Making Your Stick Pretty: A Custom Stick Art Guide/Tutorial

Hey guys, i posted this ins the SSF4 Tourney stick thread but i thought i’d post it here for good measure. This is hopefully my final unless there is something that needs to be fixed (and if i can stop fiddling with it). What do you guys think?

I think i’ll be using this after I fix it up. This is just a rough sketch.

I’m a professional graphic designer and I must say for people with no design educational background, you all seem to be very aware of subtle little rules that are a common mistake, I’m very happy to see that you all have stayed away from rinsing out photoshop filters, and I don’t even have to explain to you about less is more. Just a couple of pointers, try not to put logos and text bang up next to edges give them space to breathe, unless it’s part of the design when you may have text as decor and have it blown up and hanging outside of the canvas area. try to use illustrator when it comes to text and vector graphics such as logos, work in rgb but press apple y, or what ever the windows equivalent is for a cmyk preview, you’l find certain bright colours won’t print how you expect them too. You all seem to have a good sense of colour. I really am impressed, I must admit when I was at college I was making common mistakes and had to be shown the errors of my ways, you all seem to sub conciously know, seems this guide and studying others work has helped alot.
When I was doing the artwork for my first mod, I found it very difficult for 2 reasons. 1: I had alot of ideas I wanted to execute, one of them was to use coloured buttons to convey the strength input ie light nedium hard, so they went from yellow and increased in intensity to orange red and purple. I was creating my artwork and was adding all these other ideas then realised, that the colour scheme was never going to be simple and tasteful, especialy since I had all these aother ideas going on, So the dilema of great concepts over a stripped back design bugged me for a while. In the end I decided that it would do me no favas if they all clashed and then none of the ideas would have any impact and therefor be of any significance, after all there is always the next mod. SO I decided to use shades of grey to compliment the stick and to help emphasise the colour coding of the buttons, and although a varied colour pllette, it still appeared clean and tasteful.
2: this is my min problem, I don’t have a problem designing for other people when when it’s for myself I get all weird about it, as it’s almost me saying this what I’m capable of this is the best I can do, this is what I think is the pinacle of design. When really it’s justa design to make the stick look nice for fun, I take it too seriously and I think the artwork suffers slightly as a result. But I thnik next time, instead of just asking my mates who are designers, I can post up here and get a more or less instant response and probaly more honest feedback.

Hello everyone!

I’m working on my stick and its time for the artwork. Any tips on how to minimize the difference between screen and print without recurring to monitor calibration hardware in Photoshop CS5? Tried different profiles and color setups but my laser color printer still misses the color considerably.

Thanks in advance!

Would be great can’t seem to find any even after some researches on google. I’m trying to get the exact same as the Madcatz TE SF4 Round 2 tho, not sure if that’s possible. I beleive it should be included with the PSD provided by Capcom.

Here is my first go around at a spidey stick. Although my friend is the artist on this for i cannot find a product key for photoshop cs5 extented. I would like a few things changed on it and my friend is very busy. if anyone is willing to do some changes for me i would truly appreciate it. please send me a PM. tell me what you think so far though. I am modding a 15th SFAE arcade pad.

Just newbie at forum and fight games so first of all a big HELLO to everybody!!!

Please, If anybody can help me with artwork. I can not find image of 300 dpi or more. So i want to ask you How big can you safely resize a picture? Which are the minimun DPI for an image to be use in a artwork? I know at least 300 dpi for the background but i want to add some more image (all smaller than background) to the artwork.

Than you:sweat:

EDIT: I have seen a lot of artwork here at shoryuken made from low resolution images (less than 300dpi). I downloaded some of these artworks and when using Photoshop CS3 and applying “real resolution view” i have seen medium to low quality image…are they still looking good in your sticks?. Thank you very much!

I’m in the process of learning stick and I just got a matcatz brawl stick. Not a fan of wrestling however, so I’m looking forward to modding this baby! Here’s the first bit of artwork I threw together, critiques?

You should a bunch of Kamen Rider OOO Template and name em after their combos instead of just “OOO” like that one would be TaToBa Edition.

Kinda wanted to do an angry/grungy Evil Ryu & Oni Akuma design, post it here too.

how do you do the layout around buttons?do you paint it with photshop? (question to Zenbater)

napego: I used a template PDF for Madcatz sticks I found at CapcomUnity. My browser won’t let me post the link (chrome incompatibility?) so just look for s-kill’s blog and DIY Stick art. You’ll find them there.

I chose to show a jpeg with the template layers visible just for reference but when I get it printed I’d be sure to use a CMYK version with the template layers turned off.

thank you bro!

Any idea what size paper you print your artwork out on?

Legal. You can also try A3.

Thanks

On this thread, there was a link to another thread that showed how to actually mod the art into your stick. However, it’s no longer there. When I click on it it cannot be found. Does anyone know of another thread that will do the trick for me? I already have my art I just need to mod it.
