Marvel Comics Thread

That’s pretty much it

I kinda get enough from just being gazed at by Morrison, but I’d so join you.

Woah hey easy there, I ain’t that kind of fellow, but if you would point out the stuff you didn’t find were good about the mini, I would appreciate it.

I wish he’d back to it, I hate the cliffhanger we were left with  IIRC JMS is leaving Marvel for DC, anyone got any confirmation on this?

Nope Frank Cho is the artist after Ed leaves the series.

What did Marvel do to JMS that made him leave it right in the middle of the run?

From interviews, JMS just said he up and left because he simply had nowhere to take the series and wrote himself in the corner. Great fuckin work ethic the guy has. He’s also such a big pussy that he has to pin all the problems of his Spider-man run on Marvel editorial and basically wrote an open letter to get fans to take his side even though when you read between the lines it’s not that big of an editorial intervention as he would make it out to be. (Blamed Marvel for making Gwen’s kids Norman’s but he wanted it to be Peter’s).

If he wants to go to DC, then fuck him. Let them have his non-commited ass on exclusive. Enjoy your Thor ongoing before he up and leaves it when he writes it in the corner.

Marvel editors are too lenient on their writers (read: lazy). I don’t understand why they can’t be as tight like DC Editors when it comes to writing characters (after all Marvel is more character-driven compared to DC)

Ummm correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t most DC fans displeased with some of the stuff Didio did with some DC series?

Now here’s something hilarious- I am told this is from an Avengers run by Jeph Loeb and Rob Liefield; Susan Storm’s navel ring-
http://www.data-hosting.eu/v/7265327/sue.jpg

It’s not even about DC fans moreso than DC editors having control over their craft (as it should be) compared to Marvel where the writers seem to be more in control and the editors just sort the continuity later on.

The Marvel editors are fine and are pretty active with creators. It’s just a few “super stars” that get away with more because…well…they’re super stars.

I know, for instance, that they’re pretty strict on what goes into Marvel Adventures books.

Also: I wasn’t aware Ed McGuinness was leaving Hulk, just that he was taking a few issue break while Cho and (I think) Art Adams filled in.

No I havent read but it is from Newsrama

Hulk# 6

Spoiler

From poster titandeoro

" Ok first off…G Hulk does not acknowledge being called Bruce. (joe Quesada said in a previous interview on myspace that the Satellite’s burned out his previous powerlevels which included his WWH persona). Iron Man is trying to convince Green Hulk to come and stop Red Hulk, but only Green Hulk wants to do it himself. Ares almost get’s into a scuffle with G-Hulk. A-bomb claims to be Hulk’s friend and will help to stop Rulk.

Jen walters tell’s hulk she believes Leonard Sampson is red. G-Hulk say’s he doesn’t care and will go after him anyway. G-Hulk and A-bomb leap to the location where they sense Rulk. The team stays behind to prevent califonira from going into the ocean. Namor summons water creatures to hold up the bridge…etc, ares complains about cleaning debris.

Red Hulk comes out of his crystaline crater…and battles Green hulk. G-Hulk saying now he is ready for Rulk, till Red Hulk takes a few punches and then throw’s a left hook and double punch and basically is about to KO a dizzy Green Hulk. Till Thor’s hammer hits Rulk in the face. Thor then tells Rulk that he will never touch Mjonir again. He then proceeds to slam the hammer into his face and shin’s. Rulk is unleashing alot more heat…then G-Hulk tells Abomb, hotter he gets madder he is while g-hulk…madder get’s stronger. G-hulk harpoons redhulk in the middle of the battle while abomb stops thor and tells him to let Ghulk finish the fight.

Rulk admits to Ghulk that he was stupid to stop thor because thor had him on the ropes and that he probably spared his life. As Rulk lay’s waste to ghulk, basically looking like a walking furnace about to go off. He asks why Ghulk is not fighting back…then all of a sudden rulk becomes dizzy and tired and GHULK tells him that Rulk is a killer and that he is bad. Ghulk then throws his hardest haymaker and knocks out rulk.

Thor and Ghulk become friends,Ghulk tells Abomb he is friend and that rick will always be his friend. Then abomb say’s “why you call me rick” as abomb turns back into rick. Just as Rick is about to tell bruce about who Rulk is,he gets laser tagged by sampson wearing a half shirt and his long hair back. carrying rick away he tells him he can’t be spilling secrets.

