Marvel Comics Thread

Yeah really good read. Article did a great job of putting those connections together, and it does show a lot of character depth that isn’t immediately evident at the surface level. Nice find mIRC.

Cosign. I had forgotten all about that time when Weapon X recruited Deadpool in his first series that the author mentioned. Yeah certainly fits with what happened in X-Force, even if it wasn’t intentional.

For new books this week so far I’ve read ASM, X-23 and most of Age of X #1. Have a few more books left to go. Good stuff so far.

Not sure if it was planned or just a coincidence but it was cool how Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man both had funeral stories and several pages without word balloons. Hickman held out a lot further with no dialog then Slott did, but both were really good comics.

Hickman wrote a little bit of Spider-Man in the back up story in Fantastic Four. He handles the character very well. Spidey on the new FF squad should prove to be entertaining.

For Slott in ASM, I was surprised that he referenced the Spider-Man vs. Wolverine story, the one where Spider-Man accidentally killed a woman way back. I heard Slott at a convention say that it was the worst Spider-Man story of all time in his opinion. Mainly because he feels that Spider-Man should never kill anybody, even by accident. Neat that he still referenced a story he despises. It’s always good when writers can step away from their opinions and approach the characters objectively.

Martin’s artwork really worked for the ASM issue too.

X-23 was good once again. They went back and forth on whether Mr. Sinister fully comes back or not. Arg Marvel Mister Sinister needs to get reversed Midnight Blissed, like you did for Ultron and Loki. You can give Thanos breasts for a while if you want but give me back Mister Sinister! :wonder: The female version of Sinisters just creeps me out!

They did some really good things with Rogue in Age of X #1. Fitting since the issue was in X-Men Legacy which has really been Rogue’s book for a while. She even narrated it. So far liking all of the changes in this new world. I’m waiting for the shoe to drop, like when Bishop showed up in Age of Apocalypse to tell everyone the future is wrong. They may or may not have planted that seed already. Tricky to say. At least a few people discussed ‘what if the world was this way’ for a while, maybe that’s all we get. Hmmm.

I’m trying to hang in there for adjectiveless X-Men because Spider-Man is in it but for some reason it’s still not really grabbing me. Once Spider-Man leaves the book I probably will too. It was pretty funny that they showed a World of Warcraft type of gamer with a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 poster in his room though. :looney:

Preview: Annihilators #1 - Comic Book Resources

Everyone should be buying this comic next week. If you’re worried about the price, it’s two comics in one.

Colossus as the juggernaut…hmm

Looks like this age of x thing might actually have huge shake up on the x men universe after all =]

Yeah, that and Silver Surfer shall sate my lust for BADASS in comics for quite a while. Thanks for the heads up mIRC.

The link was broken for some reason. Fixed it with an edit. Hey something to do!

‘AYO?!’ huh? Cool. Easiest name change to recognize. Now I won’t accidentally call you AOK again.

Lol yeah, everyone calls me it anyways and it’s a pain to type out when I reset things. Fitting change I would think.

They are cancelling deadpool team up? I think that was my favourite comic. :frowning: I thought It was between corps and teamup? I’d like to see corps go away, but with team up, you can pick up any comic at any time and get a good laugh out of it.

Picked up captain america man of time #4. Series is ok so far, but the jump from #2 to #3 was confusing

Deadpool Cable 26 is a must pickup with all this deadpool talk going on.

Finally got ahold of the latest X-Force, more Wade like this please.

Hey guys! Here’s the thing: I REALLY wanna start reading some Marvel comics, but I don’t have any idea as from where to start, I know that there are some story arcs, like civil war and world war hulk, but I just don’t know where to begin, to truly enjoy the Marvel Universe. Can someone shine a light over here?

New Mutants #25 - Dan Abnett Andy Lanning - Comic Book Issue

Please be real.

