Let Me Know When the Fight Starts!: The MvC3 X-23 Video Thread

We were streaming at the Ga Tech gathering last night:

Justin.tv - FunkyP’s GT Friday Fighting Variety - Muti-grain pringles! Get somewhat hype!

That’s me on the mic for the majority of part 2, I start playing around 1:45:00 (of Part 2) and there’s a good hour or so of my X-23 in there. I’m not THAT good or anything and I was getting predictable, but hopefully you see some stuff in here that you like. I need to learn how to block, though, haha. (Also, forgive me if you are a Tron player, my Tron was atrocious last night lol)

Also if you have any suggestions please let me know, I definitely want to step up my X-23 game.

I found that doing a dash into a TKed Dive Kick catches a lot of people by surprise more often than not. This is an overkill combo but you could split the entire combo into 2.
1.Weapon X Prime into Mist (DHC reset)
2.Okami Shuffle into Weapon X Prime into Weskers Super Counter (DHC reset)

Few casuals pre-tourney at the start of this: Justin.tv - FunkyP’s GT Friday Fighting Variety - Battle & Brew Monthly MvC3 Tournament 4/7

And I lose to Phoenix at the 52 minute mark here: Justin.tv - FunkyP’s GT Friday Fighting Variety - Battle & Brew Monthly MvC3 Tournament 4/7

Well the one thing I’ll say for sure is that I really like your team a lot and think it has a lot of potential. Your team doesn’t really do much to add to the mix up potential of X23 but now that I know more about 23 I think she’s pretty self sufficient with all of the left right mix ups and how she’s just a frame trap beast. There were a few things you could definitely work on though.

1. Work on making your bnbs more consistent. I know you’re not really trying to go for like all the feint cancel stuff yet but like even with your standard ABC launch bnbs you tend to jump too early after the launch and it causes you to miss the air juggle afterwards.

2. Definitely try to start at least how to combo into Weapon X off bnbs and DHC resetting into Ammy’s slow super. This will reset the damage and give you hella big damage when you learn how to do the slow loop with Ammy after she comes in. This doesn’t force you to burn your X Factor like the day one rage trigger x 2 stuff. The best way you’re going to get to combo into Weapon X is basically call Ammy or Tron before you do the charged ankle slice so they pop the opponent high enough in the air to land the Weapon X. I wouldn’t really recommend comboing into rage trigger unless X23 is the only person left on the team where you have no choice. As long as you have an assist that can pop people up after your OTG definitely run Weapon X.

**3. Never burn your X Factor against Phoenix until she actually begins to fight you as D.Phoenix. ** If you’re fighting against a Phoenix team they are going to be holding off meter for Phoenix so they wont be very scary damage wise. Which will give you room to go in and hit them with stuff without worrying about X23 dying in one combo. Which on top of that you can use your normal early gameplan of snapping her in and what not to kill her early. If you want to kill her more consistently without snapbacks you’re going to have to learn how to actually fight D.Phoenix.

In order to do that you’re going to want to bring about D.Phoenix. Dont try to turtle out regular Phoenix ever on a health lead unless there’s only like 20 seconds left. Otherwise just bring her out by hitting her until she turns into D.Phoenix. If the opponent has another character left they’ll probably switch her in for someone else to build meter for her then bring her out after that character has sacrificed themselves and died. Once D.Phoenix is out by herself and is ready to fight you still hold off on turning your X Factor. Don’t turn it on until she activates it. Most D.Phoenixes will wait a bit to hope you turn on your X Factor early so they can start to burn yours out a bit then turn theirs on so they can outlast yours. Don’t give them that. Wait until they turn their X Factor on since they eventually will or they will lose red health and be able to be chipped out.

Once they turn X Factor on, turn yours on AND RUN AWAY. D.Phoenixes fireballs can’t reliably hit you as long as you super jump away from her. Basically just super jump away while blocking in the air and just constantly move about in the air while staying away from her. This will make it so D.Phoenix has no other way of hitting you other than air throwing you. She can’t really do much else because you are in X Factor so she can’t chip you, her teleports while they home on you always bring her to the ground except for the H teleport which places her above you. Which means that if you’re running away and super jumping the only thing she might be able to do is H teleport above your head while you’re super jumping and possibly air throw. Even then it may be hard for them to air throw you because you have to generally be in front of or under someone to air throw them. Being able to not take chip damage from the only offensive super she has is a big plus also.