The General Ross standing over Red Hulk tells him,we gave you everything you needed to destroy the green hulk, yet you failed. You are on your own now.

The Red Hulk’s eye’s open up bright and yellow.

da end."

Yeah read about it, kind of a lame ending for the first arc.

…but X-Men 216 comes out too that issue had better not disappoint!

Deadpool looked sexy while teaching the skrulls his method to defeat the heroes.

loeb needs to stop writing comics forever

CAP #42 was just too fucking good for mere words

Naw, you can tell that by the end of the previous volume of SS and letting the putrid lard known as Ultimate Power go forth with his name on it, that JMS stopped caring about the little universe he created with Supreme Power, although I am sure some of the ideas he was getting thrown at him probably helped quicken the process. Still for his last instances with the book removes any remorse I had for JMS with that book, the same as OMD did with his Amazing Spiderman run, I could care less if he returned to the book.

But I do wish they’d have done a better job handling things after he left. The current volume, its far remove from the original story and its ongoing/mini status had me stop purchasing the book at issue two and I will hopefully be impressed enough to later pick up the trade.

I have a question (perhaps its been asked many times already):

From which artist’s work did Capcom base their sprites design on for the Marvel Vs. Capcom series? And from where was it that they got and/or based their promotional artwork (i.e non-gameplay artwork in X-Men CotA & MSH, the rest were done by Capcom themselves I believe)? By no means am I a comic book fan, but I was quite a fan of Marvel’s '90’s animated series, and uh, enjoyed the voloptuous design of the X-Women in the MvC games (particularly Psylocke) and the artwork that I’ve seen.

Speaking of “X-Women”, are any of you guys aware of the cancelled Sega Genesis game from 1996 that was set to star the “X-Women”?:

[media=youtube]6E4fEY5CiAM[/media]

Any of the artwork/villains recognizible in this brief clip???

The sad thing is that his stuff sells
Here are some stuff I read today (Sano plz change the spoiler code so that we don’t have to write = for a description, I don’t have to do that with spoiler codes in other VBulletin forums)

Rulk #6-

[details=Spoiler]Glad to see the REAL Thor come in and give the proper beating that Rulk deserves, but seriously Hulk not taking someone like Rulk seriously? Pretty stupid IMO. Calling all those heroes to help out the city felt…unnecessary for the reader to see IMO, and even Namor yelling Imperious Rex didn’t impress me
Overall…meh issue, hope the later stories will be better[/details]

Avengers Initiative #17 (different artist this issue)-

[details=Spoiler]As the Skrulls start taking over Camp Hamond, the Shadow Initiative comprised of Bengal, Trauma, Mutant Zero (who apparently has RED HAIR) & Constrictor are signaled to action. At the same time, the Skrull Queen arrives at the Camp. GIAntMan is enrolled with them to try and take down the Skrull Queen and the Skrulls.
Cut to Nevada, where 3DMan and the SKK have finished killing off some Skrulls.
Meanwhile at the Chandler’s residence; Jocasta appears!
Back to Trauma and co. as they try to weed out if one of them is a Skrull, the whole debacle ends when Trauma uses his powers on Mutant 0. I have a feeling that she is the child that Cable took with him to the future.
Cut to Fury and his legion; where he has a discussion with Crusader, sort of a motivational speech.
Back at Camp Hamond, Trauma and co. attempt to kill the Skrulls, but the Queen manages to trick them into thinking TRAUMA is a Skrull thereby succeeding in defeating the team. You ask me that’s a retarded way to be defeated  AntMan is still in action though and seems to have a plan.
Jocasta makes contact with Devil Slayer and meets up with 3DMan and his group to assist in defeating the Skrulls.
TBH I don’t recall what really happened to her, but for some reason I think she is a Skrull.
One thing that annoyed me in this issue is how Baron is being a whiny old man, that really doesn’t suit him IMO.[/details]

Didn’t like this issue much, the art is good but I prefer the usual artist.

Daredevil 111, Lady Bullseye is :spyfap: This is a very good issue even though its my first time reading the series. This arc is sure to be awesome.

Angel Revelations #5 was a very good issue and a WONDERFUL conclusion to the mini! I strongly recommend that you try to get this series, you won’t be disappointed.

