dang you man you serious i got like majority of the secret invasion and dark reign series mostly 1st editon just to hope when i becomes a old man it would be worth some money and i could be called a comic book millonaire that sucks
Maybe in the year 2086, when print comics have been abandoned for decades and our planet’s forests have been exhausted and no more paper exists, a full run of Secret Invasion (first prints, with all variants) will be worth a few hundred thousand bucks. I hope we all live long lives and keep our comics in mint condition.
Don’t collect comics with the intention that they will be worth something for later years because chances are they won’t. In fact the prices of golden / silver age comics themselves have been going down the last 10 years. Buy the books you want to read, the ones that have artwork or the ones from the companies you wish to support.
Comics right now are a great time for readers because at conventions you can get a lot of comics for dirt cheap, it’s a bad time for collectors, the ones who are out to buy things because they think it will be worth money. So you get to read a lot of stuff you couldn’t before in the 90s because they were charging way too much money. Nowadays people are happy to sell almost anything for a couple of bucks.
Personally I’ve never bought a comic thinking that this will be worth money some day. I didn’t care for Superman back when he died so I never bought a single issue. Everyone said that those comics were going to be worth a lot. Well those comics aren’t worth much it turns out, no one is putting themselves through college with the Death of Superman books.
If you want go to the library or comic book shop and see if they have a Comic Book Price Guide, ask if you don’t know what one looks like. See how many of your comics are worth 2 and 5 dollars now. If you see anything worth 30 and up sell it RIGHT NOW because chances are it’s only going to drop in value.
This goes for our generation. Things like Superman’s first appearance and Spider-Man’s first appearance will always be worth something.
The most I ever paid for a comic that has never been reprinted was 75, the first time Hulk fought Juggernaut. And the reason I got it was because I wanted to read it and I don’t want to pick up the Hulk DVD-Rom that collects the majority of his run just yet, still working on the Spider-Man and X-Men ones.
Yeah the problem was that companies exploited people thinking comics will be worth something in the 90s, put out a bunch of versions, covers, limited editions and so on. Eventually when people tried to sell them that’s when the problems started. (Remember this is before the internet was in full force and there was no CGC grading). Comic Book stores will NEVER pay you what a price guide says, in fact a lot of the times they tried to make deals with you like “That comic is worth 10 comics or ten cards I will give you” and so forth. People caught on quick that books are not going up in value, so the collectors were gone, the industry almost died, it was quite a mess.
My advice, toss books on Ebay and sell a lot of comics at once. Be happy with what you can get.
In 2086, I’m going to sell my copies of Dreamwave’s first Transformers mini (Autobot AND Decepticon covers, son!) for a spaceship with hyperspace capabilities and a loyal Archillian crew to service it as well.
Damn, bub, you got both covers for all of the issues? I was never able to find the Optimus Prime cover for issue 1, only the Megatron cover. (I arrived at the comics store a few minutes too late that day.) But I had both covers for the other five issues. Unfortunately, I already sold them all back in '05, so I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to afford a hyperspace-capable spaceship 77 years from now.
I think I sold them for about 25 bucks including shipping, so I made what, like… A net loss of twelve bucks or so? Not so bad, in all honesty, in terms of cutting my losses.
I also had both the covers for the first twelve issues of Street Fighter [not including the Jo Chen (Sano, don’t forget to get her phone number for me this year) power foil covers - those were always too rich for my blood]. The pittance I got from selling those didn’t put me through college, but it did go into my special fund which I eventually used to purchase Absolute Watchmen.
Here’s an interesting and fairly brief blog post I found about last week’s Obama/Spider-Man issue. I wonder how many comics shops turned away potential new customers like this one?
And this new Tilting at the Windmills column makes some excellent insights into last week’s fiasco as well:
I want the Obama comic to break the X-men #1 record for most copies sold (8 million I think?). On the otherhand it reinforces the stupid idea that multiple variant covers = great!
Kinda like how Pacino won an academy award for Scent of a Woman so every character he plays from then on is a variation of the shouting twat he played in that movie.
Did he kill Galactus? Does he even care about major Marvel Universe events, ie Secret Invasion and Dark Reign? So confusing. I enjoy a good Doctor Who plug as much as (much more) than the next guy, but this really was a let down.
I’m secretly in love with these Ultimate Spider-Man comics. They’re fun, light-hearted monthlies with clearly-defined story arcs and they don’t require me to have a shit load of backstory knowledge to enjoy them.
Also, if I wanted to get into Deadpool, where do I start? Vol.1 I would presume…
That was an Alternate Future version of Galactus. Makes no difference what happens to him since he’s not the current 616 one (our time) who is still around.
But yeah, it’s typical Marvel under Quesada’s run. For the most part he just wants good stories and he will worry about how everything fits later. Which will be answered -
A) Within the stories at a later date. You know like everything in BND… :bluu:
B) In a Marvel Universe book = Punisher going from Angel to being alive again is the prime example here which was explained in detail in a Marvel Universe book, Ennis in the comics just wrote “I tried the Heavenly route and it didn’t work for me” or something like that. And since that was in a Marvel Knights comic which Marvel later considered not 616 (Marvel Knights versions of Spider-Man, Wolverine and Fantastic Four have become 616, the Punisher book is still out there in Marvel Knights land) so… The only explanation for Angel Punisher coming back to life is in a Marvel Universe book of all things. AFAIK anyway.
C) The answer will be very vague = JQ was asked when did Joss Whedon’s run in Astonishing takes place. He said before Messiah Complex. LOL how vague can you get? At least he didn’t say it took place after X-Men #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, um thanks for nothing?
Anyway it will all be explained later, don’t worry about it too much and just enjoy the stories you like. In the end they just want to make it so you can enjoy reading Fantastic Four without feeling you have to shell out money to enjoy Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, etc.
According to the solicits, DnA (DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING) along with their current ongoings (Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova) and the main War of the Kings mini are also handling another 4 issue War of the Kings tie in staring Darkhawk called War of Kings: ASCENSION.
I pray they finished all this well in advance because even as a pair of writers, juggling so many books rarely seems to turn out well. Although artistically when you have Andrea DeVito, Wellington Alves, Brad Walker and Paul Pelletier on the art for those books, you are bound to at least look sharp.
I want to enjoy them but I also want them to have a sliver of continuity. Was that really alternate Universe Sue Storm or was it literally a future 616 Sue Storm? I don’t know what’s retconed and what isn’t anymore and therefor have no idea what stories that I’ve read actually even happened. I find it hard to believe that the point of Secret Invasion was to bring Mockingbird back so Clint Barton has a little girlfriend. Nor do I appreciate the “Scarlet Witching” of Spiderman because they made so many mistakes in Civil War. Did Spiderman ever ACTAULLY have the Spider Armor? Did he ever Buddy up with Tony Stark? How does Mephisto even have that kind of power? I don’t know and the real problem is that they don’t know either. Because good writers have written well in the past doesn’t mean they should have free reign on what happens to these characters.
Now, as far as topic of discussion goes: who read Dark Reign and who was the shadowy figure Norman Osborn revealed that was apparently scary enough to knock Doctor Doom and even Loki into submission? Who could be that scary and willing to work with Osborn and still be alive?