If you are near a local comic book store (and by chance the people working their are not complete jerks as is the case with some stores) you should probably start a dialog with them so they can gear you towards things that interest you and are available. Just never go on a Wednesday for this sort of stuff, IE new comic book day but the rest of the days of the week there’s usually someone that will help you. For regular book stores like Barnes & Noble and Borders it varies, but if there is someone there who knows about this sort of stuff they can help you any day of the week with graphic novels and TPBs no problem, but in my experience the people their usually don’t know much about that stuff.

If you don’t have a lot of money and are just looking for jumping on points, Marvel is running .1 comics that are made just for that. Only 3 of them are out - one for Iron Man (err, didn’t like this one…), one for Wolverine, and one for Spider-Man (but, this one sets up Venom more, however every issue of Amazing Spider-Man lately is fairly new reader friendly) then those might be good places to start to test the waters. Four more comics are coming out in March.

Marvel: Point One Begins In February 2011 | Marvel Heroes | Comic News | News | Marvel.com

If you have extra cash and want to read stuff that is good and collected in TPBs, you may want to try -

New X-Men (Grant Morrison)
Astonishing X-Men (Joss Whedon)
Thor (JMS)
Amazing Spider-Man (JMS)
Ultimate Spider-Man (Bendis)
Planet Hulk
Civil War
Iron Man Extremis

  • All of the above is really new reader friendly. You can start almost anywhere, the order doesn’t matter that much. There’s lots more stuff I’m forgetting but these come to mind as being fairly easy for anyone to pick up and start reading.

Though yeah almost all of Marvel comics are fairly new reader friendly now so you can start anywhere. There’s always a page in the front that tells you everything you need to know. Start with the characters that intertest you and work from there.

To catch up on the Universe itself I started with

Avengers Disassembled

then continued on to

House of M
Civil War
World War Hulk
Siege

And I’m still kind of lost with how things are. Or like what comics are in the official continuity of the Universe (like X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, which is which)

Really no love for deadpool teamup? You can pick that up anywhere.

I think it’s alot easier to find your way through Marvel U. if you just simply start with a character you like and just branch out from there. Since I’m a Spider-Man fan I just started reading JMS’s run, then branch out if he’s in other books/events with other characters. Then you take a interest in those characters and follow their path.

I think the hard thing is the timelines though, since there has been so much stuff happening in just the past 5 years that it’s hard for new readers to get access to all the stuff. Does anyone know if Marvel Digital Comics have all of that readily available? That might be a good thing to try.

What’s up on MDCU widely varies. Some books are about a year behind. Some go up at the same time as the comics come out. Some books that didn’t sell very well go up almost immediately. It’s really a case by case sort of thing.

It’s good for reading classic 60’s stuff, but just me I prefer picking up the DVD-Roms Gitcorp put out for those to avoid the monthly fees. If you can still find them.

There are free subscriptions you can get for about a month, they last about 4 weeks or so. They give those out at cons and even the special edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 comes with a subscription. You used to be able to get the free trial through the site, not entirely sure if you are still able to but chances are you can.

Gamestop also has 10 dollar cards for the MDCU that last about a month. That’s another way to go if you don’t want to get locked into the monthly fees.

Ha for some reason or another I wasn’t aware that the first 2 chapters of Age of X were both released last week. Picked up part 2 this week. The story really starts to pick up with chapter 2.

Ronin was dope. VIOLENCE!!! More violence than I expected actually. :wow:

X-Factor was cool to see PAD writing JJJ and Spider-Man again, if only briefly.

I was a bit surprised by the lack of Age of X talk on these boards.

I can’t remember specifics, but the story so far is very good, although I keep thinking how the myriad of events that have happened between prof x formed x-men and present could have effected the Age of X world.

I came into the story thinking scott and wolvie were going to be lame, but I still find myself wondering how they will develop in this story. The prison aspect has got me asking a lot of fun questions.

So what are some good Iron Man stories to pick up? So far I’ve looked into:

Doom trilogy.
Armor Wars.
Invincible Iron Man trades.
Ultimate Iron Man (I have Ultimates 1 and 2 trades, but I haven’t read his solo work).

Other than those I don’t know what else looks good. So any suggestions with descriptions would help a lot, thanks.
