Mad Men Thread (Season 3 begins 8/16 on AMC)

i think don (like most people) can’t see through his own bullshit a lot of the time, which is probably a good thing since bullshitting is his line of business. that said, i think his last affair showed that he enjoys the power of being able to seduce a chick almost as much, if not more than actually fucking her.

edit: Fuck I saw Thursts av and thought this was the rap thread for a second.

What the heck did I watch last night? Why does this show keep switching which characters I like the most? WHY IS BOB BENSON AWESOME?

This is some strong ass weed lol

Is it me or are Joan’s tits getting bigger, maybe I’m only noticing how huge they are now she has more screen time lol.

WTF is wrong with Ginsberg, is he developing a mental disorder?

for real… hash that makes you hallucinate someone that isn’t there, I want that shit!

It’s great seeing Pete squirm, down to tattling on Joan to the rest of the partners in vain! I was afraid he was gonna dress down Stan at first just to feel big again, but stealing his j is still pretty wack. I’m sure Stan’s stash can handle it lol

Ginsberg has always been a little off the rocker. Was it Peggy he told he was from another planet or something?

hoes out here giving don sherm sticks!

but for real, great episode. i thought they were leaning towards sending half the agency to LA. really enjoyed the political conversations as well.

Will they show any celebrities, it’s the early 70’s I was wondering if they’d show Ali or Bruce Lee.

edit: apparently they already made a reference to Ali a few episodes ago.

well they mentioned the ali/liston fight in passing during the first season and joe louis was in the 2nd season.

Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves!

I like how Peggy and Joan are finally realizing that they should stick out for each other.

Speaking of things sticking out. Joan is still maul-able even in her jammy-jams. Yum!

Bob Benson is a confusing character. I still can’t get a handle on his true nature. He behaves like a grown up version of Tiny Tim in a world of narcissists and borderline sociopaths, which either means he’s Super Saiyan Pete, or he was emotionally damaged in someway that normal human catharsis is impossible for him…

Oh and whoever said Slattery always gives himself the best lines when he directs is right. He was giving that short dude some serious liver blows and kidney punches.

Pete can choke on a dick and die…

betty’s boobs got leaked. disappointing. thought it’d be mo perky.

How many episodes in a season for Mad Men? 12? If so, there’s only 2 left, this was episode ten. Pretty good episode, but for Mad Men, “pretty good” is still like a B+, A- on other shows.

13 eps, 3 more left.

Observations:

  1. I would pay full ticket price to see a movie about Don and Roger in the vein of a buddy cop story–flying from place to place, dealing with business clients on the road, generally getting into mischief. Don by the book, Roger off the hook. Classic.

  2. Ginsberg. Impotent rage will never not be funny. Nor will Stan’s commentary of it.

  3. Slattery’s a hell of a director. He has a way of adding layers to a dialogue scene… the tendency is to go for talking heads, but I think he’s more interested in facial expressions, reactions, blah blah blah. Point being, I’m glad every time I see him credited as the director in the opening credits. Once this is all over, I hope he starts making waves in feature films. He could do great things.

  4. “I’m in charge of thinking of things before people know they need them.” I’d say Joan has learned her lessons well from Don, but I think this is what she’s been all about all along, and being a partner has simply given her a new platform where she can express it. Definitely an underrated character. I’d say it’s a shame that her most talked-about feature is her figure… but with a figure like that, it’s understandable. Srsly, in her PJs? Mad Men apologizing for lack of Joan on the beach last week.

  5. Bob Benson reminds me strongly of Dr. Rich from Community. I keep half-expecting him to look into the camera with a scary grin while his thoughts play in ominous narration, like in Psycho.

  6. Pete is, always has been, and forever shall be a turd. He can’t kick. He can’t run. He’s just a turd out there.

  7. Joan folding baby clothes while cops beat students on TV… and it links to lonely Don in his hotel! Cute, Mad Men. All very cute.

  8. THAT SHORT LITTLE DUDE PUNCHED ROGER STERLING’S BALLS. IT WOULD ONLY HAVE BEEN BETTER IF PETE CAMPBELL’S FACE HAD BEEN IN THE WAY.

It’s 1968. Soon, look forward to oblique Woodstock/Apollo landing/Beatles breaking up references.

You’re a pig.

(Googling now.)

Hollywood once again proving that specialized push up bras do wonders. I commend her on her bravery though.

i mean, what do you expect considering she just popped out a kid.

The silence in this thread after the bombshell tonight is quite surprising. I reeeeeally hope that Sally doesn’t buy Don’s crap.

so many thoughts about this episode, but I just want to get this out first…

Benson is gay! Fuck, its like the most obvious explanation for his behavior was staring me right in the face and I had no idea the whole time.

Yeah, I just watched the episode and found the lack of replies interesting. Big stuff. Sally got a good lesson in men from her father. She is a good actress BTW.

Manolo the Gigolo!

Dude making sure Pete’s mom is well taken care of, hehehe…

It wasn’t really obvious imo, and it was kind of a lame revelation tbh, at least from a storyline pov. They’ve had several gay characters in the past so the whole “gay in the 60’s” schtick already wore off for me. They could’ve done a lot more interesting things with his character. Maybe he’s just a Caligula~esque super Pete, with no boundaries and is willing to do anything to get a-head.

But this episode was fantastic regardless! No matter what happens from now on, Sally can never look at her father, or adults (esp. after she Megan’s Cougar mom giving dome to Roger) again. I sense some really rebellious behavior from her now, considering she has no reason to respect adults anymore.

This level of awkwardness in the last 10 minutes was unparalleled.

lol Poor Joan, she’s fond of a man who isn’t interested in her luscious mamms…

Didn’t get around to watching until today, hence my delayed response.

  • Did they revise the RJD2 theme or am I just hallucinating?

  • Anybody ever notice how nobody on this show ever says please and thank you to their secretaries? Mad Men, as far as I’ve seen, is meticulous about this.

  • I would watch a spinoff about Manolo and all his conquests. It could be called “Like Fine Wine” and it would be a globetrotting adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones. Except instead of punching Nazis, he’s, well, you know.

  • So all Stan needs to gain access to a Peggy-instigated threesome is to visit her apartment? The one where gruesome things are now happening on a weekly basis? Hello, boner confusion.

  • Let’s predict the order of Bob Benson’s inevitable serial killing victims. I’d put Pete Campbell first on the list, but I’m not quite sure. He seems like a better candidate to be one of those later victims who gets the really weird stuff done to him.

  • So what’s Don feeling? Guilty for betraying Sally? Scared that she’ll rat him out? Both? Something else? The shot on the closed door at the end lingers for a moment before the cut. Typically shots like that one are somehow connected.
