s.MK VS c.MP… Well each has pros and cons. s.MK has less tendency to get countered out and has slightly better range. c.MP has less tendency to trade, works better as a meaty, and is safer on whiff, not to mention it’s easier to cancel into hands. It also seems to hit those moves with upper body invincibility. If I can do MK hands (and I’m buying a fightin stick this week!), I would use that a lot more than I use c.MP. Usually I don’t notice it, but I sometimes feel that 2 frame faster start-up could decide the match.
well i actually agree on everything that you said… also about those 2 framesfeeling like they actually make the difference
and still, i’m not used to c.MP xx hands a lot right now, i find it more difficult to execute but i think its just a matter of practice
anyway by seeing hitbox data and comparing, in terms of priority cMP should rape sMK, i just think I personally should use it more than i do right now when poking
I dont think his use of meter was good. Sure it looked fancy, but he could have used ex gekiro on jumpins, ex hands into sweep into untechable knockdowns for damage/positioning, and super would have probably done more damage in either stance if he landed it (which is super easy)
Running away is a solid Gen tactic, focus absorb backdash cancel is a good way to keep your distance for poking/interruption without taking damage.

Finnaly gotta a video to show ya from a friend of mine.
This guy plays Gen on a Dual Shock 3. He’s very good execution-wise (there’s nothing on stick he can’t pull of on a pad), and his Gen is pretty serious.
He’s not that much into theorycrafting, like I am, so I feed him the usual frame data and whatnot. Still, he knows how to play it lame. As in: if he downloads your style, and finds out one thing that will beat you over and over again, he won’t be afraid to do it.
Even if it involves just using 1 normal. Or crossing you up 6 times in a row.
He’s ruthless.
Everyone who plays against him (and loses), tends to consider Gen to “not be low tier at all”.
He’s low, maybe mid… but still, they’re just salty =D
Pay attention to him. He rarely lurks this forums, and he doesn’t watch many matches. He goes solely by experience or “labwork”.
I’m able to beat him with top tiers only. But that’s me. I’m cheap.
Note: Don’t be an ass and point out his mistakes. Those were grand finals. He was nervous. But he didn’t play on autopilot. He was careful and making good reads.
my comments : - at 0.37 he can set a good combo there like ( Mk Hands + Fadc/first hit , Mp Hp gekiro HK ) or just a cr.HK
- in the overhead setup at 0.34 : never run away in this situation so you have to stay in guard or for pressure:
following the overhead with cr.LP + Mk hands
- when you cross-up the best option select its not Cr.lk (Crane) Mantis cr.HK this is a chance for eat the life opponent try to do Crane Mk mantis Mp Mk hands or just Hp gekiro hk (work with ryu)
- at 0.39 ryu player he let him win i think
anyway for a Gen player hes good that all i say
Seriously?
1- I didn’t ask for advice. He’s a friend of mine, not me. He’s not reading this. Also, most mistakes he made were from pure distraction, not lack of knowledge. He was nervous. Grand finals.
2- You commented a 5 second period in a 14minute video. If that isn’t hilarious, I don’t know what is.
3- On to the flaws you just pointed out in your incomprehensible english:
At 37s he could have punished, he didn’t, because he didn’t expect a sweep. He just backdashed and gained distance. Every single player misses punishes on sweeps every now and then. Pointing that out was just… retarded. It’s like saying you should Ultra on reaction to ken’s jab shoryuken. Sure, go right ahead. If you’re expecting a sweep, it’s easy to punish. In that situation (under pressure), it’s not.
At 0:34 he was expecting a mashed shoryuken, or baiting an agressive jump forward. That’s why he backdashed. Definitely not an EX hadouken. It wasn’t a bad read, just a random outcome.
When he does a crossup into Mantis cr.lk, he’s usually positive it’ll hit, and he doesn’t attempt it with low health.
At 0:39, nothing happened. No fucking clue what you’re talking about.
And there was never a situation where he let him win.
He made mistakes, but none of those you actually pointed out in that garbled encrypted message you call a post.
Boring match, ryu just let him get away with HELLA bullshit. Meatly crane cr.lk? lollllllll. backdash backdash backdash. If i were ryu i would’ve OS ULTRA’d that ass.
LoL WTF is your problem. “Seriously”
And honestly, you post a video of a Gen jumping-in ALL the time, messing up ALL his hit confirms and links, doing unsafe stuff on a regular basis, total absence of ground game, unwanted EX hands, no proper punishing…
… then NightWalker (who, btw, posted recently his own videos showing a 10 times higher level of gameplay with Gen) writes his thoughts about the matches or a part of them, without being insulting at all and even saying that he thinks he’s a “good” player… and you tell him that he wrote retarded stuff and making fun of his grammar problems (he’s from france)… now thats really polite and not “being an ass” at all… definitely
That Ryu didnt make him win, he was a lot more solid than his opponent but he just had no clue about the matchup… he didnt block some easy ogas, he anti aired him like 5% of the times (and your friend jumped-in like 200 times in 15 minutes), never punished his non-hit-confirmed crane cLK being in a 8 positive frames advantage, never punished his blocked rolls which is really easy and free damage for ryu, never punished all those unsafe ogas
And I have nothing at all against your friend, its you who made up all this talking about his skill and posting his video, and then insulting people for expressing their own legitimate opinion.
sorry the theorical i think he would enter to see my advice to him
when you saw him tell him this : your friend NightWalker greet you and tell you dont run away from your oppenent
tnx for the video and reply
Wonky playstyle or not, mad props for winning the tournament!
