Marvel Comics Thread

What? That never happened.
You’re crazy.

My only gripe with New X-Men is the inconsistent artwork. If only Quitely could have drawn all of it! Most of the art is actually pretty decent, except for a couple of Kordey issues (like that one where Quitely’s back-up artist couldn’t meet HIS deadline, so Marvel had Kordey draw 22 pages over an entire weekend - Kordey hate during that time was pretty unfair) and that Silvestri arc. I will say that Here Comes Tomorrow is probably the peak of Marc Silvestri’s career, though.

Jim Lee’s X-Men costumes are trademark Jim Lee. No one else should draw the X-Men wearing those horrible outfits. Also, I think the reason early '90s Magneto looked like he was on steroids was because, as Claremont flashbacked in those three issues, Magneto was reverted to a child by some cosmic experiment (or maybe the High Evolutionary, I forget, but does it matter?) and then restored to the prime of his life by Eric the Red (or maybe that was the High Evolutionary, or perhaps his assistant Bova - I am too lazy to look this up). And while Magneto was a baby, Moira MacTaggart (or was it the High Evolutionary?) played with his genetic code or something, and that’s why Jim Lee drew him with a rock-hard six pack and giant biceps.

Did you see the Tom Grummet pictures for X-Men Forever? I never could stand Tom Grummet’s art and it’s even worse seeing him drawing Jim Lee’s designs.

On a sidenote, I don’t think there are any comic book artists named “Tom” that I can enjoy. Like Tom Raney and Tom Derenick… Always hated their art. I probably just hate Toms in general, but still.

The story’s so bad some people are in denile. Now that’s bad…

Zeph - Alpha turned Magneto into a baby. He was a Savage Land Mutate that Magneto created.

Dude, Gambit was totally my fave X-men as a kid. I thought he had so much style, with the cool powers and that funny accent was always amusing to try and imitate. Also, Xavier had that pimp ass gold floating chair and Brown Suit/Cigar-chomping Wolverine > all. LOL @ Magneto too, that dude was beefy.

I think my love of that era probably stems from the entertainment media from that time. The cartoon, the video games, all had these outfits, and thats just the way I’ve always pictured them(except with Wolverine using that far inferior yellow and blue clown suit). Speaking of cartoon, have you guys seen the original pilot for that Animated series? Worst Wolverine voice EVER.

Yeah, that was a real Neon Genesis Evangelion/Gainex ending there. I know everything is some huge metaphor for something, but still what the fuck man. Then you gotta Xorn being Mag’s insane twin brother from another dimension or some shit…ugh. I like a few select arcs, but not the whole run thats for sure.

God damn do I LOOOOVE Astonshing X-men though. Its like those ol’ superheroic Claremont issues, just with muuuuch improved writing and some truly gorgeous artwork. I actually started to care for the characters. Cyclops! Scott always used to be king douchebag to me growing up. The ultimate boy scout, the guy who puts on hand santizer before and after every meal and made Leonardo look like Raphael. “Professor Xavier, you forgot to assign homework!”. Here, he’s a complete badass! He’s a fucking leader, putting his life on the line and overcoming alien warlords. Wolverine isn’t at the forefront either, which is a mistake a lot of x-books do. He’s reserved; he’s a get a few cool moments every once and a while but thats it, and thats the way it should be for a team book. The series has one cool moment after another: Colossus returns, the BEST FASTBALL SPECIAL EVER, the Danger Room comes to life, Colossus makes Kitty orgasm which makes her phase through the bed, Cyclops busts in the room and shoots up the Hellfire Club, GIANT OPTIC BLAST/“To me, my X-men”, etc.

Fuck it, I’m getting that Astonising X-men Omnibus, and I don’t care if I already have the series in trades. Its right there with God Bru’s Captain America and HitLar’s Ultimates as my favorite runs ever.

Sano my man thay was in New Avengers
But yeah great issue from now on Jessica Jones will be known as COMA GIRL
Anyway great week with DD Cap and NA too bad for me that i forgot to pick up FF

Magneto WAS Xorn. All that other bullshit is stuff that Morrison didn’t write, so how does that affect New X-Men?

And I don’t care what anyone says, Evangelion has one of the bravest endings I’ve ever witnessed.

Brave? Sure. Anybody who could honestly say “Ya know what? This is a good ending.” and willingly present…THAT, well you do get points for being proud of your work.

LOL my bad, too many Avengers. :looney: Went back and fixed thanks.