Basically once you burn out the X Factor she’s going to be losing health and will have to rely on healing factor to build back her health. Healing Factor helps her a bit but your best bet if she activates it is to again run away from her until it deactivates so she never gains any health then chip her out. The good thing about her not being in XF also is that her fireballs go back to having the same super slow start up that you can easily punish with an anti air super, screen covering super or air super easily. Even just going to super jump up to her and punish her out of one isn’t a bad idea. You basically wanna just get aggressive and shut out any attempts she may try to get a fireball on screen to control space and then just land that one small combo you need to win. If you have a character on your team that’s good at chipping from a distance that helps a lot as well to just chip her from a range as she’s losing health. Other than that you can just try to stall her a bit more until she’s out of red health then just chip her out or land one hit or throw her and its over.

The old strategy was to turtle out regular Phoenix and hope the Phoenix player was too bad to hit you for 50 seconds cuz people were dead scared of D.Phoenix not knowing anything about the matchup. I’ve realized now the new best strategy is just to rush and kill Phoenix as soon as she decides to come out and fight then use your X Factor to run away from XF3 D.Phoenix instead. Anybody can fight regular Phoenix so there’s no need to turtle her. No one can fight XF3 D.Phoenix. The whole point of XF3 D.Phoenix is to be unstoppable to anything but running away…so definitely run away with your XF protecting you.

Great advice DevilJin, thanks! I’ll admit my bnbs are not consistent and I seldom take the risk of doing them because I’m afraid I’ll drop them (sure enough, any time I tried it last night I dropped it) and you’re right that I was missing the air combo. I think the worst air combo mistake I made was vs. Phoenix, I went MMHQCF+L too fast and the H never came out, which caused the combo to drop.

I did do the DHC trick a couple times in casuals but I’m still working to nail down the timings of a) calling Ammy assist b) doing ankle slash in time to OTG and c) Ammy’s followup. I can do it pretty consistently in the lab, but it’s still not 100% and I need more practice vs. live opponents to put it into practice.

Also, your DP strategies include some things I’d honestly never considered - very good advice. Thanks very much!

I play X-23/Ammy/Dorm, and the DHC reset with X-23 and Ammy can be VERY tricky, you need to practice midscreen setups and corner setups for every character, as after the final hit of Prime, the direction in which you use the slow super can change depending on all these variables. I?m making a video on it for all the X-23/Ammy players, but I really suggest you take each character individually into training mode, test the DHC and the direction you need to use it for and either document it/remember it. It?s really key especially in a match situation to get Slow of Okami Shuffle.

Yay X-23 forums.

Also, Tatsu we should play again next week. I have a few OS’ and Mixups I wanna show you, see what you think about it.

Speaking of the DHC glitch with Amaterasu, in the corner, I’m failing miserably at the repeated sword loop, always miss the juggle for some reason? Could someone tell me the timing please?

EDIT: Oh wait, you’re making a vid about it haha, nevermind, I’ll wait until then.

I actually posted a thread over in the Ammy forum about DHC followup, someone there said he starts with st.M st.H before going into the Thunder Edge L spam, and I started doing that and it made it a lot easier to time it. It’s a bit less damage but if you do the full combo properly it wouldn’t matter anyway (unless you’re coming off a low damage combo or counter from X-23, I guess). The thing I have to be careful about is doing the Thunder Edges too fast, gotta wait for the “flash” at the end or the jingle sound before Ammy’s ready to do another.

I can’t wait to see your video ETR, I saw one of your recent matches on FADC and it was great. Excellent use of air throws!

Also sweet, you have a blog. Definitely checking that out

Thanks MoFro!

Should have some vids recorded on Tuesday if nothing goes wrong again lol. I want to basically get my X-23 out there for criticism.

On an unrelated note, I think I might just try a Devil May Cry team and go for X-23/Dante/Trish. Basically because I like Dante in general, and also, I think he’s absolutely retarded and he provides a DHC trick as well. I was using Trish before anyway so might as well go full DMC lol.

Going out to buy stuff, but I’ll be watching that vid later for sure.

Yeah that sounds like a bad ass team. All 3 characters are really strong and if you put Trish in the back she’s a chip monster in X Factor. Even if they turn their X Factor on she gets a good speed increase and her box jump (jump air dash forward) M is really tricky to block and can cross people up easily. I dont think she can really land any damage off of throws unfortunately but your attack mix up game will still be really strong and the dive kick pressure will obviously get better also. X23 first, Dante second is great for obvious reasons. Dante has limitless potential pretty much as a character any ways and is only really lacking slow normals. Which really doesn’t matter because his normals dont have vulnerable hit boxes any way.