Hello, this is my first post.
My name is Afonso, I’m from Portugal, 20 years old. I’m the Gen player from the video The_Theorical posted.
First of all, I’d like to get some facts straight. In order to do that, I’ll quote my friend, since all he said was true.
Have in mind I’m a very lazy person. To the point I won’t even bother and try to learn how to play the game the way it was meant to be played, on a stick. I can also barely read frame data, and rely on The_Theorical to teach me that stuff.
That being said, my overall knowledge of the game is pretty low. I’ve been playing Gen exclusively since SF4 and never tried to use any other characters. I love the old man. I don’t care how much he changed in the super version. I know pretty much everything there is to know about him and, when not extremely nervous, can pull off all of his combos with a decent consistency.
For those of you criticizing my playstyle, I don’t care. Honestly, it’s not how I usually play. Our fighting games community is a small one so I’m used to play my opponents casually, including the Ryu from that video. I knew what had to be done to win and I did it, not caring if it seems cheap or not. Gen already has enough things to worry about, let alone trying not to play lame.
Execution wise, I know my job was far from perfect, I usually don’t fail that much. Still, I’m also not used to playing in grand finals. I accept the comments on my c.lk, which I’ve been trying to solve by doing a s.lp after the j.mk to hitconfirm the lk. It’s something I’ll defenitly stop doing.
Now that you know a little about me, I’d like to explain the meaning of this post. It’s simple. if you’re a decent player, from Europe, and would like to play some casuals with me online, send me a PM with your PSNID and I’ll add you. In order to learn more matchups, I’d like to play with people from other countries since our Portuguese community is a small one.
Honestly, I’ve tried this in the past and added a PSN player from the Gen foruns who claimed was a decent player (I’m not sayin’ who for obvious reasons). He lost, badly, in the first match, and told me he didn’t want to play me anymore because he didn’t like do get owned like that. That’s sad since I believe it was just a bad match for him and he still had many stuff that I could’ve learned from him. The point of this is, I’m a pretty laid back guy, but if you’re gonna be douchie, I’ll just remove you from my friend list.
Sorry for the long post and the ridiculous amount of gramatical errors it may contain. I’m not gonna bother and read all the stuff I wrote to check for errors. (Remember, I’m lazy.) English is very different from my mother language. Long story short, PM me your ID, I’ll add you for some 1 vs 1 endless matches.
You should’ve just insulted them like I do. It’s faster.
But that’ll work.
Out of all the character forums I’ve lurked or trolled, the Gen video thread is by far the most critical of any. Which is funny because I haven’t actually seen much of anyone play him all that well. Maybe it’s not a bad thing though. Just saying you have to take anything anyone says with a grain of salt. That being said, if I was fighting that Ryu I would have abused Shakudan on him too. He didn’t DP you much at all, and let you have your aerial way with him. You had no reason to do otherwise. Unfortunately, the people who watched the video obviously don’t know how to watch match videos, because they didn’t see the big picture and what was going on. So when they say things like “you aren’t very good” (the nice version lol…) you just have to understand that they are big fools. <.< Props on winning a tournament with Gen.
PS - Being an asshole doesn’t help. You might have the illusion it does, but people just largely dismiss your posts when you’re a dick. Just a tip.
its partly why this forum is pretty dead. everyone talks to each other like they already know everything. if you ask a question, theres a good chance that the answer will come off as tho youre stupid for asking
Best of a bad bunch from Ranked PSN this evening … good for a giggle at least

I honestly think this forum is dead mainly because unlike vanilla theres noone who took gen to the next level, entering national tournaments and this kind of stuff… the kind of context where you are forced to play solid and indirectly giving the community interesting inputs to start a conversation
no jibbo, no yeb, no ariez, no asiantom or anyone new showing high level of playing… a video from some japanese dude playing a nice gen comes out like twice a month if we’re lucky, redwolf’s vids are rare
and thats noone’s fault
@ newtype andy… as you also showed in the past (like on capcom’s forum about SSF4 Gen, where btw you SURE saw “the big picture” of what was happening to this character, lol), you just cant help finding such sweet and creative ways of insulting people… acting all superior for the whole post and then at the very end calling other people “fool” “asshole” “dick”… definitely too cool for me… a freakin’ life coach v(^o^)v
and last, i had NOTHING against Afonso’s vids and i didnt even want to write anything after i’ve seen the video, its just that such unprovoked arrongance (from The_Theorical against NightWalker, post #1127) simply and easily got on my fucking nerves
and btw, in his post, Afonso showed himself being a cool and nice dude
just the opposite of his highly-tecnical frame data coach friend :X
that stuff too, but douchery dosent help things
anyway, enough derailment, more vids. there are things to be learned even if the material isnt of the highest quality
Basically, this. There are great japanese Gens but I don’t know how they’re doing in tournaments, and there are so few players in the US or Europe who are playing Gen on that level.
Just wanted to jump in and say that I (and I’m sure, a lot of other people) appreciate everyone who contributes to this thread, since Gen videos are so hard to come by. Other than Redwolf, it’s basically the 0ShinAkuma0 channel that’s your only hope, where you can find the odd Profecery or Rokotsu video, or Hoigek when he posts something.
Good to hear about a Gen winning a tournament - even if it’s a small tournament, that’s no easy feat.
I’ve seen videos of Afonso before, and he’s got a very mobile and random style that I admire. I find it alot more impressive than pulling of max damage combos and punishment.
