Looking for Love: Ibuki General Discussion Thread

That’s what we get for playing Chun… Though I’ve dropped her. I’m still contemplating going back, I’m not the type of dude to have a sub main and counter pick, just isn’t my thing I guess. I’m gonna wait to hear about her AE changes then give it a second thought. I’m just glad someone else is in my boat.

The problem with Ibuki is not that she isn’t a solid character but rather a par character. Given her versatile set of normals/specials, she does have tools to play footsies, put pressure, set up frame traps, etc. However, she doesn’t excel in any one area and for the most part, is outclassed by many characters in all those categories. Even her “vortex” is nothing in comparison to Akuma’s.

She does have a wide variety of gimmicks, that is true. But her wins don’t have to be solely based on gimmicks alone. She can played in a solid manner (even though she does need to take some risks to really earn damage). It’s just going to be harder to pull through in the end. But that’s Ibuki. She’s just a mediocre character at best.

Double post. Sorry.

Agree’d as well. I’ve always been saying she can play a good poking/footsie game. She’s not bad at it, she just doesn’t excel like chun for instance. Heh, you’ve opened up my eyes a little more to how she is/can be played.

Her footsie game is not bad at all IMO. After watching many Iyo/Acqua (players who consistently maintain above 6000 pp online with Ibuki) vids for the past month or so, I’ve come to realize that she can indeed play footsies (mainly thanks to her Tsumuji). She definitely has the tools.

I feel when it comes to characters like Ibuki, many lose sight of the basics. I start simple and work my way up until I find a basic [solid] formula that helps me earn damage/win. For example: A basic counter hit/frame trap set up that works for me is…

  • cr.lp > cr.mp; this works well since cr.mp is easily hit confirmable on CH (+6) and links into st.lp or st.mk (which can be cancelled into NB, Tsumuji, or U2).
  • Another one is cr.lp > TC4. This is another frame trap I use that also works very well.

My point is… she has the tools to win. I don’t think she’s a gimmick character at all (though a character with a wide range arsenal such as hers is bound to have many gimmicks). My examples above are just some basic frame traps I use against turtles. Her vortex may not be too strong but it’s still a viable mix up that leaves her at a favorable position (up close) whether opponent guesses right or wrong.

We just have to experiment and try new things. Remember, I’m not saying she’s a good character, but in a game as balanced and forgiving as SFIV, she’s as good as any character to win.

Anyway, I’ll probably start to contribute more to this thread since I’ve just recently picked her up again as a secondary (maybe main, depending on how well it works out for me).

Since when did people start thinking Ibuki wasn’t a good character?

People weren’t thinking she was a bad character, people were just thinking she had balls footsies a while back.

I agree with this as well for the most part. Just to be a little more clear on my statement. Solid is how she competes, gimmicks are just what edge out that tourney win at high levels and make her stand out/ be feared imo. Like you said, she’s not particualrly good at any of the fundamentals of SF…but she has tons of “shenanigans”. I wouldn’t even call alot of them gimmicks is in they’re more solid then her footsies and pretty much make her who she is.

I don’t like it when people compare her vortex to Akuma’s like being a step below Akuma is a bad thing. Nobody has as good a vortex as Akuma…but Ibuki’s right on his coat tails. It’s actually waaaay more dyamic than people realize and can deal more damage/stun than Akumas. She has some pretty nasty frame traps as well. C.lp opens up so much in that department. I won’t go into too much but s.lk > mk hit confirm is nice.

Dime: You can post some of the stuff I sent you if you want just to spice up the Ibuki forums. Maybe it’ll open up some good discussions and brainstorming. I’ve since learned some more stuff and will add/ make corrections when I get some more time

I’d love to hear some stuff you’ve discovered tempest, it might actually give me a better idea of different ways she can be played. I’ve been playing her since release, but I don’t think I’ve gotten anywhere with her and have just been generally improving as a player.

@ Tempest.

Well said. I see what you’re saying now and agree as well. I also liked your comparison of Ibuki’s vortex to that of Akumas. Never looked at it that way but you’re absolutely right. The reward for you opponent guessing wrong is huge damage output + reset of the situation. I revoke my statement about Ibuki’s vortex being “nothing” in comparison to Akuma’s.

@Jordunable

If you’re having trouble understanding your character, my advice would be to start over. Look over the properties of all her moves (strength, range, frame data, etc.) and work your way up again. Distinguish the utilities of each move. And just remember to stick to the basics and keep it simple. You don’t need to incorporate a certain formula used by [insert player name here] into your play style if your already existing style/formula works. In other words, you should come up with your own way of playing her. You can obviously borrow tools from other players, but be original. I struggled with a similar dilemma with Cammy. I felt that I had stagnated due to not “getting” the character. In the end, it’s really all about the basics, keeping it simple and coming up with your own way to play a character.

I don’t know, just my two cents. Of course, borrowing and learning from others is never a bad thing and can only do you good. Just remember the way **you **wanna play Ibuki, not how Ibuki “should” be played.

THIS. ive been wanting to get back into learning ibuki for the longest time but havent due to nothing but lazyness. i played some endless with her yesterday and lost 15 times in a row ha ha. my mind just drew a blank when ever i blocked things/baited whiffs etc. gotta hit training mode soon.

AWWWW MAN i dint think it could happen since im absolutely shit at airdashing games… but im actually REALLY hyped for mvc3 arthur looks sick, his stage is badass. this vid makes me WANT NOW!

Haha. I’m mostly looking forward to C. Viper, Akuma and Spiderman, if the rumors are true. I may also learn chun li and have her in my team to replace Akuma. It’s just C.viper in a marvel game would be SICK.

A solid reversal for Ibuki would solve a lot of her problems.

This. Short Kazegiri with a better start-up would keep her comparable with Akuma; she dies too fast with a way too avoidable Vortex to be a low-health character as she is. sigh at least she has air grab and Raida…

Random note, OS Ultra 2 is fucking godlike

@tempest

What situations are you using s.lk > s.mk hit confirm?
It just seems to me that either s.lp, c.lk or c.lp would be more suited

Yeah lol, I seen your vid. It’s neat how it rapes EX soul spiral, good shit Niko.

It would seems that way, but s.lk has a very evasive hitbox (very hard to lowpoke/throw her out of it since she leans back sticking one leg out) and it being a little slower works well for catching crouch tech during startup. Try to use it at kara throw range as if it were a tech jump and you’ll see what I mean.

Jordunable: Man I’ve got tons lol. A good one I’ll share is a tip on linking c.lp > ageman(1 hit) > spinkicks. Input the motion like this c.lp, QCB(hold back) MP~LK/MK. You’ll get spinkicks instead of penguin kicks everytime using this method. This actually opens up ibukis game alot…allowing you to get some really big damage on crouching opponents and characters with funky hitboxes by forcing them to stand.

^^that shit is gdlk.