Dante has normals?

That is exactly my planned team order haha, X-23 first, Dante second and Trish last. People say Trish doesn’t make for a good anchor, I think she’s alright in that position. She’s really versatile for all the reasons you said, hypers are boss imo, can rush, can zone, can trap. She’s just really good. Yeah, unfortunately, she can’t get damage off throws without an assist probably so just have to set-up for mix-up options or be lazy and Round Harvest for Chip lol.

I’m liking the fact that the characters I like are powerful haha. Best of both worlds. And yeah, Dante’s normals have massive range, it’s quite dumb really. His advance combos are just ridiculous, bordering on cheap lol. They don’t end, they build loads of meter and you’re gonna do 400-600K meterless anyway, with 1 bar, people are reaching 800-900K without assists. AFAIK, only characters like Dr.Doom can surpass that. Lends to the DHC glitch as well like you said, it’s like he was made to be busted. Just have to learn Dante properly and get his combos fully down, they’ve got weird spacing issues. Had Hsien Ko in my team at one point, but basically, I think she needs to be in another team, though she DHC tricks with X-23 as well.

I see what you did there.

Thanks for the kind words! That was a horrible match, I dropped 3 DHC’s, combos off air throws… It was a long day at work, a long drive, and a bad evening for me. I’ll try and give you something better to look at in the future, haha.

Justin.tv - Xanadu Games: SSF4 Live! - Xanbats 35 minutes 30 seconds in starts myself vs. Tyler. 1 hour 35 minutes in is the second match myself vs. Steverine (Steve H).

Funny match because he also puts Dr.Doom in the back with beam assist so I was kinda mind fucked when we had to mirror it out lol. Second match I basically got too scared of Wolverine not having enough experience vs. him and accidentally using DHC super start up against 2 characters at once blew up my chances to win. I’m going to go in the lab and start learning all the characters so there’s nothing to be mind fucked about come tourney time again. Surprisingly what I thought I might fuck up (the mirage feint hold cancels) i kept up pretty nicely except like a couple times. I only messed up on dumb shit like not cancelling early enough after the OTG shot one time and trying to hit 2 people with a cinematic super. All stuff I can brush up on and easily rectify next time.

If you’re wondering what happened early in the second fight apparently they had told us to not start the match yet but I didn’t hear and we started it up any way. Then Steve heard something and paused the game. Then unpaused the game waited for like a split second and just started rushing in like nuts with Wolverine. Wolverine at 99 seconds FIGHT is stupid as fuck of course and there was no real call to say the match was started. He just unpaused the game like 3 seconds later and went crazy with Wolvie LOL. We agreed to restart and play a more serious match after that.

Man, seeing those H strings in match play is so gdlk. I’ve really gotta work on that. I’m just now getting used to putting feint cancels in. Are you holding S the entire time or just after the first cancel?

I loved the reaction of the commentator… “OH!.. What?” lol

DJ making X-23 look sick. :3

What I do is a bit different. I basically just hit s.H, then do qcb+L+S and make sure S is pressed first then L gets pushed down right after. I basically just press and hold both buttons down but since the S must be held down for sure I try to make sure the S goes down first and just hold both buttons. I just keep putting that input in whether they are blocking or got hit and of course if they get hit after a cancel I hit confirm 2 more into combo. So basically the main combo I use is s.H, qcb+L+S (hold both buttons), s.H, qcb+L+S (hold both buttons), s.H, H mirage feint, s.M, S (launches), j.M, j.M, j.H, j.qcf+L to Wesker OTG assist to Weapon X prime. If they’re in the corner I usually do a charged neck slicer (qcf+L) to build a bit more meter first. Which that of course easily sets up the DHC reset.

On Sentinel because he’s so damn big you can do s.H, qcf+L+S times six, press S to launch and still get the same combo at the end. Like Sakeido was mentioning the feint loop is also a great way to do big damage quickly to a bad assist call. Like you just get in their face and start block stringing and if they called a bad assist you will be block stringing the opponent with plus 12 feint hold cancel while their bad assist call is getting hit by it. I used that tactic towards the end of the match vs. Tyler when he tried to call Doom just as I got in his face with the cancel. They have to push block you out and if you catch on quickly enough you can launch the assist up and land more damage or if you wanna stay safer just keep hurting the assist till they push block you away.

LOL at laming it out at the end…that was awesome, dude was sitting there waiting for you, and you were like “nope i ve got XF and the health lead son YJDK”

lolpwn