Which Evangelion ending? The “I’m sitting in a chair talking to a shrink like Michael J. Fox on Family Ties when his best friend who was not Skippy died?” Or “Here’s the great hero Shinji masturbating over Asuka’s injured body and look at people sitting in the audience - IT’S JUST A MOVIE and everyone turned into glue!” Or was it the 3.0 ending that they did like a year ago? I don’t know, I tell myself that the “Shinji going to school with all his friends bit” during the TV ending really happened. Pretty sure no one will be happy with how it finishes unless they end it with Asuka and Rei living together and cosplaying for all eternity so they can continue selling figures of them…

Just because you didn’t understand it doesn’t mean it wasn’t good, though. Quality storytelling isn’t always about giving fans what they expect or want. Gainax could have easily gone the other way and presented an ending typical of any number of mecha series. They didn’t. Instead, what they did end up doing took some balls and some faith - faith that their audience, with whom they had hopefully built up enough trust, would have the willingness and intelligence to examine the story for what it was. Kind of like, I don’t know, masquerading an illustrated prose novella as a 22 page Batman comic.

You’re right. I didn’t understand it. EVA is super-fucking-brilliant and the allusions/allegory/symbolic/metaphorical qualites are totally not pretentious in any sort of way. All bow to the Watchmen of Anime, cross-entertainment media comparasion be damned.

You know, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Bub.

Who’s being sarcastic? I’ve been shown the light.

SO HOW ABOUT THEM MARVEL COMICS!?

Diggle is worthy. <3 wade.

Can we talk about Marvel comics instead of the most uninteresting anime I have ever seen?

Did anyone else see the "iron"y of Doctor Doom time traveling with Iron Patriot the same way he used to do it with Ironman? It’s like Osborne is the new girlfriend and Doom is taking him on the same dates he did with his old girlfriend.

We could. But probably don’t want to.

Fair enough. Doom and Osborne going on time dates? Thoughts?

messiah war prologue! good stuff, really good
daredevil… HELL YA! no mercy from the fat man coming up
herc, set up for good fight next ish… i hope
iron fist, interesting story on an old fist, more excited for next issue
capt america, solid conclusion, namor still kicking ass
tbolts, i do enjoy seeing this art considering i only bought it for x-over purposes, story is fine

all in all a good week!

All we need now is Red Skull taking Magneto back to the Nazi Germany to complete this Mount Rushmore of Marvel Supervillians Dating mini-series. God, that date would go horribly wrong…

Red Skull: I’m sorry Mags, I completely forgot you were Jewish!
Mags: Just take me back to the present before I shove that Cosmic Cube up your ass!

Speaking of Red Skull and Mags, apparently they teamed up to take over America during this Old Man Logan storyline. Would Magneto really be ok with teaming up with a super Neo-Nazi?

On a brief tangent on Planet X/Mags/Xorn:
I enjoyed the story for the most part (I gotta admit, the “X-Men emergency” scene was awesome), but at the end of the day, I’m glad Marvel retconned it (even if it was really fucking messy and I still don’t understand it), because frankly, I find “evil psycho despot Magneto” really boring. Some of his best character developments over the years have proven that he can be so much more than that, and when writers try to boil him down to something as simple as that, it usually falls flat. For me, the ideal Magneto is the one portrayed in the first arc of X-Men Legacy. It was so fantastically written, and proved that Magneto’s pride is unwavering, even in the face of losing everything that makes him Magneto. It was an awesome character study for him (as well as, obviously, Xavier) and everyone should go read it now.

Anyhoo, this week’s New Avengers:

New Avengers

Spoiler

On one hand, I’m really glad Spidey (re)unmasked to his teammates. It was absolutely ridiculous to have him run around with the team during Secret Invasion while adamantly refusing to reveal his identity to everyone else. I miss the old team dynamic Pre-OMD, and I hope to see something resembling it again.

On the other hand, this raises up a SHITLOAD of questions regarding OMD’s canon-rape. Does nobody remember Spidey running around Avengers Tower maskless with his wif-er-girlfriend and aunt? Or how about when he fucking PUBLICLY UNMASKED?!? If I remember correctly, hasn’t Joephisto confirmed that these events still happened, it’s just that everyone “forgot”? Shouldn’t this jog their memory a bit? Comments during “New Ways to Die” seemed to imply that (in disregarding Mephisto’s manipulations, obviously, since he doesn’t remember that) Spidey consciously worked with someone to hide his identity once again. Does this unmasking hurt these efforts in any way? I think the scene was well written, and Bendis did really well with what he did (Luke’s reaction to Jessica and Peter’s history was priceless), but this just really hurts my head. Again.

Sigh.
