I can’t get over the basic idea of Dark Reign, which is the the stupidity of Norman Osborne ruling the world now. Like I understand these are superhero comics and that I need to suspend some level of disbelief…but I mean…MOTHERFUCKER WAS THE GREEN GOBLIN!!!
Are there like any rational, normal people living the Marvel Universe? Wouldn’t you be like…“What the fuck, the Green Goblin is running SHIELD now? Well that’s not smart - whose idea was this?”
And then of course he’s evil and meets with all the evil people and they take over everything so very evilily. Meh.
I did get a kick out of Dark Avengers #1 though, just because it’s always kind of fun at the beginning when you kind of reimagine characters and fit new guys into old archetypes and stuff - like Damian as the new Wolverine’s neat, Bullseye as Hawkeye’s a great idea, Moonstone as Ms. Marvel, etc. Same reason why all Ultimate type books are really fun for the first couple of issues no matter how insane those books eventually become.
And yes, I have to agree…the greatest things that the Marvel Universe have ever produced all include some sort of Dr. Doom/Namor team-up, so I can’t complain about that. It’s like Chris Farley and David Spade - both fun on their own (one more than the other) but together greater than the sum of the parts.
Yeah, I just compared Dr. Doom to Chris Farley, ante up, son.
This is what I’m saying you’d say!
It just flows so weirdly now - you had like 12 or whatever issues of this ridiculously slow build up of Loki’s evil plan and whatnot, and finally you’re here. It’s the big payoff that the entire series has been building up to so far - and so far it’s been pretty much 100% Thor.
Which is what’s been so good about this run so far, I think - it’s that it’s largely just about Thor being Thor, and it’s refreshing to get back to that separation between him and the rest of the superheroes. Dude is a GOD, he should being doing you know, like GODLY things, and chilling with his other GOD buddies. Not breaking up bank robberies and teaming up with Spidey.
So aside from the two obligatory parts with Iron Man (where Thor just kicks his ass, which again goes back to that idea that as a GOD, he’s just a league above these guys) and Cap’s death (hmph something in my eye…) the series has been essentially untouched by the happenings of the wacky Marvel Universe as a whole.
And that’s the way the book should be.
But then in the penultimate issue, where it comes together…cheap Dark Avengers cameo. And they were doing so well, too. Contributes nothing to the story - it’s just distracting and gets in the way of the story. Cheapens it as a whole, like these loser guys are getting in the way of a GOD vs. GOD fight here, what the hell is Mac Gargan doing in the middle of an multi-generational Odinforce showdown?
Like the Batgirl story - she’s in the middle of looking for Lady Shiva and trying to figure out if she’s her mother or not…and then pause, fight some OMAC guys for three panels…aaaaand resume story. It’s just dumb.