B. Panther 41…was less about B. Panther than you think-

[details=Spoiler]The issue was mostly about the Leader of the Invading Skrull party, K’vvvr and his reflection on his life as a soldier to the Skrull army.
The Skrulls have captured T’challa and Storm and began torturing them, but the Skrulls eventually find out that they were in fact torturing Skrulls that the Wakandian scientists used to make them doppeldangers of the two!
Issue ends with T’challa killing K’vvvr and defeating the armada attacking Wakanda.
I personally didn’t like this conclusion much BUT it did have some very good writing skills from Aaron.[/details]

Nova #17, FUCK YEAH!

[details=Spoiler]Glad to see Kl’rt didn’t betray Richard
Rick checks on with his parents to see if they’re OK then goes to check his brother who has found a job in Project PEGASUS. As he inspects the building he is attacked by Darkhawk! After Rick’s brother stops the fight, he informs Rick of what’s going on and introduces him to his colleagues. Skrulls later attack the building to which Darkhawk and Rick try to stop. They eventually retreat back to recover themselves and Rick is informed that Worldmind could be rebooted. As Darkhawk fights off the attacking Skrulls, the scientists try to reboot Worldmind, but when Rick starts to hear a voice, THE ORIGINAL QUASAR APPEARS!
Fuck yeah this is awesome![/details]

X-Men 216-

Spoiler

More psychic reflection on what Xavier has done over the years, though I really liked that the issue ends with Xavier and Cyke coming to terms.

Marvel 1985 #5-

[details=Spoiler]Toby finally manages to meet up with a hero of the Marvel U.; Spiderman in his attempt to get the heroes to come to his world and stop the villains.
His dad saves his mom and they both try to escape from the villains attack on the town. As they’re leaving; Galactus hungers![/details]

Ms. Marvel 31-

[details=Spoiler]OK this a change from what I’ve been reading. Carol’s dad has lung cancer and her brother mails her to come visit them at their new home in Maine. She gets into an argument with her mom then goes to her dad’s room and talks with him (her father, however is asleep linked to medication and machines). After some reflection on her life and her father, she leaves her family, with her final thoughts being: "If I loved these people the way I’m supposed to, I couldn’t do what I need to do right now…and what I need to do is kill Norman Osborn.
OK WTF?! Did Osborn do anything to her in any of her older series/appearances?![/details]

Runaways #2…not much happened really we just know why the gang got attacked. Hope stuff start picking up soon, but I personally found the art to be a lot better this time around.

Thunderbolts 124…

[details=Spoiler]OK how the hell can Norman kill half a dozen Skrulls that look like Spidey that may even have his powers among others with just a huge ass gun? …and damn was snapping Penance out of that illusion really quick.
Guess they wanted to speed things up
So anyways Norman stops Venom from killing civilians on live TV, Moonstone gets attacked by Swordsman’s sister cuz she almost killed her brother, but is in turn killed by Bullseye who also kills the Skrulls in the room. Whether Moonstone was planning on defecting will remain a mystery  Anyway she tells Bullseye to keep what happened in the room a secret from Osborn and they move on with their mission.
Norman uses Dr. Chen’s predicament to kill off some more Skrulls, as well as provoking Swordsman to destroy a Skrull battleship and inform the media and the American people how he is fighting for them with his ‘reformed’ villains.
An OK issue even though a lot of stuff was resolved pretty quick.[/details]

X-Force #7-

[details=Spoiler]Rahne still goes berserk when she sees Angel, just as the Purifiers hypnotized her too, and Angel can turn into Archangel but is begging to control it.
Graydon Creed returns to office and tells the American public about the dangers of mutants blah blah blah, with later panels showing what the other people Bastion brought back to life are planning for. From that one panel with Pierce, Young X-Men would take place AFTER the first arc. Anyways when Logan asks Cyke who their target is, he tells them to go after the Vanisher; he now has the Legacy Virus.[/details]

Good set-up for the new arc and the art is pretty good.

New Avengers 45 pretty much clears up the whole House of M+Skrulls thing. Jim Cheung’s the artist in the issue though.

Deadpool #2; Way’s writing skills are improving, read it before you disagree!

[details=Spoiler]AWESOME ISSUE! DP convinces the Skrulls to copy his healing factor, but also recommends they have him train the new Super Skrulls that have his healing factor. The result? Hilarity insues! Eventually the new Super Skrulls go crazy and start killing one another even the Skrulls that abducted DP!
Issue ends with DP informing Nick Fury that he succeeded in his mission!
This issue was all kinds of awesome and the humor was great!
Though…I didn’t get the Rob Liefield joke :p[/details]

Well that’s it for now, gonna go read some Bomb Queen.

