LoL (League of Legends) thread *UPDATED 12/10/2009*

Tip of the Day:

Check out the @Morello Thread at the Official LoL Forums.

It’s true that like most (but not all) official game forums, the LoL forums tend to be loaded with junk… But this thread is a great read if you’re curious about developer opinions and ideas for rebalancing characters and items in this game. Morello is the Lead Champion Designer.

When I read this thread, I don’t read all of it, I start with the last page and I work my way towards the front page (to the last post I had read) and I only read the red posts, particularly Morello’s replies. Side note: sounds like he’s a big Tekken fan and he is as hyped for Guild Wars 2 as I am (I was not at all hyped for the game until I saw it at PAX two weeks ago, where I considered it the game of the show by a longshot).

Though DotA has been around a long time to rebalance its roster over many years of iterative tweaks, LoL is a very different game that made some major differences and maybe (I wouldn’t know) implemented very different character design philophies. As has been normal in this genre, there will always be tweaks made to the roster on a very frequent basis, and there are major kinks to work out on just the balancing issue. I find this thread a great read with respect to all of that

Update: Well no wonder he’s hyped for GW2, he did some work on it. But seriously, Guild Wars 2 looks amazing live.

The Sona Champion Spotlight is out. I’m in love.

That’s right, I think she’s going to be released either tomorrow or Friday (pretty sure it’s tomorrow)!

And the Riot staff seem to really love this one. Nice to have more support

Update: Just watched the spotlight and I really like it! I think I might be crazy enough to pick her up this week and move her up near the top of my “next character to learn” list. Also, I love the tips on Clairvoyance. There are threads and articles out there (none really that easy to find unless you’ve already found them), but it’s great to take time to tell more players “this is where you should target clairvoyance for better scouting.” HOWEVER, I’m wondering if I should learn Soraka first… Better able to survive (I think for two weeks, I would probably end up feeding as Sona a lot) and it would be my first real support character.

Just went 1/14 with Yi since my team wanted me to tank and was yelling at me because Yi couldn’t tank. Awesome.

I had some pretty good games with Nunu tonight. AP Nunu with a 9/0/21 build is still a pretty beastly tank as long as you have banshees veil. His harrasement early game is top notch too. His E puts the hurt on squishy characters. Sona is looking really good . I love Support champions. I just wish I had enough IP to buy her instead of having to go nuts and pay for RP.

…and the game after, I raped because my team didn’t expect me to tank. Took 12 buildings by myself lol.

Don’t worry too much about it, Sona is pretty easy to play. Just get used to stance dancing, keeping track of your passive, and learn to position yourself properly for team fights.

The first two you’re not going to learn by playing Soraka, the third you’d learn faster by playing Sona or Janna. You’ll get used to it all very quickly anyway, I’ve seen "third game as Sona"s do some crazy kiting.

If anything you’re going to feed for not having a proper rune page set up for her, not because you have no experience playing her

I hope she comes out tomorrow… that would make up for BB and its Valkenhayn mishap… for me, anyway. I think she will come out Wednesday though. The past 3 champions have come out on a Wednesday IIRC.

I just looked at her skins and I don’t like either of them. x_x I was hoping for a DJ/ravegirl skin with turntables.

DJ/Ravegirl skin – AWESOME IDEA! Man I hope they do that

Sleazoid, thanks a lot for the tips!

Yeah I hope so. Even if it is a $20 Legendary skin I would totally buy it. You don’t know how hyped I am for this Bard champion! :stuck_out_tongue:

I was just in a match where I sucked as Vlad. I swear I’m getting worse and worse as the days go on. I’ve been playing too much Street Fighter recently lol.

Here are the patch notes for the Sora update. The game is scheduled to be back up at 11am (this one’s a long maintenance period, but 11am is probably a more realistic goal anyways given the recent server load and issues).

Here are the general client/game stuff (there are also a lot of champion and item specific stuff and of course the release of Sona):

It is good to know that they are working on the client itself. It has been really atrocious lately.

**# Sheen proc damage raised to 100% from 80%

Trinity Force proc damage raised to 150% from 130%**

Ah yeah,
LET’S GO NASUS.

That Manamune nerf is dumb. The increase gold cost is understandable but the both a nerf to the damage & the Mana gain. One of the nerfs would have been fine but both were complete & total overkill.

