claremont got his hands on Magneto he would toss the Gypsy thing out. He feels his backstory of being a concentration camp survivor doesn’t really resonate unless Magneto is Jewish. I agree with him there.

Some writers like Bendis, Hudlin, etc. were not aware that Erik was an alias so they used it as his real name a few times in the narration which you shouldn’t do, but it wasn’t his real name. Current X-Men writers like Carey and Fraction are aware of the name thing so these problems don’t show up in X books.

When Magneto Testament came out it confirmed that Magneto was 100% Jewish and his birth name is Max Eisenhardt. A relative of his in that story had the first name Erik which is probably why Magneto chose Erik as an alias.

No one within Marvel comics (Cyclops, Professor X, etc.) is aware of his birth name, they assume that it is Erik. Obviously the all knowing types like The Watcher probably know his birth name and stuff but there haven’t been any instances where anyone has called him Max in the current era.

The entire thing is strange because Marvel already has a Gypsy villain, Doctor Doom… I guess no one was lobbying for Gypsies at Marvel…

All of this only applies to 616, the mainstream Marvel comics. His name is Erik in cartoons, movies and everywhere else. His ethnicity doesn’t seem to come up in those things anyway.

In Marvel vs. Capcom 3 they do list his name as Max Eisenhardt for his real name under his bio though.

Marvel’s been oddly territorial with Magneto for some reason. They changed Morrison’s X-Men story to make it so Xorn wasn’t Magneto, because they had a problem with him being a mass murderer. You’d think Magneto was Spider-Man with how concerned Marvel is to how he appears. Go fig.

No wonder Magneto didn’t want to share in Xavier’s dream…ZING!

Anybody read the first issue of Venom’s new series last week?

Skipped it. I liked the ASM .1 issue and I think it’s a cool idea, but for some reason I have no interest in picking up his monthly adventures. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it though.

Stuff I read this week.

ASM - Wow, Spider-Man SUCKS without his Spider-sense. Homeboy needs some ninja training or something. Well, something along the lines of another new armor suit which is what he builds of course! Awesome read. Very dark for Spider-Man story, but there’s a joke at the end to balance things out.

X-Factor - Gotta say I love the way PAD writes JJJ. It’s not a slam against Slott who is doing great things with him too, but PAD always wrote my favorite version of the character. The last issue he did of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man where he and Spidey had a big confrontation is one of my favorite JJJ stories ever. When Spider-Man 2099 confronted JJJ in the 2099 / ASM crossover was another great one by PAD.

Uncanny X-Force .1 issue - Reavers in the hizouse! If anyone is playing the X-Men arcade game and wondering who that guy with a tank for a lower body is who shows up in the game well here you go Bonebreaker is in this issue! As usual there was a lot of death involved with X-Force but it’s a little hard for me to tell if Bonebreaker actually died in this one. Not that it matters with Reavers having robot parts and all. Lots of violence, Lady Deathstrike and good stuff with Psylocke. Also a great jumping-on point for new readers too so you can test the waters. Not that many issues of the series are out so if you like you can back track no prob.

Young Avengers Children’s Crusade one shot - Wow this turned out to be a great jumping-on point as well since they give you a story before Young Avengers #1 that can also serve as an origin tale of sorts. We see an alternate future of the Young Avengers who become the real Avengers and not everyone winds up marrying who you think they will lol! The story also fleshes out what Iron Lad did right before he jumped into the Children’s Crusade series so it works to set up the end of #4 and #5 next month. Heinberg write more comics PLEASE… :praying:

Loki - This series ended this week. Really good book about Loki’s perspective on past events and everything. Good for Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa of Sensational Spider-Man fame. He also writes for HBO’s award winning Big Love TV show so he’s doing good things. Next up for him is he’s been signed on to fix Julie Taymor’s train wreck that she abandoned to save her “carreer”, the Spider-Man musical Turn of the Dark. I actually have some hope for the show now but not a lot. Maybe if they got rid of Swiss Miss and Green Goblin’s Lady Gaga outfit… :wtf:

CRIMINAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!
Sean Phillips: CRIMINAL The Last Of The Innocent

FF #1 was dope! X-Men Legacy continues to entertain as well. Gonna read the .1 Thor issue, Uncanny X-Force and the Ronin Psylocke book in a few.

EDIT: Okay all caught up.

Like I said, FF was really good. I think the artist messed up when they had Franklin stop Spider-Man from sitting in Torch’s old chair, and later we saw every seat at the table taken. It’s too bad really, because the book is otherwise flawless. It was funny when they all sat at the table with the big crew of people at the Future Foundations crib and said grace before they ate. They had to acknowledge all of the gods, dieties and so on everyone worshipped there. Even Mephisto! Hey shouldn’t Spidey not want to hear Mephisto’s name? Eh no wait he doesn’t remember / OMIT made it so that didn’t happen… Or something like that… :wonder:

Oh and Spidey isn’t the only new member! There will probably be a lot more but for now it looks like the next member is…

FF #1

Spoiler

Doctor Doom! OH SNAP! Hey MvC 3 peeps I want my Spidey and Doom FF outfits next!

Almost everything you say about X-Men Legacy is a spoiler so I try not to say much. You just have to experience it. Really loving this universe they created. The ending was quite a surprise!

The Thor .1 issue I got for Mark Brooks of Studio Udon fame’s pencils but I really enjoyed it. Great jumping on point where they go over the big stuff that happened in the book’s past, mixed in with action and a story that had a mythical feel to it. Very cool.

Gotta say I haven’t cared much for the last 2 issues of Ronin, but I liked this one since it had Psylocke Ninja Slut acting like… Wait for it… A NINJA SLUT! Lol and it tied into my second favorite Ronin issue the, Wolverine one. I wonder how next week’s Deadpool story will turn out.

More difficult decisions regarding who they should kill next in Uncanny X-Force. I’m liking how deep this book is turning out. It could easily turn into a book with mindless murdering going on (and not that I would mind that ha ha me like violence) but they are really putting in a lot of thought into the stories and characters.