It’s an incredible mix of different styles. For X-Men COTA and MSH they even used comic book artwork for the character portraits. It wasn’t until X-Men vs. SF that Akiman (IIRC X-Men vs SF - MVC1) and Bengus / CRMK (MVC2) started doing the character portraits themselves.

Roughly…

Vast majority of the X-Men - Jim Lee. For COTA with the exception of Andy Kubert’s Silver Samurai and I can’t remember who did the Sentinel portrait (looks like the same art team behind the X-Mansion Survival Guide from the 90s) they are all from Jim Lee. Just the fact that he redesigned all of their outfits to be the ones in the game is probably more than enough, regardless of the portraits. Except for Sentinel which is more or less an original design, based on an older Sentinel model ‘loosely.’ (Capcom’s sentinel doesn’t look anything like the character Portrait they used really). Then in the later games, Onslaught and Marrow are from Joe Madureira (Joe Mad), the artist behind those characters. Cable was created by Liefeld but he seems to have been more of a mix of Liefeld’s Cable with a bit of Joe Mad tossed in (what with the spear he was rocking in the 90s and all after Liefeld left Marvel).

Blackheart - John Romita Jr. Not only did he co-create the character with Ann Nocenti but for quite a while he was the only one dealing with the character.

Spider-Man - It always came off as a mix to me of Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane and Mark Bagley. Of course Todd’s redesign of Spider-Man influenced everybody at the time. Still, it’s closer to Bagley’s if I had to pick one.

After that it really gets kind of random. Suffice it to say that pretty much everyone has things from different artists and writers (Spider-Man busted out his Spider Signal which he hardly ever uses for example) in their sprites.

Hey did you know that Capcom straight up jacked some of Marvel’s artwork for some of the endings? I knew about a lot of the X-Men ones straight off the bat but after picking up some old Peter David written Hulk issues I found these to be pretty funny, I was like “Hey, I’ve seen that somewhere before…”

Oh in that vid the guy with the sword looks like Caliban, back when Apocalypse made him a Hellhound, prior to making him a full on Horseman of Death. Though I can’t say if that’s just a random enemy type of guy.

Yeah, Deadpool #2 was really funny!

Deadpool

Spoiler

I cracked up when DP told Nick Fury “Holla atcha boy!”

I can’t change the spoiler code, way above my powers. Try asking in the Mod Suggestion thread in General maybe? Until then Copy / Paste / Edit a lot, it will save you some time.

Hulk-Gary Frank’s run on incredible hulk Vol. 2 imo

Is there any reason hulk is dumb again after WWH, is there anything i missed?

JQ addressed that in one of his Cup O’Joe segments. I don’t remember the specifics, but it was basically something like Hulk had to be smart when he was in Planet Hulk - WWH mode and now that he doesn’t have to be he has probably reverted back to being dumb. Yeah, typical BS ‘keep reading’ answer really.

I read Hulk issue 6. I have to say…did Jeph Loeb get brain cancer or a lobotomy? Is this the same writer who wrote Hush, Long Halloween, Superman For All Season? I think detective stories, mysteries or nostalgic trips are more his cup of tea.

The story made absolutely no sense. They never explained how come Hulk reverted back to child-like Green Hulk. Why not introduce a new personality, which is what I thought the Red Hulk was? And the events in the story had absolutely no impact on the rest of the Marvel Universe. Also, if getting hot was the Red Hulk’s weakness, why didn’t he get undone when he fought Shield, Iron Man and She Hulk or when he tustled with Thor?

And the way the story concludes…it didn’t explain anything…

I tried not to spoil anything. Especially the ending…:looney:

With the Civil War, Secret Invasion and the current climate of the Marvel Universe, Hulk would have to be smart to survive. It doesn’t make sense.

Not to try to steal your Mod/Official Living Handbook of the Comic Book Universes thunder, but I think the MvC2 Cable is based on Joe Casey and Ladronn’s (with Ed McGuinness assist) run on Cable. I’m pretty sure they were the ones who made Cable cool for the first time ever, and introduced the Psimitar.

P.S. - ACT LIKE YOU KNOW