Tip of the Day (Beginners like myself):

Today’s theme is seeking knowledge (it isn’t understanding until you’ve applied it and figured it out well enough, and it isn’t wisdom until you’re a pro that’s turned it into part of your instincts).

Check out this link. It’s Gamereplays.org’s LoL Strategy section and it’s geared towards beginners.

As with fighting games, the strong players will fish their information from various sources and forums. But for beginners, it’s nice to have a depot of common skills and techniques. And currently, the LoL information is available but not easy to find. So this is a decent second stop imo.

Here are a couple of general resources. None of them are the be-all end-all of information for LoL:

Moba Fire
I like this site, personally. Clean interface, I’ve probably found better builds here than at League Craft but that really depends on the community more than anything.

League Craft
This place is decent for getting an idea of how different people are playing their characters. But just because a build is popular doesn’t always mean it’s the best one (sometimes it does too). Pay attention to the version numbers.

Runeterra
I’ve found some interesting, if sometimes overreaching, articles here and I have a sense that this place has a great balance of community, opinions, and even developer contact. I’m checking it more often these days.

Solo Mid
Found good detailed information here from time to time. The people that write here sound very competitive though.

About the Wiki’s (Wikia and CompleteLoL)
I haven’t found them to be as good for LoL as they are for some other games. They aren’t bad, but they feel like they’re not updated as quickly and I’m not always finding what I’m looking for. Part of it is because things aren’t always so cut and dry in LoL and so an “encyclopedia” isn’t quite your best resource for insight in how to play as opposed to knowing traits and stats. Wiki’s are awesome for games like the Monster Hunter series (the Monster Hunter Wikia is just awesome), but they’ve rarely been the best way to handle competitive games until you break those games into a science. And LoL has not been broken down into a science yet, as far as I can tell.

Another place to check out for players of various skills (probably the better players) is the new blog section of SoloMid.Net. I haven’t spent too much time at SoloMid, though I’m guessing there is a little bit of eliticism there, but that happens all the time for all games anyhow.

-Chanchai

Thanks for the links! I go to Leaguecraft sometimes under my Summoner name (Nakigahara).

I’m loving Sona right now. Has anyone else tried her out?

Also is it just me or is the client still extremely bad? I can’t type anything in chat without it lagging for 10 years and the Invite function doesn’t work all the time. In-game is fine though so I guess it’s not THAT big of a deal.

I can’t wait to get Sona~

Client is still bad. There’s a link (I think in this thread even) for an alternate client that someone put together and posted on the EU forums. The common theory is that the source of the resource hogging from the client is Adobe Air, which was used to make the client (not the game). Adobe released some patch not long ago and after that, a variety of Air apps just started handling processor management horribly. I’ve also heard Riot mentioning a standalone client, but not sure exactly what separates it from the current launcher client.

Picked up Sona but probably won’t play her until later this week. Fought against her and she really brings the goods to the team. My team won, but I think because we had a better coordinated team. One of the better fights happened when I sacrificed myself early on to kill Sona (succeeded thank goodness), that did lead to us being able to push. But that Sona was positioning herself well and her team was doing a good job protecting her usually. I don’t think she’s OP’d at all, but I do think she’s going to change the dynamics of a lot of matches. Then again, I’m not playing ranked stuff so we’ll see how that goes

BTW, np for the links. Just loving this game too much and enjoying all the chat it’s inspired too

Did anyone else check this out?
Server Stability Round 3
Riot is implementing a couple of new measures to deal with the stability issue that’s been happening the last couple of weeks and also to keep the community informed.

  • There’s now a ticker that keeps players in the game informed of the server’s status.
  • Riot now has a server side feature they call “The Button” which basically mitigates negative effects to accounts when server problems get out of hand and are likely to cause abnormal game losses. Players will not know when “The Button” is in effect, but basically what will happen is you will not lose your ELO Points or spot in ladder. You will also still gain XP/IP to some amount.

I been doing 2v1 with Sion really well, but when I do 1v1 I am not as good. I think Im too aggresive when there is one person to fight. Often (when playing good teams) i will find myself going a tiny bit too far and fall for a gank.
Sions shield is so fun. I love running up to a crap load of minions and destroying them all in one explosive hit. My favorite though is stuning someone and walking very slowly toward them knowing there is nothing the can do about it and shield blasting their ass.

Jungle Tryndamere is legit. More so than Jungle Rammus, anyway.
