Mad Men Thread (Season 3 begins 8/16 on AMC)

I actually found this to be one of the stronger episodes of the season, maybe the strongest. The scene in the theater with his son was the kind of scene that makes Mad Men for me. They really allowed that scene to play out, gave it the room to be the quiet introduction of bobby as a real person. His delivery of “Jesus.” was spot on perfect.

You might have been too bored but Henry talking about running for Senate (after attorney general right?) is a BIG deal for both him and Betty. Don finally opening up honestly about anything is a big deal for his character as well. Not to mention seeing the potential for Peggy to marry her boyfriend and have kids down the line. Dude a lot happened this episode to a lot of characters.

-Who gives a fuck about Henry?
-Peggys part just showed that SHE was the man in the relationship which anybody could have guessed by now.
-Don opening up to Meagan was probably the only thing of value.

And by no means was it terrible. I just found myself checking how much time was left a few times during the ep.

another forgettable episode imo. i agree that pete seems ridiculously offended to the point of posturing. then again maybe he is offended, the guy is inscrutably bizarre to me.

‘post racial’

the party line is too strong

Nah. One thing this show’s been doing lately, and maybe all along, is showing how people’s deep-seated anxieties tend to erupt in really weird ways and at weird times. Roger’s mom dies and he’s unfazed until he comes across the shinebox of the family’s dead shoeshine guy. Don’s fine with Megan doing a daytime TV-friendly love scene, until he sees her in action–could it be that he’s genuinely concerned that his wife is turned on by such a haphazardly contrived fiction, or might it be more to do with misdirected loathing about his own compulsive cheating? Pete’s personal life goes to hell and suddenly he’s super-angry over a comment one of his coworkers made about civil rights, something he’s never shown much interest in before and may never again.

I used to think I’m not really offended by anything, but then I realized that I get offended really easily by willful ignorance. Like when people profess to know nothing about something as if they’re proud of it, or when they say every damn thing on their minds without any apparent awareness of how stupid it sounds. Drives the shit out of me mad. There are media watchdog groups to protect people who get offended by irrelevant shit like boobs or curse words in movies. Why aren’t there media watchdog groups for people like me?

That was a good segment. Don seemed genuinely surprised to enjoy spending time with his son, which is funny and sad for several reasons. It’s also the first time Bobby has ever been remotely interesting.

I won’t say I liked Don, but I liked the show’s treatment of Don in this ep. What he says to Megan toward the end was maybe a little too self-aware to be believable coming from him, and maybe that’s the point. It isn’t that Don is incapable of having these epiphanies, but he’s not the kind of guy who has them early enough or often enough to do more than illuminate his own mistakes.

“she’s the apple in the pigs mouth”

Megan’s mom might be my favorite tertiary character

just to run back the pete’s flipping out, i think it was genuine in the sense that MLK’s death traumatized the country and people generally react by internalizing and re-contextualizing.

[details=Spoiler]great episode. saw the merger coming 2-3 episodes ago, but definitely assumed the overture would be from the other side. also really enjoyed seeing roger flexing that big boy status again.

also, is there any chance that pete’s father-in-law thinks he’s a homosexual? i hope so and look forward to that angle.[/details]

The show is great again! I LOVE TV. Roger King of Bosses.

One of the upcoming episodes is called “The Better Half” it’s either a friendly competition between the two sides, or all hell will break loose and it will fall apart.

This is what Mad Men does…“Oh, this season has been pretty good so far, but somethings missing…” BOOM, they remind you why they are the best and everyone else sucks, because they will take the time to have so-so episodes just to make you explode when they hit that right note. Like a good orgasm, it takes some coaxing, some teasing, some want, so when it hits, it hits hard.

rockb doesn’t know anything about orgasms. male, female or otherwise.

That episode was spectacular, holy shit! I don’t even know where to start.

Roger is how a douchebag should be folks. Roger showing us that you can be an effective douche and still retain all the charm and effectiveness, unlike this festering piece of shit known as Pete. How much can one human being fuck up?

SCDP and Peggy co. (too lazy to look back at full name) doing the fusion dance! Talk about a sexy way to propagate more drama. Cohesive decohesion.

My prediction is that Don will start to feel attached to his wife again and in addition his new preoccupation with the reborn agency will end up ignoring Lindsey Weir, who will feel jilted and probably act a little irrational. lol

well they’ve already set up that his mistress is going to move to houston or wherever the fuck, so it should be interesting what happens with him and megan.

I don’t think they ever showed or said the name of the new agency.

I’m not clear on why SCDP and CGC are merging. I understand that they are both small and want to become a big firm, but the way Don and Peggy’s boss were both talking about how neither had a shot at landing Chevy had me confused. I thought SCDP had a good chance?

No, both were brought in for ideas that would be passed on to a larger firm. This way they get the creative that Chevy wants and the firm size they feel comfortable handling their account.

Hate on Pete all you want, whenever he rails against Don, it’s almost 100% righteous. He is not railing to feel like a big man, he knows what Don is, he’s a bull and he’s going to smash everything in his way if he feels like it. Pete may be a spoiled brat, but he’s smart and he knows business. He was right in his comment about Don being Tarzan.

Oh Pete is a major fuck stick in his personal life…

Ah ok. Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t pick up on that. Can’t wait to see the Don/Peggy relationship again. Those were always my favorite scenes in the past seasons.

petes blowup at trudy was petulance incarnate

Yeah there we go. Things happening, power moves being made, thats what I want to see. lol. Good episode… i kinda wish theyd all lose the sideburns though that shit is kinda hokey “ok guys this is 68, almost the 70s, i wanna see some sideburns this year.”

-Pete falling down the stairs was REALLY well acted. Wonder if it was supposed to happen haha.
