Agreed. One thing I have noticed is that, at the right distance, Gen can really shut down rush down characters. Timing is critical, but before you know it Bison, Guy, or Makoto are stunned purely because [M] c.HP, c.MP > hands, s.MP, and s.MK > hands (even [C] c.HP and c.MP) prevented them from using their dashes, slides, scissor kicks, etc. Also, tha Messiah is right about lk Gekiro. At a safe distance, it can punish long reaching moves, like Bison’s s.MK and HK, as well as build a bit of meter.
Man do you guys really have crane cr.hk trade that often? I rarely have it trade. Most of the time the trading is due to my own fault since I would do it too late. Otherwise it cleanly beats the vast majority of air attacks in game. It was the same way in vanilla. There were very few air attacks that consistently beat or traded with it (specifically Sakura’s j.hk, Blanka’s j.hk and a few others). It’s been super consistent for me.
I’m still picking up the c.HK I mean I used it in Vanilla. but never had to as much as I do now.
Also another thing I notice a lot of gen’s don’t use very often is Focus Attacks. Focus Attacks play a big part vs characters like Guy and Rog. Guy’s Elbow drop boom Focus Attack. But once again, it’s all in the playing style I guess.
I usually incorporate focus attackis as an extension of my defense. Like if someone jumps in blatantly without meter to reversal I’ll do focus attack. I also use it alot to bait pokes and backdash just for general mindgames.
cr.rh shouldnt trade ever. peoples timing is just off a little. i look at the opponents waist when im anti airing. feels like my timing is better if i focus on hitting center mass

And Catscratch, quit hating. If you play one character no matter who it is the same way every time whether its rushdown, mixup, whatever, people will figure it out and you will get beat. I don’t think you have played gen very much. His normal punches and kicks are badass! His punching game was stepped up in super, alot of his punches can shut down characters. Ex-Oga from vanilla was not that great of a move. Sure it gets you out of a situation for free but then what? Did you just go straight to mk-hands combo for the win every time? I call bullshit. Yea a couple players have dropped Gen, but I haven’t heard anything from them since then about how incredibly awesome they are doing with their new character. We will see what EVO tells us or some other tournaments, but until then, we are trying to get better with Gen here, not philosophize about what kind of character Gen is and cry about how you can’t figure out how to play him so he must suck. Honestly, I do play a few other characters once in a while, but I honestly feel myself going back to Gen because he is so much more deadly and has more options than other characters. I am not that good of a player either, but I do take down some good players with Gen more often than not. Yes, there are a few things that could be fixed, and Seth Killian seems to read these boards so lets get some things going about changes we would like to see with Gen. Honestly, Gen is not crap tier. When I look at all the characters in super, Gen can definitely hold his ground.
Tiers are significantly less important in Super (and they weren’t all that in vanilla either) because the game is REALLY balanced as far as fighting games go. I too find myself coming back to Gen every time I’m playing just for a few matches but still, he’s too complex for me to not be attracted to him. I think with proper research and some optimism we can make him work. You just have to apply more footsies/tactics with him to get your wins and read up on matchup info (Ken has been added today btw to that thread) etc.
Gen is exactly as the iplaywinner SSFIV guide describes him: unorthodox.
I think that’s a perfect description. It explains why it’s so hard to pick up a new character after practicing so hard with Gen. Which is something I kinda like about him. I agree about the optimism thing as well. If Inthul’s run with Fei proves anything, definitely don’t count the lower tiers out.
Unorthodox. That’s exactly how I feel when I play Gen. Though my newbish jumpy and guess-right-until-win playstyle doesn’t go well with Gen’s fragile nature, I’m always attracted to Gen and am amazed at how he can be an almost completely different character depending on the player’s style (though that can be argued with all characters).

I think Gen is still able to be used in tournament level play… I’m not going to give up on him. I think this thread needs to stop hero worshipping players who have moved on. Nothing personal Im also down 2 contribute to the matchup thread since movement on it has been slow lately.
